Hermione was trying to get used to this side of campus. It was a very weird switch in majors, but thankfully she’d done it early enough in her education that it didn’t really matter. So far all she’d taken was general education classes, though some of them would have met requirements for her former major, too. She had taken some classes through the community college while she was still in high school, so she was getting into the heart of her new major pretty quickly.
She stopped by Professor Moriarty’s office and knocked on the door. His posted office hours were just starting, and she hoped she wouldn’t be interrupting anything.
Jim was enjoying the change of scenery. San Diego was wearing on him, and while UCLA was something of a commute, it wasn’t that awful. And his students so far were showing some degree of promise, which was always very nice.
He’d just finished doing some personal paperwork when there was a knock on the door, and he raised his eyebrows. That was quick.
“Come in,” he said, setting his papers aside.
Hermione pulled the door open and stepped inside. “Professor?” She asked. The way it came out of her mouth--sounding so very… British... was very reminiscent of her Dreams. The accent was back, fuller and stronger than it’d been over the last few years. Mostly because of the Dreams. “Hello. I’m Hermione Granger, one of your new students. I just wanted to introduce myself.”
Well, how quaint and polite. He thought about insisting that she call him Doctor Moriarty, but decided that might come off a bit awful.
“Ah, well, how thoughtful of you.” Jim stood and held out his hand. “A pleasure to meet you, Miss Granger.”
Hermione should have called him Doctor Moriarty, and would absolutely apologize for it the next time she saw him. For now, though, she was blissfully unaware of her faux-pas. “The pleasure’s all mine.” She said, reaching forward to shake his hand. “I’m very much looking forward to your class this semester.”
“I’m glad to hear it. Most don’t appreciate the nuances of advanced mathematics. Unfortunately.” Jim gave her a brief smile. “Am I to expect wonderful things from you, then?”
“Absolutely.” Hermione said, in response, giving a nod and a somewhat proud smile. “I’m new in my major, having only just switched at the end of last semester. But I’ve done quite a bit of research over the summer, and am excited to be studying what I really want to study.” All of her General Education requirements were finished now.
"Is that so? And what is it that you're so keen on? If you don't mind my asking." Jim held up his hands and shrugged. "I simply like to know these things about my students.
“Well, my Major is Space Physics.” Hermione said. It’s a real thing, yo. She was shocked to find it out when she started doing her research. “My husband, Jim Kirk, was instrumental in the building of a space craft, and led a team on a mission to the moon. It was independently funded, I don’t know if you heard about it, but it was in all the papers. He won all kinds of awards upon their return. Anyway, I want to go with them when they make their trip to Mars.” She said, her eyes lighting up. “And I want to be useful. Not just along for the ride.”
Ah, to be young and full of dreams and ambitions again. Sure, Jim thought it was all very noble, but he knew from experience that most bright-eyed students ended up completely detached from what they once thought they wanted out of life. Still, he put on a bright smile.
“I’m impressed. I think that means I’ll be seeing a lot of you beyond this semester.”
“Hopefully.” Hermione said, though her smile meant absolutely. “Anyway, I just wanted to say hello. I’m very much looking forward to your class this semester. I’m sure you’ve got things to do, so I’ll be on my way.” She nodded once, then backed toward his office door. “Thank you for your time.”
“Thank you for yours,” he replied, sincerely enough. Jim even gave her a slight wave and a smile as she headed out.
