Open mic nights were something that Rapunzel thoroughly enjoyed. Though to be honest, she enjoyed a lot of things, but there was something about performing in front of a real audience that just gave her a good feeling inside. Sure, it wasn’t a concert, but everyone had to start somewhere, right? Besides, she still didn’t have much of a head for financial things, most of her money coming from her parents.
Anyway, she went up and started to play. No matter what, she always put her heart into her music and singing. She wanted to share her feelings and emotions with the audience, give them a little piece of herself. That was what music was for her, a way to communicate with others. She played her two songs (acoustically, for obvious reasons), and left the stage with a curtsying kind of bow, before hopping off the platform and looking around for her new friend Iggy. After all, he’d said he’d come.
Iggy wasn't exactly an expert on music. He only knew what sounded good to him and what type of music he liked. That didn't stop him from giving his opinions on Rapunzel's songs. He told her what he thought of them and thought that it was leading to making a new friend. They seemed to get along well. That was the only real important thing.
Out of nowhere he found himself bored at home. He reached over to his phone. "Text Rapunzel," he said into the phone. It was how he learned about her open mic night. He jumped up and walked into the living room. He was able to call a driver to take him to the show.
He showed up a couple minutes late. He quietly made it through the place to an empty table. Nala sat down next to his chair. He smiled as he recognized her voice.
She weaved through the tables and people milling about, until she found a table with a young man maybe about her age sitting mostly by himself. Considering pretty much everyone else there looked like they were all chatting and knew each other and he looked like he was waiting, she figured he must be her friend. She beamed happily and made her way over to the table.
“Iggy,” she called out a little questioningly. “You made it!” She practically danced over to his chair. “Have you been here long, did you hear me, how are you, it’s nice to meet you!” All of her sentences and questions ran together to form one big one, and she was pretty much dancing in place throughout most of it until she impulsively reached out and hugged him at the end.
A smile grew on his face as he listened to her music. It was a beautiful song. It hadn't been the new one that she had sent to him and he had talked to her about. It was still nice.
He asked for a glass of water. Thinking about if he was going to get anything he would wait until after she got off stage. So that he could buy her something too. He clapped when the song was over and wondered if he should move towards the stage. He decided to stay where he was and wait for Rapunzel to get there.
"Hey," he said as he heard her close by. He didn't get a chance to answer any of her questions before she suddenly jumped at him. He didn't expect it and jumped in shock. Nala barked as she hugged him.
His jump and the bark caused her to jump a little. She stepped back with a sheepish giggle. “Sorry! I tend to get a little carried away sometimes,” she explained, laughing slightly. It could be a problem, her enthusiastic affection, for anyone not fully acquainted with her. It’s what came from being raised in a slightly sheltered environment with very few peers around: sometimes she wasn’t sure how to conduct herself in public.
Now she was unsure of what to do. So she smiled down at the dog who would obviously be concerned for her master. “Hey there, puppy,” she greeted (because all dogs were ‘puppy’ no matter the size), reaching a hand out for the dog to smell. Animals she was a little better at. “I’m sorry I spooked you, I didn’t mean to. Promise I won’t hug-attack your master again without permission!”
She straightened up again, turning her attention back to Iggy, still a little sheepish. “Sorry again,” she said with a smile. “Thank you for coming, though!”
It wasn't that Iggy minded her suddenly hugging him. It was the fact that he didn't even know how close she was until she hugged him. Someone coming up and touching him without warning always caused him to jump. Usually he would at least hearing them approaching. He kind of did this time too but she sounded like she was still walking towards him. She must have been moving fast.
"It's not that. It's what she's trained to do," he said reaching down and patting Nala on the head. "Usually she'll warn me before someone hug attacks me." Rapunzel moved a little fast for the dog to give a proper warning.
"You were great," he said facing the sound of her voice. "I wasn't sure how it would sound in person but it was fantastic."
It finally clicked for her: he was blind. That made sense, that he hadn’t been able to see her coming and the dog and everything. Her only reaction though was her lips making a small ‘oh’ shape, and then she was back on target. Besides, she should probably learn to be a little less all up in people’s faces with the hugs and stuff.
“Well, I’ll help her out then,” she declared. “I shall let you know when you’re about to get a hug attack!” That could be fun in and of itself! Shouting out ‘hug attack!’ before giving someone a massive hug.
She beamed at the compliment. “Aw, thanks! I’m glad you liked it! That makes me really happy to hear!” She did a happy little bounce dance in place, bringing her hands up to her chin. “Alright, hug attack,” she warned before throwing her arms around him again and giving him an enthusiastic hug.
With her enthusiastic welcome Iggy wasn't surprised that she didn't realize that he was blind. It usually took people a good look to put it all together. There was usually always this small sound as it clicked. Like an 'oh' or they made another small sound. She had rushed over so fast that there was no way she could have put the pieces together.
"That should make it easier on her," he laughed realizing that probably wasn't the only time she'd hug attack him.
He wondered why she was surprised. He had already told her that he liked her music. "It was a great song choice," he smiled. Nala raised her head but didn't bark this time. This time he hugged her back.
"Do you play here often?" he asked pulling away from the hug.
She wasn’t always the most observant of people at the best of times, and it was made a little worse by her near constant state of excitement. It was one of the many contributors to her complete lack knowledge or awareness of personal space.
If one knew Rapunzel, one must always expect a hug attack, or cuddles, or just plain old over the top enthusiasm.
“It’s one of my newest ones,” she told him. Of course, she was always happy to hear when someone enjoyed her songs, even if they’d told her previously. Not that she really tried to fish or anything, it was more like a kid constantly wondering if a grown up had seen what they did because they were just so proud of their work.
She bounced back from the hug, because she did almost everything with a bounce. “I think this is my...” she trailed off thoughtfully, scrunching up her nose a little as she did so. “Third time playing here,” she announced with a snap of her fingers as she reached that conclusion. “I’d meant to bring CDs this time, but I forgot,” she went on with an almost sheepish giggle.
That would be something that Iggy would have to get used to. He was used to his siblings rough housing and his friends did it some times. He was definitely used to strangers not being as hands on as she was. He didn’t mind it really. It was refreshing to get a ‘hug attack’ out of nowhere. Although now she knew to give a verbal warning, mostly for the sake of Nala. He didn’t want her to bark every time Rapunzel suddenly let her enthusiasm get the best of her.
“It was a good choice,” he said still liking it.
He hadn’t been there before. He would have to change that if she came there. He wanted to hear her play again. “When was the last time?” he asked.
Oh. She wasn’t going to get anywhere if she didn’t do that. “Maybe set up a text reminder?” he suggested. “Because I would have definitely bought one.”
