Carol’s “office” was in the hanger at one of the smaller airports in the area. She had a desk filled with pinups and news clippings and other avionics memorabilia.
The hanger housed two airplanes; a lovingly cared for Cessna, and a deweaponized F-16.
Padmé didn’t like to admit when she was scared, but she was honestly a little frightened to learn how to fly. Carol seemed really nice though, so hopefully she would be in safe hands. Safe nerdy hands that apparently knew a lot about planes, so that was even better. But, she wasn’t going to wuss out on this, so she made her way to the airport to meet with Carol. Once she arrived at the office she knocked before opening the door a little, “Hello?”
Opening the side door, Carol gave the woman a smile. She was tall, with blonde hair pulled back in a pony tail. She was wearing a somewhat clean looking shirt and green overalls. “Hello. Padme? Come on in.”
Inside the cavernous hanger, the little two engine prop plane sat alongside the sleek fighter jet, a stark contrast with each other.
“Yes, you must be Carol, so lovely to meet you,” Padme gave her a bright smile back as she stepped into the hanger and took in the enormity. It was monsterous and she couldn’t help but be drawn a little closer towards the planes that were inside, “Holy cow, this place is huge!”
“Nice to meet you too.” She nodded her head towards her desk. “I’m going to give you a quick rundown on flight mechanics, then we’ll take the Cessna up so you can get used to the idea of being inside a small plane. If you’ve got time after I plan on taking the fighter jet up. There’s a second seat if you’re feeling brave.” She flashed a grin at Padme. “Same offer I made my last student.”
“And did your last student take it? It sounds quite interesting to go up in a fighter jet. It would be a lot of fun to mention that I’ve done it before. But yeah, let’s go over mechanics,” she turned towards Carol and made her way over to sit down at the desk so she could give Carol her full attention.
“She enjoyed it,” Carol said, though whether or not she was joking was impossible to tell. “You’ve done it before?” She glanced at her as she pulled out some flyers.
“Oh no, I meant that it will be fun to mention that I’ve done it period to people. I haven’t done it before. Do you think I’d look as scared as I do now if I had done it?” Padme couldn’t help but chuckle nervously as she sat down and waited to look at the flyers.
Carol laughed. “I see. We will give you a memory you won’t soon forget.” She spent the next ten minutes giving Padme a crash course in flying and the science behind it. She hoped the woman enjoyed that sort of thing, but she felt that as much as you flew with your gut, you need to understand how it all worked.
“Ready to go up? It’s a lot different than a big liner.”
It all made a lot of sense and Padmé had been on enough flights to understand what was going on. She had to admit that Carol had a lot of knowledge and she was quite impressed with what she was teaching her. Thankfully she would have more classes before she attempted to fly by herself, well she hoped, and then nodded at her with a smile, “Sure. It all makes sense and it’ll be good to see it in action.”
“Beautiful!” Carol slapped her hand on the desk, which creaked as though there was much more force behind that blow than it looked like. She hopped to her feet. “Come along, Padme. This is the best part. Flying always is.”
“Aye Aye, Captain,” she teased. She resisted the urge to salute her as well but instead made the comment and chuckled afterward. As they walked towards the plane she began to feel the butterflies in her stomach. Hopefully flying in a smaller plane wouldn’t be too scary.
Carol laughed, Padme’s use of the word ‘captain’ a lot more amusing than it really should have been. She ducked under the wing of the fighter jet and led Padme to the cessna. “We’ll give her a quick once over before we fly. It’s always important to do that every time.”
“Alright, show me what I should look for before each flight,” it almost reminded her of when her dad would check over his sailboat before going out when they were younger. She knew it was important to inspect things, if not every time then at least once in awhile. Hopefully things would check out nicely and Padme prepared herself to keep a mental checklist as she watched Carol.
She nodded, glad to have an eager student for once, and went slower than she would have otherwise gone. When the inspection was done, she slid the door open and gestured. “Take the seat on the right. The controls are locked unless I say so, but unless you do something deliberately obtuse, there’s no way you’ll crash us.”
“Thank god. Please feel free to keep them locked as long as you want to,” she couldn’t help but chuckle as she climbed into the airline. It was a lot smaller than she expected and when she walked into the cockpit she was surprised by all the instruments. The inspection outside was very interesting, but it was way more interesting in the cockpit. She sat in the seat and waited for Carol to join her to figure out how to buckle up.
She grinned. More than once she’d suddenly given a student control. It was fun, and she knew how to get out of just about anything. And no, well, the plan could lose it’s wings and she could carry it down if she had to.
She sat next to Padme and showed her how to secure herself, then gave her a once over and a twice over of the instrument panel.
Once she was buckled in Padme took a couple deep breaths and then looked over at Carol with a look mixed with excitement and a little terror. Being in the actual cockpit made her a little nervous, but she was excited to give it ago, “Alright, let’s do this before I puke on my shoes.” She knew she wouldn’t actually throw up, but she just wanted to be in the air before she could settle down.
“There’s a baggie to your right.” Carol taxied the plane out of the hanger, and down towards the runway. It bumped and jostled as it picked up speed and then suddenly evened up, lifting into the air smoothly.
“Oh goodie,” Padme deadpanned as she held onto the arm rest as they started to move down the runway. It was a much different sensation than sitting back in the regular part of a major airliner. And then suddenly….just perfect evenness and that fun weightless feeling that she got, “Well…..that wasn’t so bad.”
Carol laughed and waggled the wings of the plane. She increased their altitude quickly. “It’s one of the best parts. Really, just being in the air is the best part. I’d stay up here forever if I could.”
“I do like once we’re in flight. It’s taking off and landing that really suck. Otherwise this is a lot of fun. So, how often do you go up in your planes?” She would probably go flying all the time if she had her own plane.
“A wise man once said, landing is basically a controlled crash. Though I doubt that would help any of your nerves.” She flashed Padme another smile. “ I try to up several times a week. Every day if I can get away with it. Less now, though.”
“Haha, not really, but that’s quite an interesting idea,” it did freak her out just a little, but she smiled back at Carol. Carol seemed to have enough skills to set her mind at ease, “And why do you do less now?”
“I’m not sure how I can explain it without you thinking I’m crazy. I suppose that depends if your dreams are a little different than most people’s, or not?” Carol glanced over at her.
“Well, I can tell you that in my dreams I am the queen of a planet, so they’re pretty crazy,” she answered honestly. Being involved in a space war seemed to not be a common thing. Definitely made her wonder what Carol had dreams about if she wanted to make sure her dreams were just as crazy, “So, feel free to try to explain.”
Carol smirked lightly. “A queen is pretty cool. I’ve met one or two of those. I’m kind of … well I’m a superhero.” There was a flash of light, and then Carol was sitting there in her blue and red and yellow. She didn’t bother with the mask.
“Holy crap! That’s awesome!” Padme couldn’t help but shout in excitement. The light had surprised her, but seeing Carol in a full costume was really cool. It was like seeing Wonder Woman in real life when you never expected her to actually be real, “What kind of powers do you have?”
“Flight, strength, I can shoot energy. Some other stuff related to that. So..I don’t need a plane to fly, but I still love it.” She grinned. “I can reach the edge of the atmosphere. Even space as long as I can hold my breath.”
“Oh my…..that is pretty cool! I can’t even imagine how cool it would be to be able to fly like that. Man, that is so neat! Do you have dreams where you save people too?” She knew nothing about having superhero powers, but sitting next to a superhero was pretty freaking cool in her book.
“Oh yeah. All the cliches. THe costumes I had for a long time were horrible, though. Glorified swimsuits. I like this one a lot better.” Carol made a face.
“Haha, that’s crazy. So did your love of flying come from being able to actually fly or was it something you were interested in before you found out about the super powers?”
“I’ve always loved airplanes. My knowledge is practically encyclopedic,” she replied, grinning. “I was in the Air Force both for reals and in my dreams. I got to fly a space ship there….that’s kind of how I ended up with powers.”
“Oh cool! Well, thank you for your service in the military and I would like to say that I feel extremely safe with you right now. I will have to say that I’ve got the coolest flight instructor out there,” Padme was extremely excited over the fact that Carol was a superhero. Even if she wasn’t an actual superhero she would have to say that Carol was pretty awesome anyway.
“Well, I could carry this plane down by hand if I had to. I’ve done that before.” She winked. “You’re extra safe. And I’m glad you didn’t freak out. Some people do.”
“Sweeeeeeeet. And no worries, I don’t think I would freak out unless you turned into like a massive alien or something. A superhero is neat and you still pretty much look just like you but with a suit on.”
“One of my best friends could shrink to the size of a wasp, or become a giantess,” Carol remarked, thinking of Janet fondly. She winked at Padme. “They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.”
“Woah, that is crazy. I didn’t realize there are so many different powers that people can have,” She commented back before leaning forward a little to look out of the windshield, “Oh wow, this is an amazing view!”
Carol waggled the wings a little bit, then banked so Padme could see a view of the coast and the land leading up to the mountains far in the distance. It was a beautiful view.
“I can’t see why you love to do this,” she commented as she continued to watch the view. She knew they would have to turn around soon, so she was going to enjoy it while they could.
“I’d stay up here forever if I could, but then my girlfriend would find a way to kill me.” Carol touched a picture of herself and a darkhaired woman on the dash. For luck.
“Ha, I could see how she would not enjoy you being away forever. It’s nice that she lets you still come up here and spend a good amount of time away,” She commented with a smile. That was so sweet.
“You always need to have a bit of separation in your relationship, or you’ll start to want to strangle each other,” Carol replied with a laugh.
“Haha, very true! You don’t want a clingy relationship where you’re constantly around each other. Alright, do we have to start heading back now?” She was looking over all the instruments and trying to make sure she could remember what was what, “I want to make sure I’m really paying attention.”
“Sadly, we do. Do you think you can figure out how to get back to the airport? It’s southeast of here.” Promoted to navigator!
“Oh god, I don’t know if I can do that. But I’m willing to give it a try? Please don’t give me full control or anything,” she bit her bottom lip as she leaned over to look at where they were and listened as Carol explained the instruments again before she attempted to move the plane in the right direction.
“Good, just ease up a little on the controls,” Carol replied, gently. “You don’t need to jerk it so much. Treat it like a lover.”
“I’m scared, of course I’m going to be a bit tight gripped,” she murmured as she took a couple breaths and tried to relax. She managed to ease up a little and tried to do her best impression of treating it like a lover. It seemed to go a little better.
Carol smiled at her, watching her work the controls and nodding. “You’re a fast learner. Usually I have to keep my hands on the controls too. Just in case.”
“I’ve always been able to pick up on things quickly. Made it somewhat easier to get through school,” she explained before biting her lip and attempting to keep control of the plane, “You should keep your hands on anyway.”
“I’m very hands on,” Carol said, cheerfully. She put her hands on the console and winced inwardly at the way that sounded.
The comment made Padme giggle even though she knew she should act more mature than that, “Alright, we’re almost there. I hope you’re going to actually land this. Because I think I may freak out if I try it myself.”
“You’re a few lessons before you can try a landing, and a few more before you do your first solo landing.” Carol said reassuringly.
“Ok good,” she commented with a small laugh before she made the last move to get them close to where the runway was, “Okay, we should be good to go. I think we’re facing the right direction to go down there.”
“Great! Hold onto your pants.” And Carol started their descent slightly more rapidly than necessary. Because it was fun.
“Oh god,” she murmured as she pushed back in her seat ever so slightly. This was definitely going to be interesting and she couldn’t believe that she was in the cockpit for a landing. Taking off and flying was much easier to handle than a landing.
“Remember, Padme. This is a controlled crash.” Carol grinned, enjoying this far, far too much.
“You’re so mean,” Padme answered with a laugh because she knew Carol was laughing on the inside. She watched the controls and then suddenly they were landing. She jerked slightly with the landing, but it really wasn’t too bad at all.
“So…” Carol said, once they’d taxied into the hanger. “What do you think?”
“That was crazy, but fun. You’re a good teacher and I would definitely like to sign up for some lessons. It would be really neat to be able to fly on my own. I can see why you love it so much,” Padme answered with a small smile. She was a little scared still to ever fly by herself, but it did seem like it would be fun to learn how to do it.
“I’d be happy to have you as a student. And maybe someday you’ll get to go up in the F-16. Or even sans plane.”
“Oh god. That would all kinds of epic. Alright, let’s fill out the paperwork and that sort of thing. I don’t want to keep you away from your girlfriend by taking up your whole evening,” she commented as they finally came to a completely stop and Padme managed to get herself out of her chair.
“Thanks.” Carol followed her out of the plane. She was happy to have a new student!
