Emma was in a much better mood when Monday rolled around. She’d gotten a massage, her desk was more or less clear, her assistant was no longer living with her ex-boyfriend, and she’d enjoyed the fruits of a very adult sexual relationship with her husband almost all weekend. All in all, her life was pretty good.
She knocked softly on Winston’s door and waited to be let in. Belle smiled brightly at her. “Good mornin’ Missus Summers. Can I get you a tea or somethin’?”
Emma smiled at Belle, which was the first time ever for that, and shook her head. “No, I’m just here to discuss the coming week.”
Belle nodded and ducked out. That went. . . well. She wondered what had happened to Emma and who the pod person was.
Emma couldn’t restrain a snicker as she took her seat across from Winston. “Good morning, Father.”
“Morning, Emma.” Winston finished up what he was typing and came around the desk, hugging her, before going back to his seat. “How are you? Did you enjoy your weekend?” His eyes were warm, and he settled back to watch her.
She returned his hug and settled down in the chair. “It was a much needed break from paperwork.” She noted with a laugh. “Scott and I spent some quality time together, and I got to talk to Nate, which was also quite nice. How was yours?”
“Very good, actually. I spent most of it in Boston, and spending quality time with your mother, and then managed to crush a competitor who was involved in human trafficking in an entirely too obvious way.” His voice was matter of fact, but his grin was feral.
“So a normal weekend, then.” Emma asked with a laugh. “How is treatment for your condition going. Have they made any progress?”
“Fairly much, yes.” He smiled, then sighed, and sat back. “Not really. They have eliminated many prospects, and begun a fifteenth round of testing. In other words, they haven’t got a clue.”
Emma sighed. “I may have an alternative doctor who could help you. Her methods are frankly frightening, but she’s a good woman and quite trustworthy.”
Winston blinked, then leaned forward, curious. “I am willing to entertain the idea. Who is she, and what does she do?” He was wary of getting hopes up, but he would see her, if his daughter recommended her.
“Faiza Hussain. I’ll have her contact you directly. She uses. . . well, her mutant powers to heal people. It’s quite disturbing to look at, but I assure you that it does no harm to the patient. She determined our child’s gender with this method.” The fact that Emma would trust her baby’s life to Faiza said enough about her confidence in the woman.
“Hm. Okay?” He nodded. “Then send her on. I will be glad to talk to her.” He was willing to trust Emma’s opinion in pretty much everything.
He sat back, wondering what would happen this time.
Emma allowed herself the luxury of a moment of consideration as well. “It must be difficult to be away from Mom so much. I enjoy having you here, but I know you’d rather be with her.”
Winston breathed out, then smiled a little. “It was rather harder to come back this time than most. I love having time with you, and being able to do things with you. But sometimes being far from her makes me wish I could hand the company over to you now.” Utter honesty, without prevarication. Take that!
Emma nodded. “I’m still not certain I can handle it. Even less so now, to be frank. I think Nate is a better choice. He has all the good qualities that I possess, and he has the time and energy for this place. Not to mention he won’t be out on maternity leave for six months at the start of the year.”
Winston nodded. “Maybe. Maybe both of you would be a better choice. For now, though, I am here.”
“I don’t want to keep you if you’re unhappy. If you need a replacement in order to return home then of course I’ll step up and take over.”
"I like being here with you, and enjoying the chance to get to know you and my grandson and son in law. I am thinking of returning to staying in Boston full time and coming out here once a month."
“I’m enjoying your being here also.” She smiled softly at him.
“Good! Now! Tomorrow we should have breakfast, then you can take the day off to have more of that fun couple-y time with your husband that is so nice. I’ll be flying back to Boston after breakfast, so that only makes sense.” Winston smirked at her.
“What, we come in on Labor Day and get the day after off?” Emma asked with a laugh. “Tell mom I said hello.”
“I know. Silly huh? I will.” He nodded. “Now go.on. You’ve got more important things to do than stay around my office.”
“I’m not standing.” Emma noted with a laugh. “But I suppose I can get to work, if you really want me to.”
Winston poked her lightly. “I love you, daughter. Now go on.”
“I love you too,” Emma said, between laughs. She hated still being ticklish. “I’ll be back for lunch.” She stood up and smiled at him before she left.
