It was dark in the cell. At first it was disoriented. There was so much silence. Was it truly alone? This wasn’t the island. It couldn’t hear the thoughts of the nurse as she waited to serve her purpose, it didn’t hear the hum of distant machinery. So quiet.
It had problems balancing when it stood. No tail. The knees went the wrong way. Mewtwo frowned. “What’s going on? Where am I?” It was a little angry, but it was more confused than anything else.
“Oh good, you’re awake.” A woman’s voice from the darkness. She sounded cheerful. “I was hoping we could talk.”
“Who are you?” Mewtwo took a step backward, and fell because the knees still went the wrong way and for some reason it couldn’t float. “What have you done to my abilities? Is this some kind of human trick?” Distrust and anger colored its words, but the voice was so strange it was having a hard time not being distracted. “What have you done to me?”
“And what are you playing at, Monica?” The voice sounded quizzical. “What abilities did you give yourself?”
“I gave myself NOTHING.” Mewtwo replied, willing the source of the voice to be in pain. It was no use, without the psychic abilities all that anger had no real vent. “I can barely stand, you’ve done something to my body, to my mind.”
“See, I didn’t do anything. The people you hurt? That’s another story. Did you forget? Torturing all those people? Killing those people? You murdered hundreds.” It didn’t matter if Monica hadn’t been directly responsible for the Japan Air Crash. She was close enough, and Shepard had had enough of Cerberus.
“I hurt people? Humans never stop hurting people or pokemon! I was created to participate in your sick battles, to take over the world for Giovanni, and you dare lecture me about hurting people?” Mewtwo struggled to its feet.
“Poke..what?” The voice moved closer, but always stayed in the darkness. A light came on, and Monica was facing a reinforced glass window. “Woman, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Mewtwo stared in horror. Not at Shepard, but at her reflection. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME!” She shrieked at the top of her lungs, lunging for the glass.
Shepard pulled her gun, but the glass should stop anything the woman might do. “What did you dream about…?”
Mewtwo wasn’t used to being vulnerable. When she hit her head she was dazed for a moment. “I will not tell you about my dreams.” She replied, staring Shepard down. “If you mean to destroy me then do so. I’d rather die than be human.”
“Who are you?”
Mewtwo turned his back to Shepard. “Why do you care?”
“Because I like to shine the light in the darkness and see what stares back,” she replied.
“If you’re the light in the darkness then humans are as terrible as I thought.” Mewtwo noted. “I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Oh, there are good humans and bad ones, and I’ve worked with and killed both. But there are worse things out there. Cruel things. I don’t make people suffer. So what are you?”
Mewtwo sat down, her back still toward Shepard. “This is not cruel?”
“It could be worse. You’re dangerous person, Monica. You’ve killed, and you’ve maimed.” Tyra wondered what the hell they’d done to her. She’d have to have...words..with Frost and Summers.
“I am not Monica.” Mewtwo gritted out between her teeth. “If I have killed and maimed, it was only because those who created me saw me as a weapon and not a creature.”
“I can’t entirely disagree. Cerberus uses it’s people as weapons and little else. But everything I’ve seen of your work…” Tyra shook her head. “Pretending you were used, isn’t going to work with me.”
“I don’t know what that is.” Mewtwo grumbled, but she knew it was no good. The human didn’t seem to have much idea what was going on either, or it was trying to break her. Either way she was best ignored for now.
“What’s your name?”
Mewtwo huffed and crossed her arms over her chest. If this person didn’t know who she was, and she wasn’t a pokemon, then she had no idea why she was being held. None of this made any sense. She didn’t like what she didn’t understand.
“Why don’t we try this.” screen popped out of the opposite wall, showing footage of Monica’s “work” on humans, with Monica observing. “This doesn’t ring a bell?”
Not only did it not ring a bell, Mewtwo backed away from it, shaking her head. “What interest would I have in humans? It’s pokemon that need to be strong if we ever want to be free to rule our own destinies.”
“I still don’t know what a poky mon is,” Shepard said, with some exasperation. “And you’re a human, just like me. Not like them though.” She’d found footage of the mutants and their powers. “You were trying to take their abilities and put them in regular people.”
Mewtwo turned to face Shepard. “I told you that I did not, and that I don’t care about humans. I am not one of you, and I will find a way to undo whatever was done to me to make me look like a human. I have more in common with these mutants than with humans.” Mutants. It was another word for freak. Mewtwo wondered if they had been created as well. Maybe there were others! Maybe they were all pokemon in human bodies.
“Frost did a number on you,” Shepard murmured. She stepped into the light, and into the room. “I’ve made my share of hard choices. Watched a lot of good people die to save a lot more good people. But I think I would have stopped her if I’d been present.”
“You know who did this to me?” She asked, facing Shepard. “You know what they did?”
“You had information, and they took it. I think they broke you in the process. Turned you into..whatever it was you dreamed of.” Shepard moved around, the overhead light making the scar pattern on her face more visible than usual.
Mewtwo remembered the dream of the sea. “No, I am not what I dream of.” Her voice was soft, her expression thoughtful. She was angry at Mew, but more than that she was jealous.
Shepard wasn’t sure what to do with this person. She couldn’t be let loose, not with that anger in her. She doubted she could be fixed. She couldn’t be kept here, in this makeshift place, either. She paced.
Mewtwo turned her back to Shepard again. “If you’re not going to let me out then you should just leave.”
“No. Not yet. I’ll figure out what to do with you yet. You can’t stay here. I have my own place.” It was more secure.
“I will not let you use me for whatever scheme you’re planning.” Mewtwo noted, but there wasn’t any real malice in it. She was just too tired and confused.
“No… I just plan on making sure you can’t hurt anyone.” Shepard stepped closer, pulling out some handcuffs.
Mewtwo heard the handcuffs and turned to face Shepard. She tried to stand up but she just wasn’t used to moving in this body. It just resulted in her falling forward after trying to unbend her knees the wrong direction.
She caught the woman with one hand and pulled the other two hands behind her back to secure them. She tried to be gentle, but that was fairly difficult to do.
Mewtwo didn’t struggle much once Shepard touched her. She couldn’t take Shepard down in this pathetic body. She just had to hope that her attacks came back. She was going to Shadow Ball this woman into oblivion and seek out Frost, whoever that was.
Sighing, Shepard pulled a bag over Mewtwo’s head, and dragged her outside into the hot sun. It would be a bit of a drive, but Anderson’s people could take a lot better care of this woman than she could.
