Nina was meeting Martha for a catch up over lunch in the canteen, having actually managed to randomly be on a similar shift so their breaks could coincide. Nina was eager to see if Martha had dreamed anything new and of course, to see how things were progressing with Mickey.
She herself had definitely had some interesting and worrying dreams recently, made worse by others checking she was okay. She really hated the dreams sometimes though she probably still wouldn’t be without them if she had to admit it.
Martha liked it when she had a similar shift as Nina or Molly or even both of them, because they were her friends and getting to see one’s friends at work made the day or night or whatever shift they happened to have, go by a little faster. Today, her and Nina happened to have similar shifts, so they had been able to make plans to have lunch together in the cafeteria. Reaching the cafe, Martha glanced around to see if Nina had arrived yet.
Looking up Nina noticed Martha enter and waved her over, she’d managed to get a spot almost in the corner. It made dream talk so much easier when you weren’t surrounded by lots of other conversations.
“Hey, how’s your day so far?” Nina asked greeting her friend.
Spotting Nina as she waved to her, Martha headed over towards the table she had picked out. It was true, it was a lot easier to talk about the dreams in public when there was less chance of being overheard and being dubbed, That One Doctor with the Weird Dreams.
“It’s been alright so far. How about you?” Luckily Martha’s day had been pretty run of the mill; no doctor show style emergencies, so that was a plus.
“It’s been good” Nina replied, “Pretty normal, which I count as a blessing around here” she grinned for a moment. “My roommate and her fiance got caught up in that body switching thing so we’re all glad that’s over with. I deal with enough craziness at work without it bleeding through to home, not that I stand much chance with that because of the dreams but a girl can hope”
“Oh god, I’m so glad that I was skipped with that whole thing.” Martha didn’t know what she would have done if she’d switched bodies with someone else. The last thing she wanted was someone else having complete control over her body; plus that would have just been extremely odd for Mickey, so was sure, “And I know what you mean. My dreams are weird enough.”
“Yeah, me too. I mean Audrey and Merlin were lucky it was each other they switched with but it was still really weird” Nina replied, “Yeah mine have gotten stranger lately too”
Martha was intrigued by what else could have happened in Nina's dreams to take a strange turn, "Do tell." She said as she began unpacking her lunch. Martha preferred to bring her own lunch to work, because it meant spending less money and actually getting something she wanted.
Nina set her own lunch out before embarking upon telling Martha about her latest dreams. "So long and short of it is that I'm now a werewolf too"
“Seriously? How’d that happen?” While Martha battled aliens and things with the Doctor in her dreams, she’d never thought that something could happen to her like that, especially not since it appeared that her dreams might have been over since in her last one, she’d voluntarily left The Doctor.
"I was caught by my boyfriend's claw as he changed" Nina explained, "Then when the next full moon occurred I changed. Kind of sucked" she added but shrugged, "I'm just hoping it doesn't cross over here"
Martha’s brows rose slightly as she listened to Nina’s story, “That would be mad.” Ever since Martha’s last dream when she decided to leave The Doctor, her dream accent had slowly begun to slip into her everyday speech as well as various british slang. The accent wasn’t strong enough for anyone to really notice, but secretly, she hoped it would get stronger and eventually stick around, because she thought her dream accent was much better than her Boston one. “I think there’s a guy on Valarnet who has talked about dreaming about being a werewolf.”
“And inconvenient” Nina nodded. She noticed the changes in Martha’s accent but she found she quite liked it since it reminded her a bit of home. It did however add to her fear that things would start leaking over. “Really? Maybe I should post something?”
“It couldn’t hurt. I don’t know if he’s changed, but he’s talked about being one in his dreams.” Martha had no idea what she’d do if she were a werewolf or some other creature like that. “Is there anyone else from your dream world here? Anyone who has had any bleed over from their dreams?” She was pretty sure that Nina had mentioned that there were others from her dream world there, but didn’t think she’d ever mentioned anything specific.
“Annie and Mitchell are here” Nina said, “Both have had experiences of bleed over” she admitted, “Which is kind of why I’m worrying it might happen to me. I need to speak to them I guess. I’ve found somewhere safe to lock myself away for the night in case anything does happen”
“That’s got to be the most bizarre thing to have to do. I mean, it might never happen, but just taking those precautions has got to be nerve wracking.” She hoped, that for Nina’s sake, her friend would never have to lock herself up like that, “Does anyone else know?” She knew that Nina’s roommate was also a dreamer, but didn’t know if she’d told her about this or not. Or if she’d ever mentioned it to Molly.
“It’s not something I ever imagined doing” Nina agreed, smiling wryly, “Molly. She’s the one who helped me locate a safe place should I ‘transform’ though I didn’t go into much detail” She hadn’t told Audrey yet, her friend was so excited and happy about her wedding she hadn’t wanted to put a damper on anything, especially if it turned out to be a false alarm.
Martha nodded, “Are you going to go there on the next full moon and just wait?” She had no idea how the whole werewolf thing worked other than it generally happened on the full moon. “I could come in the morning to check on you, if you want. Even if you don’t transform.” The doctor part of her was mildly fascinated, curious as to what a morning after for a werewolf was really like.
“Yeah that was pretty much my plan” Nina nodded, “Figure even if I don’t change straight away I’ll just stay there. You know be on the safe side and all that” Smiling she said, “That would be great actually, if you don’t mind. It’d be good to have you there either way”
“I can definitely do that. I can make sure that I’m not on the mornings after the full moon from now on.” If Martha were in Nina’s shoes, she knew that she’d hate to wake up alone after being locked up all night, so Martha wanted to do whatever she could to help her out. “Where did you find a place to lock up?” If anyone overheard their conversation, they would be very confused.
Nina gave her friend a relieved and thankful look, “Oh Martha, thank you. That’s so kind of you” It was definitely a weight off her mind knowing that she wouldn’t be on her own in the morning. “Molly says there’s a secure room down in the morgue. For quarantine purposes usually”
“That’ll be easy to get in and out of then,” Martha was sure that Molly would also be around, so at least Nina wouldn’t be alone completely, but she didn’t think their friend would hang around too closely to the room Nina would be transforming in. Martha loved Molly, but the other woman could be a bit more skittish than either her or Nina.
“Yeah, thankfully. And nobody will question me being at the hospital late and early” Nina didn’t expect Molly to hang around, in fact if she changed she hoped her friend wouldn’t be around as she didn’t want her to have to witness that.
“So, when is the next full moon?” Martha asked, taking a sip of her drink. The moon phases weren’t really something that Martha ever paid any attention to and she was sure that Nina probably hadn’t up until now.
“August 20th” Nina replied, “I’ve got them all marked on my calendar now and I’m making sure my shifts around the dates don’t clash”
“I’ll make sure I have that morning off, so I can come down and check on your first thing.” Martha had no idea what she would find the morning after the full moon, but she’d be there for Nina, whatever she needed.
“Thank you Martha, it means a lot” Nina told her, “I really appreciate it”
“It’s not a problem at all, Nina. I’d do anything for my friends.” And she would. Her friends were one of the most important things in Martha’s life.
