You’re pretty awesome, you know that?
Who: Billy Batson and Verity
When: Sept 1
Where: Target
What: Random Encounter
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete
Verity was in the toys section of the Target. She’d been told by several sources that people liked to see toys on a woman’s baby registry. She had no idea what kind of toys that babies would use, or where to find them, so she was wandering through the toys section with the scanner gun in her hand, not really sure what she was doing.
Billy, who was there to buy a few toys for his fellow Batsons, smiled as he saw her. “Hi, miss... Verity?” He nodded to her. “You’re on Valarnet,. right?” he offered her his hand. “Me too. Billy Batson.”
“Hmm? Oh. Yes, I am.” She broke into a smile and reached to shake his. “You must have a really good memory for faces,” she added, the smile turning into a smirk. “Nice to meet you, Billy.”
“I do, yes, ma’am. And yours is a pretty nice face to remember.” He nodded to her. “How are you doing today?” He waved a hand around. “enjoying the wildness of shopping?”
“Trying to figure out things for my registry,” Verity said, holding up the scanner gun almost sheepishly. “Apparently, my mother’s friends have purchased everything on there already, so I have to add more.”
Billy grinned. “What sort of items do you want? Things for the baby? Things for you?” Billy was more than happy to help.
“I guess? Any and all? My mom is throwing me a shower, so I’ve got to fill out the registry. I think they’d like to buy stuff for her, though, and less for me.” Verity replied.
“Okay, well, what about a baby swing? And wallpaper for the nursery? Some booties? Ooh, and all the diapers and wet wipes ever?” Billy nodded.
“Wallpaper? Do they have that here?” Verity asked. She knew that the baby was going to be a girl, and she had a bunch of stuff already set for the nursery, so she could definitely buy some wallpaper. Or wall decals. Or something. “Curtains?” She added, turning to move with him out of the toys section of the store.
“Yes. Thataway.” He grinned as he followed her, and smirked a little. She seemed nice. And bouncy. “Oh, yes, like crazy curtains, near the back wall.” He walked with her, chuckling.
“You know a lot about this place. You work here?” Verity asked as they walked together. “You’re not wearing the red shirt and khaki combination that the rest of the employees wear.”
“Nope. I shop here a lot. I live alone, and I have eight siblings.” He grinned at her, as he walked. “They have lots of good stuff, cheap presents, and good food.”
“Well, there you go.” Verity said, moving with him through the store. “My mother says this is just easier for the shower, since it’s going to be up near San Francisco. They’ve got plenty of Targets up there, and I can register down here… and I can take things back down here, too.” She wanted everything to run easily and smoothly.
Billy nodded. “Shouldn't be a problem, really.” He knew about the registries from years of buying gifts. Ahead, loomed the wallpaper sections, with things in popular and obscure designs.
“There we are!”
“Oooh.” Verity looked around. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to paint the nursery, or put up wallpaper… but then she saw some amazing wall decals with fairies on them. “I like these!” She said, then stepped forward and scanned the thingy.
Billy grinned. “Will that be your theme? Because I know they have some fairy drapery in housewares…” He nodded.
“Oooh, show me the fairy drapery.” She responded, nodding. “I don’t know. I was thinking flowers… fairies… mostly purples and greens with pink thrown in.”
“This way, I think… no, this way.” And he led her over an aisle, where they found not only fairy drapery, but more accents in the colors she was looking for. Billy grinned as he wandered with her, thinking she reminded him of his mom a little, and his little sister some too.
Verity may have gone a little trigger happy with the scan gun. She was excited about a lot of different things. Pretty soon the whole nursery had been scanned, from a rug, to blankets, to drapes, wall decals, even a light switch cover. It was really coming together in Verity’s mind. She broke into a grin, finally, and sat down in a chair in the furniture department. All of that walking, shopping and scanning was making her non-existent ankles hurt.
Billy collected her some water from the cafe, and came back to sit next to her, handing over hers as he sipped his own “How‘re you doing here?” He Had been amazed at her energy and enthusiasm, and he felt tired just watching.
She was drained. It was like a piece of flash paper. It went up in a flourish, then died out just as quickly as it’d started. She gave him a tired smile and a ‘thank you’ to the water, and then sipped it, too. “I’m done. Stick a fork in me.” She said, grinning.
“Nah. Just some water and food. There’s a cafe at the front and we can get a cart to get you there.” Billy nodded then waved for a worker.
Verity gave a little shake of her head. Then she turned to the worker and shook her head again, also waving. “That’s not necessary. I’m all right.” She turned back to Billy. “i’m all right. Thank you, though.” She pulled herself up from the chair. “I can make it to the front of the store. If not further.” She had to go turn in her scanner gun thingy anyway.
“Okay. But let me help, alright?” He had some muscle on him, and he walked with her toward the front. “You really push yourself. You’re stronger than a lot of people I know.’”
“I’ve got to be. I’m doing this all on my own.” Verity moved over to the customer service counter to turn in the scan gun. Her registry would be updated by the time she got home. This technology stuff was awesome. “...Anyway, thank you. For helping me out back there.”
“You’re welcome. I’m glad to help.” He offered her his arm to lead her to the cafe. “Anything else I can do for you?”
Verity shook her head a little. “Nah, I don’t think so. You’re so kind to help me, keep me company.” She said, giving him a smile. They reached the Starbucks counter. “Please, let me get you a coffee or something.”
“Sure. A coffee would be great.” He smiled. “Though you know you don’t have to do that.”
“I know.” Verity gave him a smirk. “I want to. Come on.” She led the way into the Starbucks and up to the counter. There wasn’t a line, thankfully, so they were able to order straight away. Verity ordered a small, iced chai latte. The caffeine would go straight to the baby, she was sure, but she didn’t care. She really needed that chai.
He followed along and let her order, and then sat with her there. It was nice to just talk to someone and he enjoyed it, a lot. “You’re pretty awesome, you know that?”
Verity laughed. “You’re pretty awesome, too.” She gave him a smile.
