Just… tell me when the wedding is. Who: Deryn + AJ When: Late August (before the camping trip Deryn goes on with Sam) Where: Deryn’s place What: Chatting Rating/Warning: Low / None Status: complete
Deryn was baking. Of course she was baking. It was her favorite hobby -- something that left her hands busy and sure, and her mind -- well. As scatterbrained as usual, but at least a little more focused. She and Sam were going on a camping trip soon, and she thought it might be nice to have some stuff to eat for breakfast.
So muffins it was, of course. Oatmeal.
And then there were two pies in the oven as well -- one for Percy, simply because Deryn liked him, and one for Sam’s brother, simply because he liked pie.
She had a bit of flour on her nose, and no one was surprised. “So?” She asked her friend, who was seated at the counter and in charge of mixing up some kind of batter. “You wanna ask about Sam so we can get past this conversation right away?” Even now, she was grinning.
AJ had come over to help Deryn bake. She was pretty handy herself in the kitchen. May have been one of the reasons that the two women got on so well together. AJ knew that baking was a big part of her business in the Dream World, and it made sense.
“Just… tell me when the wedding is.” AJ said, giving her friend a cheeky grin as she stirred.
Deryn stuck her tongue out before turning around to check the status on the things in the oven. “Someday.” she said, giggly and dreamy all at the same time. But not because she was imagining a wedding, just because that’s how she always was.
AJ grinned. She saw something there between Sam and Deryn. At least, she thought she did. She thought she saw forever between them. Not like, distance, but time. She thought that Sam and Deryn were going to be together forever. But maybe she was just romantic like that. “Good. I hope I’ll be invited.”
Deryn didn’t mind the romanticism of it. She kind of was too. She just didn’t mind one way or the other if forever had a ring tossed into the mix or not. It was just how she was, happy with how things were, or with how things could be. Either way. “You might be. I guess we’ll see.” She smiled teasingly, her tongue sticking out through her front teeth cutely.
AJ gave a laugh. “All right, this dough is mixed. What’s next?” She asked, sliding the bowl across the counter to Deryn. She loved baking with her friend. They were able to experiment with things and come up with delicious recipes. She started to clean up, putting dirty dishes into the dishwasher and wiping down counters.
“Pies are almost done. Then we can stick those into the oven and come up with something new!” Deryn really should have been selling her bakery somewhere, she always had so much of it around. Maybe she could set up a little booth for herself at the farmer’s market?
She should. Her baked goods were delicious, and rivaled anything any “professional” bakery spat out. Except maybe Baxter Bakery. That place was magically delicious.
“Somethin’ new, huh?” AJ said, moving to wash her hands. And a few dishes while she was at it. Keep cleaning as you go, she always said. “Like what?”
Cleaning as she went was something that Deryn was pretty bad at. Oh, it all got done, but sometimes it was all piles of dishes and flour and a face full of mess. She didn’t seem to mind.
“I dunno. Maybe some kind of dinner muffins. You know you can make em with soup and mushrooms and stuff?”
“Ooh, like cheesy ones? Or ones with garlic and herbs in them?” AJ said, breaking into a grin. “That sounds like a fun experiment.”
“Both!” Because everyone knew that cheese went with just about everything, and garlic and herbs could only make things better. Obviously. “But exactly like that. I printed out a recipe.” The little blonde looked around at her counter tops, eyes searching. “Somewhere…”
“Ooh, that’s the way to do it.” AJ said, then turned to look. And she couldn’t find the recipe. She started to look along the counters, moving things and helping Deryn look.
Eventually, they found that recipe. It’d been on the fridge all along, stuck onto it with a silly little magnet of a ridiculously cartoony butterfly. Deryn didn’t even look sheepish when she slapped the paper down onto the counter with a proclamation of “Ah-ha!”
AJ had laughed when she saw it stuck to the fridge, as they’d been looking for ten minutes to find it. (She’d even gone into the fridge for a drink in that time.) “Amazing. Right under our noses.”
“That’s life!” Deryn only laughed, and shrugged, nudging her hair over a shoulder with a flippant sort of gesture. “So, here’s what we’ll need…”
