Status: Complete
Jane needed some human contact. Actual human contact and conversation, not just discussing lab results and experiments with lab assistants like she had been doing for the past two weeks it seemed. So after grabbing her coffee and Merlin's, she headed up to his office to drop in on him.
Seeing him bent over his desk with his head buried in what she assumed was work, Jane quietly crept up behind him. Peering over his shoulder, Jane did a double take at the material he had his nose buried in; place settings for a wedding! Stifling a giggle, she leaned over him and, using her deepest most commanding voice, all but bellowed: "Merlin!"
Merlin almost jumped a mile high when Jane snuck up behind him and said his name. He’d had his head stuck in wedding planning ever since he and Audrey had decided on their theme and he’d been so stuck in that mode that he hadn’t even heard her enter the room.
“Bloody hell” he said hand on his chest as he realised who it was, “Jane, cripes. Give a bloke a heart attack”
Jane couldn't help but laugh at him, all but falling into the seat opposite him. "That was the best thing I've seen in a long while!"
“I’m so glad I could entertain you” he told her rolling his eyes but smiling, “To what do I owe the pleasure. Did you hear my telepathic cry for help over wedding things?”
“Well maybe,” Jane smiled, holding up a cup. “I did come with coffee, does that count?”
“Coffee is definitely a great start” he told her, “Now what are your thoughts on a themed wedding?” he asked her.
“Umm...themes are...good?” Jane asked hopefully as she handed over the cup to him.
“We’re going with a Halloween theme for ours” he grinned, “Audrey likes the costume idea”
"Oh right," Jane nodded and leaned forward to look at what Merlin had in front of him. "That sounds cool, what do you think about it?"
“I’m completely happy with whatever Audrey wants” Merlin replied, “I kind of like the idea of being in wizards robes or something” he chuckled.
Jane laughed, “Has she said you can have wizard robes?”
“Not yet” Merlin grinned, “But she’s leaving most of it up to me so...” he shrugged.
“She may end up regretting that I sense,” Jane winked, taking a sip from her coffee. “So, what colours are you looking at for it?”
"Hey, a little more faith please" he protested, "Purple, black, green. We're steering clear of orange, it wouldn’t go too well with Audreys hair"
"Oo, nice," Jane smiled. "Is she a red head then? You guys got a date?"
"Yeah she's a red head" Merlin nodded with a smile, "Around Halloween, as close as we can to fit with the theme. Be a little odd having a Halloween theme in December or something" he teased.
"So you going all spiders and cobwebs for decorations as well? Witches broth instead if punch, zombie fingers instead of those little cocktail sausages on sticks?" she asked, taking a drink.
"I think so. Might as well go the whole hog" Merlin grinned, "At least it'll be memorable"
“It’ll definitely be that,” Jane smiled. “So why are you two being so ‘non-traditional’ then?”
Merlin shrugged, “Audrey liked the idea and we’re not really a traditional type” he replied, “Plus I think she likes the idea of me in wizard robes” he winked.
Jane laughed at that, the image of Merlin as a love-sick puppy at Audrey’s whim was highly amusing to her. “I really need to meet this girl,” she told him, taking a sip of her coffee.
"She owns Baxter Bakery" Merlin told her, "Pop in some time. I know she'd love to meet you"
“Cool, may do just that,” Jane told him. “I’ve been looking for a new place for lunch anyway,” she smiled. “So wizard robes, huh? What about the guests dress code?”
"She has some great sandwiches, freshly made" all named after her friends and loved ones but he'd let Jane discover that on her own. "Guests I think anything along the Halloween theme would be fine. So get thinking" he told her.
“Hmm...how about..Elves, witches or mummies?” she asked, trying to reel off the monsters she’d been told about as a child. “Vampires or ghosts?”
“Sure any of those sound perfect” Merlin said, “Maybe I should do a list of acceptable costumes on our wedding website” he grinned.
“That would probably be a good idea,” Jane agreed with a frown. “You don’t want someone turning up as something tawdry like...the sluttiest genie from the worst porno ever made,” she teased.
Merlin laughed loudly, glad he hadn’t been drinking at that point, “Definitely no slutty genies or anything else from terrible porno films” he said still smiling, “God could you imagine”
“It would certainly make for some interesting wedding photos to send to the folks,” Jane winked at him. “Speaking of folks, are yours still back in England?”
“Not sure interesting is the right word” he chuckled before nodding, “Just my mum. Never knew my dad. She’ll be over for the wedding, just for a week. She’s a right homebody, doesn’t like leaving for long” he smiled, he couldn’t wait for her to meet Audrey.
“Cool,” Jane nodded. “How long has it been since you last saw her? Have she and Audrey ever met?”
“Almost a year now” Merlin said, “I talk to her every week on the phone and she sends over care packages too. Tea mostly. She hasn’t met Audrey yet. As I say she doesn’t travel very often and with the Bakery and here we haven’t had time to go and see her”
“She sounds lovely,” Jane smiled sadly, knowing what it was like to miss your mother, especially when big and exciting things were happening in your life.
“Thanks. You’ll meet her at the wedding too” Merlin replied, “You okay?” he asked noting her sad smile.
“Yeah, I just...” Jane shrugged. “I miss my mom and dad sometimes, y’know,” she quirked a smile at him while running her thumb along the rim of her cup.
Merlin nodded remembering Gwen mentioning Jane had lived with her uncle, “I’m sorry. You’re welcome to share mine” he said with a soft smile, covering her other hand with his, “She’ll probably adopt you anyway”
Jane laughed at that, “That would be nice actually.”
“Well you wouldn’t get a choice. She’s a force to be reckoned with is my mum” he told her,
“She’ll love you, though be prepared to answer questions about your love life. She loves interfering”
“Well, it’ll be a short q and a as there is nothing to report,” Jane told him. “Science is my man, it’s easier that way” she winked.
“Oh no that’ll never do” he teased her, “You’ll be set up with someone by the end of the wedding”
Jane chuckled, a little nervous since she couldn’t quite tell if he was joking or not. “That’s ok, really, I’ve been on a few dates, but nothing’s ever stuck,” she shrugged. “Sometimes I think I should just sleep with my roommate and be done with it,” she joked.
“You’ll find someone” Merlin told her confidently, “I know it. I’d introduce you to someone but most of my friends tend to be girls for some reason. Unless...is your roommate a girl?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Jane chuckled, feeling a blush colour her cheeks. “Darcy’s my best friend, always been there for me and she’s really cool,” she told him. “Unfortunately she has about as much luck with men as I have, so we mostly end up lamenting over ice cream and crappy movies and planning to run away together.”
Merlin smiled, “Are you gonna bring her to the wedding? I wanna see if she’s cute enough for you”
Jane’s eyebrows shot up into her hairline at that. “I hadn’t even thought about that…” she told him in horror.
“Don’t panic, you have time to work out how to ask her” he smiled, “I promise we won’t address the invite to Jane and Darcy” he smirked.
Jane smiled and laughed nervously. She and Darcy had only really joked around about it in the past, she hadn’t even really seen her lately to see what she was doing with herself, they’d both been too busy. “Well, if you address it as a plus one then we can come together as friends anyway,” she deflected. “I’m uh...I’m pretty sure I’m not gay, but I am at the end of the day a scientist and naturally curious,” she joked to try and make light of a conversation she didn’t feel ready to have. Darcy was her best friend in the whole world, she didn’t dare to even think about risking that. “So uh, how about Audrey’s parents? Are they home-grown Americans?”
“Hey, you are what you are. I’m the last one to label people” he told her wryly, after all he’d claimed to be gay until Audrey had blown that completely out of the water. “It’s just her mum now, she retired to Florida after Audrey’s dad died. I haven’t met her yet either”
“So it’s going to be an interesting meet-up then,” Jane joked.
“Oh yeah, could be a total disaster” Merlin replied happily, “But as long as Audrey and I are husband and wife at the end of it I don’t really mind”
“You,” Jane smiled. “Are completely love-struck, aren’t you,” she sat back in the chair and made a sound of a whip cracking.
Merlin spluttered a little but then sighed, “Yeah” he said nodding, “Completely and utterly” he added with a smile that showed he didn’t really mind either.
Jane giggled. “Don’t worry, I don’t think it’s obvious to anyone who’s blind, deaf and dumb,” she winked.
He blushed slightly but nodded with a smile, “I’m not the greatest secret keeper ever” he told her.
“Better than some,” Jane grinned. “Just not when it comes to love,” she teased.
“Exactly, things that need to be kept secret I’m probably good at but honestly I don’t want to hide how in love I am” he grinned.
“And so you shouldn’t,” Jane agreed. “Now, show me your ideas for robes...” she told him.
