Who: Lilo and Will. (Gramkai? Willo?)
What: Puppy playdate.
When: Monday, 9/1.
Where: Will's house.
Rating: PG.
Status: Complete!

Will had today off, and he’d been planning to stay at home and recharge. But when he’d woken, he’d been woken by Winston. The golden retriever mix seemed uncomfortable and mopey, sticking close to Will and whining. So, the bright idea had come. He’d reached for the phone and dialed Lilo’s number.

Doing one-armed pushups, Lilo grabbed the phone with her free hand when she heard it vibrating. She was focused on her task when she said hello, and as such, it came out breathy and quiet. “‘llo?”

That was ... interesting. Will blushed faintly as he replied. “Hello, Lilo. It’s Will.”

Lilo almost fell over as she moved to her knees. “Oh, Will! Hi!” She grinned, running her fingers through her hair. “I was just finishing up working out, what’s up?”

“I was wondering if you might like to come over. And bring Daisy.” Will couldn’t help but sound amused. “I think Winston is moping.”

That made Lilo laugh. “Aww, does he miss her the way I miss you? That’s so cute!” She stood up, moving to her closet to go look at her clothes to see what she could wear. “I’d love to come over.” She’d probably been moping a little herself.

“Oh, good.” Will smiled. “I like it when you come over.” Honesty was usually the best policy. “And I mean, Winston does too. But he hasn’t stopped looking out the window. That’s his moping behavior - he’s got food, he doesn’t look or act sick.”

“Well, it’s good he’s not sick. And I like coming over too.” She smiled, wiggling out of her workout clothes and into jeans and a tank top. She still dressed like she was on the island, and doubted she’d ever stop.

“See you soon, then?” Will turned to Winston. “Did you hear that? Your lady love will be here soon.”

“Be there soon. See you, Winston!” She laughed when she hung up the phone, bouncing off to get Daisy into the car. It was almost like the mastiff knew what was going on, because her tail didn’t stop wagging the whole drive over.

Soon enough she was knocking on Will’s door, laughing at Daisy almost vibrating out of her fur.

Will had been trying to get Winston to go eat or something, but when the knocker sounded, he abandoned that effort. Opening the door, he smiled, beckoning the ladies inside. “Hello. Hello, Daisy.”

Daisy was all bouncing and happy whimpers. Lilo ignored it in favor of greeting Will, waiting for Daisy to calm down. “Should we let them say hello in the yard?” She didn’t want them to knock things over.

“I think that’s best. Winston!” Will barely had to call him before he darted out into the yard. He wrapped an arm around Lilo, kissing her cheek. “How are you?”

Lilo wrapped her arms around Will once she’d unleashed Daisy from her harness. Daisy immediately did the low chuffing noise that was doggy laughter as she ran toward Winston. “Better now.”

“You flatter me.” He kissed her lightly. “I think the dogs are happy, too, though.” He liked it when they were all contented. “It’s so nice to see you, though.”

“Just honest,” she smiled. The chuffing noises made her giggle, so did the fact that the dogs’ whole bodies seemed to be wagging. “I like this. How’s work been?” She was supportive of his new job, even though it meant she saw him far less.

“Immensely rewarding.” Will seemed to light up, and he knew it. “Since there are so few murders here, they’ve allowed us to consult on some of the LA cases around the north of the county. It’s a bit difficult, though.” He didn’t let her go. “I’m also a little worried about my partner.”

“Oh? Kirsty, right?” She knew that the woman and Will were friends. Lilo wasn’t exactly threatened, if only because Will didn’t see her that way, and Kirsty was allegedly married to a neanderthal. Whatever that meant. “What’s wrong?”

“Right, Kirsty.” Will did appreciate Lilo’s logical outlook. “She dreams too, and hers have gotten ... very odd. The good news is that she can teleport.”

Lilo’s eyes went wide. “That is so much more awesome than me dreaming about getting an alien dog.”

“The teleporting, yes. The bad news is? She’s changed.” Will tried to find the words; it sounded ludicrous even to his own ears. “She’s ... white. With pins in her face. She says she’s a priestess of hell.”

Her jaw dropped. “I - oh. That’s ... that’s a thing.” Lilo had to sit down.

Will immediately felt a flush of shame. He knelt in front of her. “I’m ... sorry, I’m so sorry. Are you all right?”

“That must be so tough for her.” Lilo blinked, shaking her head. “Can you give her my number? Maybe a girl day would help.”

He hadn’t thought of that, and yet again, was grateful for her in his life. “Of course.” Will kissed her cheek. “I don’t think she’ll object that I told you ... I mean, she knows I tell you everything.” Did that sound too odd? He hoped not. He liked having someone he could be almost completely honest with.

“I’m your girlfriend, I think she probably expects that.” She stroked Will’s cheeks, looking into his blue eyes, examining him for a moment. “You’re okay though, right?”

“Mostly.” Will wasn’t about to lie. “I mean. I wonder about her. I wonder if she’s all right. I can’t imagine what it must be like.” He didn’t even believe in hell, until Kirsty told him about it.

“Me either. I guess that answers most of the eternal questions, huh.” About if there was a God, or where people went after they died. moving to wrap her arms around Will, Lilo smiled shyly. “I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorrier for her.” At least he had her, and his dogs. Will kissed her cheek again. It was oddly comforting for himself, never mind her. “What about you? Are you doing well?” He’d remembered to ask, instead of just thinking about himself. It was a victory, given how distracted he’d been.

She smiled, running her fingers through his hair. “I’m really good. Been training hard, just because I don’t know when Mavericks is. I mean, it’s anywhere between November 1st and the end of March next year. Whenever the waves are best at Half Moon Bay. I was doing pushups when you called.” She felt like she should have to explain why she sounded all breathless.

“That’s that competition, right?” He tried to recall. Lilo had mentioned it, and he knew that people did appreciate it when you remembered the small things. “Where is Half Moon Bay? It sounds very dramatic and exotic.”

She nodded. “They only invite twenty-four people a year, so it’s kind of a huge honor.” She tucked her long hair behind her ears. “San Francisco. They put us up at the Ritz-Carlton. It really is dramatic and exotic - it seems like a movie.”

Will smiled. “Fancy. Winston, stop that.” He was getting a little bit too frisky with Daisy.

Lilo stood up and made a psst noise with her mouth, smiling when both dogs stopped and turned to look at her. “It is fancy. You could come.”

“Depending on time frame and how much notice I have.” Will didn’t know anything about surfing, but it might be nice to see her. It sounded like it would be powerful.

“One day’s, and it’s only a day long competition. We’ll see.” She turned his head a little, hand on her cheek, kissing him lightly. “I like sleeping over.”

“Over here?” She’d only done it once, but it had been surprisingly restful. “Maybe this time the dogs won’t be speaking English.”

“Wherever you want.” She let her forehead rest against his for a moment, eyes closed. “How’re your dreams?” She knew they weren’t great, but she figured they were worse than hers. That warranted inquiry. She worried about him.

“Difficult.” Will didn’t particularly enjoy talking about them. “I encountered my therapist in them? That is, he appeared in my dreams as an FBI therapist. He wrote the evaluation that let me back into the field.”

“That’s ... good, right? That you got back into the field?” She stroked his cheek, smiling a little. “At least you don’t dream about having a blue talking dog.” Hers just felt silly, but she still woke up with tears on her face. It made her miss her sister.

“I think it’s good, but I’m not sure.” Will shook his head, still with an arm around her. “I’m not sure, in my dreams, that I’m really suited to go into the field.”

“Oh?” She looked up at him, unaware that even just thinking about her dreams made her eyes look sad.

He could tell, and frowned. “What’s wrong? Are your dreams very bad? Or are you worried about mine?”

“Mine aren’t bad, they just make me miss my sister. They’re about me when I was little.” She wiped at her cheeks with the back of a hand, unaware that she wasn’t crying. It felt like she should.

Will nodded. He felt a little out of his league, but he knew enough to hug her and make her remember that she wasn’t alone. “Are there some good moments?”

“Oh, a lot! I just feel lonesome when I wake up. I have an alien dog?” She giggled, knowing she seemed silly for saying it.

“An alien dog?” Will echoed, not entirely understanding. He looked over at his own dog, now playing with Daisy in the tall grass.

“Yeah. He’s blue and has antennae. I’m guessing he’s an alien. My sister thinks it’s an evil koala.” Lilo shrugged and smiled. “I wouldn’t think they’re the same dreams that everyone talks about if my parents weren’t dead in them too.”

“They aren’t as vivid as everyone else’s?” Will was curious. “Mine are so vivid I imagine I’m seeing it in front of me.” Sometimes, to his mental detriment.
“Oh, they are. But they’re silly. There’s no violence, there’s no ... I don’t know, everyone seems to have death or terrible gore or something. My parents die in a car wreck, but I don’t see it and I’m not there.” She chewed her lower lip.

“I see.” Will tipped her chin up to look at him. He kissed her gently, not entirely sure what else to say, if anything. He couldn’t exactly tell her she ought to experience more gore in her dreams. He could only be here for her, as she was for him.

She smiled before he kissed her, letting her head rest against his shoulder when their lips parted. “You’d like Nani. She’s ... I don’t know, we’re all stubborn in my family, but she’s a bit more motherly than me. I’m a little more of a free spirit.”

“Nani’s your sister?” Will liked her closeness; she didn’t push it. “I don’t know, though. Free spirits move other people along toward a greater destiny.” People like himself, who tended to be resistant to and frightened of change. “Don’t knock yourself.”

Lilo nodded, closing her eyes. “I’m not knocking myself, I just know you’d like her. She’d approve of you too, for what it’s worth. She teaches school on the big island. She’s fourteen years older than me - I was kind of a whoopsie.”

“Do you still stay in touch at all?” He would have loved to have a sibling. Even an older sibling - he might not have been so lonely then.

“I call her once a week.” She smiled, looking down at her hands. “She didn’t get why I left Hawaii, not right away, because she’d already gone to college and had a family when my parents were murdered. I still lived with them.”

“For what it’s worth, I understand.” Will said softly. He smiled a little at her.

Lilo smiled back at him, squeezing his hand. “You know, someday I should teach you how to surf. Take the dogs to the beach.” She laughed when Daisy lifted her head. “Sorry. B-E-A-C-H.”

Will chuckled. “Uh oh. I don’t think Winston knows that word, though. Is it her favorite place?” He didn’t comment on learning to surf; that seemed a bit outside his comfort zone, but he didn’t mind the beach itself.

“She loves it. She runs around the surf and tries to catch the waves in her mouth. It’s pretty much the cutest thing ever.” Lilo smiled and shook her head. “She got on the board once, but it was for a tiny wave. It mostly bored her, I think.”

“That’s sweet.” Will tried to imagine the big dog on a surfboard, and couldn’t entirely. “We’ll have to see if Winston can turn into a water dog. If not, we may have an issue.”
“Oh, he’s probably got some retriever in there, right?” Lilo laughed, tucking her long black hair behind her ears. “He’s more of a water dog than his girlfriend.”

“Well, yes, but he isn’t very fond of baths at all.” Will teased.

“Oh, most dogs aren’t.” Lilo grinned. “Do you have a hose?” She stood up, stretching and moving to pet Winston. “Daisy’ll teach him.”

“Yes.” Will wasn’t sure what she was planning, but he got up and headed for the side of the house. There was a long garden hose coiled against the siding, and he unhooked the first part of it. “What do you need it for?”

She turned it on, laughing as Daisy ran toward her with a big doggy grin. The dog immediately started jumping through the spray, chuffing loudly, alternating its romps with coming to its mother and dancing around her.

Will raised an eyebrow, laughing. “She loves it.” He turned to look at his dog, who seemed more hesitant. “Winston,” he said, getting his attention. “Come.” The quickest path to Will would take him through the spray.

Using her thumb to make the spray finer, Lilo chuckled as Daisy nosed Winston toward Will. She hoped that Winston would find out that he liked it instead of spending the time hating it.

Will reiterated, “Come,” as he watched Winston, keeping his voice calm. Eventually Winston would either come or run off. And even as he watched, the dog ran through the spray to Will, shaking off the water before sitting down. “Good boy,” Will praised, scratching his ears. “That wasn’t so difficult.”

Daisy ran through a few more times, trying to get Winston to join her. Lilo chuckled when she watched them, reaching out to squeeze Will’s hand. “They’re adorable.”

“He’s learning.” Will watched his dog, amused at the effect the mastiff had. “I think they’re meant for each other. This may mean we’re stuck together.” He hoped she understood his joke - he liked her, but he didn’t want to act like them being together was some sort of fate. It was their choice.

She chuckled at him, letting her head rest on his shoulder again. “Oh, damn. I’ve got to stay with you. Not the hot smart guy.” She held up a hand to her forehead, pretending to swoon. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I like you.”

“I did notice. It must be fairly obvious if I noticed.” Will managed another joke, wrapping an arm around her. He felt safe with her, and that was a big step in the right direction.
