Neena was still laughing at her failed attempt to troll the Summerses when she met Nate for ice cream. She was pretty sure she could keep a small amount of ice cream down, and she hoped not to be proven wrong. She wore yoga pants and a tank top, and carried a small purse. The purse was still awkward. If she could get away with wearing the belt with the pouches that went with her uniform she would, but she knew that would just look weird.
Beside, it might not expand enough for her tummy. She wasn’t showing hugely, mostly she’d just gained weight from being idle.
Nate smiled at her, and nodded. She looked good! “Hey, Neena. How are you? Enjoying yourself?” Some tone of his might indicate he already had a clue what had been going on. And he was amused. Even if he would be spending his weekend up on Greymalkin and over at the Mallory house mostly. He had let a note on the fridge at least?
Neena laughed. “I tried, anyway. Your parents are kind of freaky.” She ruffled his hair and went to order ice cream. “How’ve you been?”
He followed along, snickering. “You only realized that now?” He chuckled as he smiled and considered the board. “Pretty good. Really, most of this place's stupidity is washing off. Now I just have to deal with people I wish would leave forever and relatives who wish I was ten.”
Neena nodded. “So I don’t know about the first one, but I figured Scott would grow up by now.” She sounded sympathetic, that was a shitty position to be in.
“No worries. I’ll survive both.” He smiled at her. “How is THomas? And how’s the little cutie in your belly? And life?” He bounced as he ordered.
“Of course you will.” Neena said with a laugh. “Thomas is good, and as far as I know the baby’s okay. I’m not doing great, but there’s not much I can do about it.”
“Why not? What’s wrong?” Nate peered at her, curious and concerned.
She paid for their ice creams and took her seat. “I’m just having a lot more trouble than I did with Chris. I was fine for about a month and a half and then suddenly I could barely keep food down and I feel faint pretty frequently. I felt tired before, but not to the point where I’d call out of work to stay in bed.”
“Have you seen a doctor? ANd what did he say? Or she say? ANd if not, why not?” He peered at her.
“I did. Jesus I don’t hate doctors that much. There’s not much we can do right now, if it sticks around into my second trimester it’ll be something to worry about but right now I’ve been advised to take it easy.” Which she was, and it was pissing her off.
“Good.” He hmmed. “Do you want to do some virtual exercise? Won't cause you to get worked up physically, but it will tire you out like working and fighting mentally just as well.”
“I don’t need to be more tired.” Neena groused. “I need to be more energetic. Poor Dante’s missing our runs. I take him for short walks but it’s not the same. He’s a high energy breed, even if he is old as dirt.”
Nate nodded. “Sorry.” He smiled at her. “I wish I knew how to help.” He’d look into it. Somehow.
She shrugged. “There’s not much to do about anything. I’m going to ask Alex to come by and run with Dante. Probably bribe him somehow. Unless you’d like to do it.”
"Alex would be a better choice with his dog. But anything else you need, let me know."
“Sure. How’re things with Cora? Or do you still not want to talk about it.” She smiled innocently.
“We’re doing really well. We are… we’ve found a different kind of relationship, based in snuggles, talking, and hanging out. It’s odd, but not a bad thing at all.” He nodded, a warm grin on his face.
Neena laughed, but not at the strangeness of their relationship. “You’re a sneaky bastard, I figured you’d find something to do with her. I’m glad you’re happy.”
“We’re content to just be us and not worry about things like sex or definitions.” He nodded. “We love each other. Nothing else matters.”
“I’m glad that you found someone.” She meant it, too. Even if sometimes she couldn’t stop wondering if she should have waited for him to grow older. Her life had a lot of what ifs. She was sure this one would stop plaguing her sooner or later.
“Thanks.” He nodded to her. “And I’m glad you did too.” He smiled at her and hoped her life was good. He wanted her to be happy.
“Yeah. Thomas gets on my nerves now and then, but I’m really grateful to have him in my life. Oh, shit, I didn’t tell you what fucking Kitty and Laura wanted to do in my bar.” She laughed at the memory. It was definitely a good thing that Thomas was around to keep some of her crazier impulses (and friends), in check.
Nate raised an eyebrow, then chuckled. “With a lead up like that, I can only imagine it involved blood or other bodily fluids.” He wasn’t sure which disturbed him more, or if either did.
“Yeah. Laura wanted to pull out her fucking claws in my back room so she could put new ones in. You know me, I was just going to let them do it, but Thomas reminded me that Faiza was quicker and painless. So thanks to him my backroom wasn’t subject to amateur torture porn.”
“Ugh, yes. Or you know. I could have done it.” Nate chuckled. “Faiza was a better choice, all told.” He smiled a little. “You two bounce off of each other well.”
“We do. He keeps me from being excessively crazy and I drive him insane.” She snorted and shook her head. “You and Cora have your shit together better than we do.”
Nate snickered. “We have to. We have to be careful and in control, and not slip, and we need to talk and understand a lot more than even normal couples. So… we work at it a lot. and in weird ways. Not better, but, we work things out our way.” With extensive use of telepathy.
She shrugged. “I’m glad you found someone to make you happy.”
Nate nodded. “And you, too.” He smiled, then. “How is the bar doing? I haven’t managed to get back since the oil war.”
“I’m out pretty often, but it’s picking back up, thank God. You starting school soon?”
“Yep. A few days now, and then I’ll be running around from work to school and back to annoy everyone inbetween.” He chuckled.
“You’re gonna be way more annoying even if you do spend less time around us.” Neena said with a laugh.
Nate grinned and nodded. “Ayup. And you’ll love every minute of it.”
“Maybe.” She said with a laugh. “You’ll just have to bribe me with ice cream to keep me happy.”
“I can do that.” He smiled, and found he was happy. Things were going well, so far. No matter what, things were going well.
She smiled and nudged him playfully with her elbow. “When I stop sucking you want to play with waterguns?”
Nate chuckled. “Sure! Maybe even zat guns. I managed to make a static electricity gun based on something dream me did. Completely undangerous, but enough to make you notice.”
“Because what we need is to run around staticking each other.” She said with a laugh.
“Why not? Sounds like fun to me! It’s a nonlethal annoyance weapon.” He grinned and poked her. “Now, ice cream time.”
Neena laughed and poked him back. “Fine, fine.” She ate very slowly, unlike normal. Anything to try to keep it down.
A little bit in, he grinned at her. “I’m thinking of bringing Graymalkin down and making it an island, but keeping it secret this time. Or maybe bringing in some landfill, and making it a resort?” He grinned wider.
Neena snorted. “It’ll need a interior decorator if you want it to be a resort. Maybe you could park it next to Cerebra?”
“Well, I saw a few of those on the net. But we’ll see what I do. I think I will land it off the beach, outside of Newport, and cloak it there. There is a spot where no boats go and no surfing is done, and it might suffice.” He nodded.
“So close to Lorna and Alex, then.” Neena said with a nod. “Man, I really need to text Alex.”
“Yeah. Seems like a nice neutral place to be.” He chuckled, then poked her. “So do so. I should poke Lorna, too”
“I didn’t know they were into that kind of thing.” Neena noted with a smirk.
Nate snerked. “Was there something kinky they weren’t into? But no, not that sort of poking.” He stuck out his tongue at her.
“You know, it’s nice to know that there’s someone for everyone.” She shook her head and laughed. “I don’t have the patience for that kind of stuff.”
“Hmm? What do you mean?” He was curious now.
“You really want me to explain how I don’t have patience for kinky sex.” Neena asked incredulously.
Nate laughed. “No, I was confused. Nevermind.” He snickered and poked her. “You are a groovy, if strange, woman.”
“Obviously.” She noted dryly, poking him back. “Eat your damn ice cream.”
“Yes, ma’am!” And he spooned some into his mouth, grinning. It’s nice to hang out with you.
You too. Stop being a fucking shut in and ask me out sometime. I’m dying of boredom. She still ate slowly, but her amusement with Nate was taking more of her attention than her worries about puking.
Gonna take Thomas out for burgers and beers soon, and then we can go hang out and shoot pool somewhere, another day, you and me. He nommed the ice cream, thoroughly enjoying it.
Should I have one of my agents follow you with a camera for posterity? She smirked widely between bites, and her mental tone was teasing with just a tiny hint of turned on.
Nate snerked and made a face at her. Silly. We are not that close, he and I, and no. He was not turned off by it, but truly, there was no appeal in it for him.
Neena made a face right back at him. I didn’t think it was likely, I just thought it was hot.
Nate laughed and went back to his ice cream. Everything would be alright. It probably would be. Now eat your ice cream.
