Belle whistled as she made her way into Winston’s office. After the raid on Wednesday and her night with Wolfwood she was in a damn good mood. She smiled at her boss, looking smug and happy, her steps light as she took her seat and opened his calendar book. “Good morning, sir.”
“Hello, Miss Boudreaux. Enjoying your nightlife, I see.” His smile was warm, not too smirkish, and just amused. “I hope you’re feeling up to working this morning. It’s going to be a long day.”
Winston Frost was used to have strong smart women around him. It amused and pleased him to see them smile.
Belle laughed as she found right page in his planner. “Don’t know what you’re talkin’ about, sir.” She looked up to make sure the door was closed, then handed a slim, broad cardboard box over to him. “I need this analyzed when you get a chance.”
“Of course.” He took the box and made it disappear into his desk, nodding. “It’ll be started by lunch. How does security look? We’ll need to see how the new hires and personnel are shaking up since the Husk incidents.” He checked something on his desk screen. “Hmmm. Oh yes. I’ll need you with me when I go to see Hiretsu Mitysuyagi. He’s got more intel on the coming trades in Tokyo and likes to talk business with two instead of one.”
“Of course, sir. When are we leavin’, I’ll clear my schedule.” She pulled her phone out and pulled up her calendar. “I can run down t’ check on security durin’ your ten am meeting, and have a report on their status ready when you get out.”
“3 this afternoon.” He nodded, and tabbed to another page. “Good. Hopefully things will be quiet for awhile instead of the usual craziness. How are young Miss Vanille and Mister Wolfwood?”
His words came out utterly without inflection.
Belle sighed. “Vanille’s still scared of her powers. I ain’t seen much of her. I’ve been meanin’ t’ look in on her, but with the second job and takin’ care of Nicholas some nights I’ve been lettin’ it slide.” She felt pretty crappy about that, now that she was thinking about it.
Winston looked at he schedule, then nodded. “You can leave early this afternoon, at five. That should give you more time.”
“It’s okay, I’ll stay t’ help you fix things up after the meetin’.” She’d have time to talk to Vanille later.
Winston tapped the schedule and closed it. “No, I think no. You need to take care of business, my dear lady. Vanille works here too. And both of you are important to me.” He placed a certain amount of importance around family.
Belle started to argue, then shut her mouth and nodded. “I’d like that. Just don’t want you t’ think I’d let anything distract me from my duties.”
“I know. But duty needs to be leavened by life, sometimes, and even sometimes changed, one duty for another.” Winston nodded at her.
“I take my duties seriously. I chose ‘em, and I made a promise t’ always fulfill ‘em. Might bend a rule here or there, but my job is my life.” She spoke softly, and with conviction. “But one afternoon t’ check up on a friend won’t hurt nothin’.”
Winston nodded. He knew that someday, perhaps someday soon, she would be faced with a choice she did not want to make, to walk away from one duty and to make another. He just hoped it didn’t kill her for it to happen.
She was quiet for a moment, then took a deep breath and began again. “I’ve got the list of potential properties you asked for, and I need t’ run down to accountin’ to see how we’re sittin’ with last month’s acquisition.”
“Good. Thank you.” He tapped a few buttons, then nodded. “That’s all, except this.” He handed over an envelope. “I’m proud to be the deliverer of a raise,. Miss Boudreaux.”
Belle laughed. “This mean I get t’ stay on full time?” A raise. It was. . . strange. She got pay grade increases through the government, and some bonuses and things like that, but nothing so mundane as a per hour increase.
Winston chuckled. “It means you can retire before you are old and gray.” He smirked.
“Blowin’ most of my pay on fu-freakin’ cabs.” She noted with a laugh.
Winston snerked. “Sure…. of course.” He smiled at her, then. “You make a good assistant, Belle. Thank you. Many in your position are not so good at their jobs.”
Belle smiled. “Thank you. It means a lot t’ me. Even if fetchin’ coffee and copies isn’t my life’s dream, it’s important t’ me to be good at my job. I’m glad I could be of help.”
“I know. You are a very trustworthy woman.” He tapped the desk, and then smiled. “There will soon be more work for you, and I hope the world lets us keep doing good work together for some time to come.”
“Ain’t the world that tells me where t’ go an’ what to do.” Belle noted with a shrug. “I’ll be here until I’m not.”
“I know.” Winston smiled to her. “I’ll have a specific job for you, soon, a delivery job.”
“Sure. What and where, or is that none of my business?” She grabbed a pen out of her purse and got ready to write the information down.
“Oh, not yet. But when it is ready, it will involve multiple deliveries of specific items, to multiple people. Nothing dangerous, and nothing illegal, or even immoral.” He grinned at her. “I’ll explain more when things get closer.”
Belle nodded and closed her book up. “Whatever you want, Mr. Frost.” She laughed a little, and wondered, but she knew better than to ask.
“Now, let’s take a walk and see how the business is going…”
