Elizabeth was in the kitchen pouring two cups of coffee out for Sam and herself. They were strong and black, just what the doctor called for on a morning like today. How else were you even supposed to start approaching the fact that your best friend had been switched into the body of a man you had never seen before in your life? Taking a deep breath as she put the spoon she’d been using to stir the drinks to one side, she decided to try and approach the situation. “Sam!” she called to her friend in bedroom, listening for a response. “Sam, please come out so we can talk about this? I made coffee, your favourite blend!”
“What is there to talk about?” Sam called back, “I’m stuck in the body of a man, a man I might add who I had never seen before” But the lure of coffee did eventually make her emerge from the sanctuary of her room. “I hate this county” she grumped, as she flopped down onto the sofa - dressed in pyjamas that fit surprisingly well.
Elizabeth looked over at her friend as she...he...she flopped down on the couch. A smile quirked her lips and she had to take a breath to steady herself before moving over to the couch with the coffees. "Now Sam...can I call you Sam?" she teased gently as she handed over a coffee to her friend, barely suppressing her laugh as she sat on the other end of their couch.
“I may be in a different body but I can still take you down” She warned her friend, though a smile was playing across her/his lips. “This really isn’t fair Lizzie” she almost whined.
"Oh come on Sam," Elizabeth laughed. "This is the weirdest thing that's happened since we've been here, we have to laugh at it," she grinned.
“You wouldn’t be so quick to laugh if it was you stuck in some guys body” Sam replied, “And I don’t mean McCoy’s either” she added knowingly.
"Mmmm..." Elizabeth pretended to drift off into a dream world with a happy smile on her face. "Let's face it though, I'd rather it be the other way around," she winked at Sam before hiding behind her cup of her coffee.
Sam rolled her eyes, which actually looked way more impressive and practiced in Ianto’s body, “You’ve had it the other way round” she pointed out sardonically.
"Yes I did, I'd recommend it it, but he's my medicine I'm afraid," Elizabeth laughed, feeling the warmth of a blush spreading through her cheeks.
Another roll of the eyes, “Honestly I doubt he’d be interested in this anyway” she gestured to her very male body. “Besides I’m happier being the babysitter. It’s been years since I’ve done school level algebra”
"Oh he'd be interested...from a clinical point of view," she grinned. "Babysitting? Who for?" Elizabeth asked, curious as she hadn't heard that before.
“For your man” Sam answered, “He mentioned that Joanna might need the occasional babysitter and since she’s close in age to my brothers kid, I offered” She could have sworn she’d told Lizzie but maybe it had slipped her mind.
“Oh,” Elizabeth replied, unsure how that made her feel. She knew that Leonard had to protect Joanna from too much turbulence in their family life which was why she hadn’t met the little girl yet, but she couldn’t help but feel a little jealous of Sam’s interaction with the girl. “When did that happen?” she asked quietly, all but hiding behind her mug.
“Oh it hasn’t yet” Sam replied, “He just mentioned it on the net so I offered. Figured it’d help you guys out if it freed him up to be with you” she smiled.
Elizabeth smiled at that, dismissing her feelings of irrational jealousy for what they were; ridiculous. “Thanks Sam,” she told her friend. It was weird seeing Sam’s behaviour and words coming from a stranger’s body. “I think you should get on that job then,” she winked at her. “Can you start tomorrow?”
There was definitely nothing to be jealous about when it came to Sam, she’d opened herself up to Gold and then he’d disappeared on her. She wasn’t about to do that again. Nope, science was her man and she’d focus on that for a while more.
“I’ll start just as soon as I get my own body back” she told Lizzie with a frown/pout.
Elizabeth smiled, she knew Sam wouldn’t be leaving the house anytime soon. It really was a weird situation they found themselves in. “Does it...feel any different? You know...inside?” she asked, trying to word it right. Obviously different skin, stubble, bigger hands and feet, but did it feel different to be inside another’s body.
Her friend was right there was no way she’d voluntarily leave the house until this was over and done with. “If I close my eyes and ignore the body I still feel like me” Sam said, “But when I open them it does feel slightly disjointed, like something pushed in where it doesn’t belong”
Elizabeth tilted her head as she cast her gaze over Sam’s new face. “Do you even know whose body you’re in?” she asked quietly.
Sam nodded, “A man called Ianto Jones” she said, “He seems decent enough, quiet but friendly”
“How did you find out? Do you know him?” Elizabeth squinted a little as she looked at the male features again. “I don’t recognise him...”
“I’ve spoken to him once on the net but once the swaps happened I decided to find out exactly who’s body I was in” Sam replied, “Seemed like a good idea”
“Seems sensible,” Elizabeth smiled with a little shrug. “So tell me a little about the man I’m going to be living with for the next few days.”
“Honestly I’ve pretty much told you all I know. He’s quiet, works with video games and looks like this” she gestured to herself.
Elizabeth laughed, “Yes, I can see that. How did it happen? I mean, is there someone...responsible for it?”
“Apparently a woman on the net has claimed responsibility for it, though I can’t see how. I mean theoretically it shouldn’t even be possible to swap one person’s consciousness into another person’s body”
“I really should get on that thing more,” Elizabeth commented, more to herself than Sam. “After all the weirdass dreams we’ve had and the weird experiences we’ve had here, you can still say that things shouldn’t be theoretically possible?” she joked.
“I’m a scientist Lizzie, it’s in my nature to question things” Sam replied, “Besides I have my own theories about everything else. Once I can get into my office I’ll no doubt work out something about this”
“So...you’re letting someone else fix this?” Elizabeth asked, knowing it would rile Sam.
Sam bristled a little at that, “I wouldn’t put it that way. But I am limited to what I am able to do about this particular situation”
"But you could do more from your office, right?" Elizabeth asked innocently from behind her coffee.
“Stop it Lizzie” Sam told her, “I’m not leaving this apartment looking like this”
"Like what? A perfectly normal looking human being?" Elizabeth asked. "Get out there Sam and show the world your brain is brilliant, regardless of the body it's in," she encouraged.
“I’m just not comfortable” Sam told her, brow frowning in irritation, “It’ll be over soon enough and then everything can go back to normal. Well as normal as it gets around here anyway”
“It’s a shame, that’s all I’m saying,” Elizabeth held up the hand not holding her cup of coffee in defense.
Sam hmmph’ed and wrapped her arms around her own cup. Apparently this body was even better at moody than she was, that was one good thing.
"Just don't want you stomping through the house like some recalcitrant teenager," Elizabeth told her. "Besides...aren't you...yknow...curious?" she asked with a knowing grin, hoping it wasn't too subtle.
Sam stuck her tongue out at Elizabeth before giving her a look, “Seriously?” she said, raising her eyebrows, “Getting laid really has given you a one track mind”
Elizabeth nearly sputtered out her coffee on Sam at that. “Sam!” she lightly smacked her friend’s arm. “It’s...I...” she sighed in defeat. “Yeah, you’re probably right...”
Sam smirked, “I’m completely right” she said, “Not saying it’s a bad thing though . It’s good to see you so happy”
Elizabeth grinned and giggled at that, hiding her face behind her hand briefly before schooling her expression and biting her lip, although she wasn’t sure how convincing it was at hiding her happiness. “I am most definitely happier than I have been for a long time,” Elizabeth smiled. “I just hope that he is too,” she admitted. “He can be a little..hard to read when it comes to us.”
Pretty useless at hiding anything but Sam didn't say so out loud. "I get the feeling he's a pretty laid back guy who has maybe been hurt before" she said, "Besides its good for you to have someone you can't read like a book for once" she added knowingly.
“I know, I know,” Elizabeth curled her legs up under her. “His wife really did a number on him it seems and...I love that he challenges me like that, but I hope that we get to a point where he feels like he can open up to me more,” she shrugged.
“I’m sure he will” Sam said, “It will just take time. I know you have the patience Lizzie, just be there for him and it will all come out fine I’m sure”
“Thanks Sam,” Elizabeth smiled. “I’m just...I don’t know, after Simon and his secrets I guess I’m just worried about it happening again,” she shrugged.
“I may not know him very well but Leonard doesn’t seem at all like Simon” Sam told her, “Don’t let him and his twatishness make you doubt this Lizzie”
“I know, you’re right,” Elizabeth nodded, dropping her head and looking into her coffee. She hadn’t told Sam about her main worry she had been left with after being with Leonard the second time. Wasn’t quite sure how to tell her if she were completely honest. Wasn’t even sure she should until she was sure one way or the other.
"Come on" Sam said, "spill it. Something is going on. You're still worried about something"
Elizabeth gave her a tight smile and shook her head. "I'm fine Sam, really I am," she reassured her. "I just..." she shrugged. "I miss him I guess," she told her quietly, running a finger over the handle of her cup.
Sam frowned, "Well I'm here if you need to talk, you know that right?" she said with a small smile.
“I know. Thanks Sam,” Elizabeth smiled. “What about you? Was there anyone on the horizon before…this happened?” she referred to her body.
Sam shook her head, “No, I’ve not really been looking since... well I’ve just not been looking” She still wasn’t sure why Gold had just left, he’d said something about work but his shop and everything else had been in the OC.
“We’ll get through this Sam,” Elizabeth reached over and took hold of Sam’s male hand, meaning more than just the body swap problem. “And when we do, we are going for a long-awaited drink,” she smiled.
Sam smiled, “Too right we are” she agreed squeezing Lizzie’s hand with a nod.
