This is the girl you want to marry some day, Sam.
Who: Sam and Deryn
When: After this
Where: Her place, then off
What: A date
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete
Sam showed up right after work. He realized that they’d probably need to be in early if there was a wedding tomorrow. He knocked on her door and waited. He’d already changed into some cargo shorts and a t-shirt (sexy, right?), and was wearing hiking boots.
Guess where they were going.
The mall? The moon? Disney land?
Deryn laughed when she answered the door -- dressed in a casual jeans and tank top combo, with her usual too-scuffed but totally comfortable combat boots. “Sam! You have to use the key I gave you one of these days!”
“I know, I keep forgetting.” He’d only just remembered as she was opening the door. “Anyway, you ready to go?” He asked, then leaned forward to tap a kiss against her cheek in greeting. He had to bend way over so he could reach her.
And she was on tip toes, too. She thought for a moment that it might benefit her to wear high heels, but then she remembered he’s still be over a foot taller, and she’d fall over a lot more. So maybe not.
“Totally!” She grabbed her messenger bag, stuffing her keys into them, and then bounced out the door. “Where are we going?”
“Hiking.” Sam said, giving her a grin. “I figured we could hike up into the hills and watch the sunset. There’s a place where we can build a fire in the fire pit and roast marshmallows, if you want.” He turned to lead the way back to his car.
“Ooooh,” Deryn said, following him to the car and waiting for it to be unlocked before crawling into the passengers’ side and buckling her seatbelt. “Sounds like fun. Didja get marshmallows?” They should have gotten peanuts too. Feeding chipmunks was basically the most adorable thing on the planet.
Sam didn’t have peanuts. Oh, wait, he had some trail mix. There were peanuts in that. Maybe. It was in his bag with the marshmallows. “I did. I’ve got a backpack back there with a blanket, some water, snacks and marshmallows.” And a lighter, too, for the campfire. He came prepared.
What a little boyscout. Well. Not so little, considering same was like 800 feet tall. But the point remained. Deryn only smiled and wriggled in her seat until she was sitting indian style and tilting her head up to look properly out the window. “I’m excited.”
He was a very large boy scout. ...but not the pedophile kind. “I am, too. I think you’re going to like this trail.” He added. Lots of wildflowers. He imagined sitting in the clearing he liked to visit, and watching her pick the flowers and weave them into a crown. Because that seemed like the kind of thing she’d do.
“It’s not that far, actually. There’s a really long walk that curls up into the hills, and there’s a shorter one that gets pretty steep at the end, then you get this fantastic view of the ocean.”
It was definitely the kind of thing she’d like to do. Sam would definitely get a crown before the evening was over. It reminded her a bit of their brief time in Wonderland. “It sounds wonderful,” she said, and meant it.
Luckily the drive wasn’t all that long, and she didn’t have to wait an exceptional amount for the car to be parked and to bounce out of it happily. “Let’s go!”
Sam chuckled as he climbed out of the car and followed after her, locking it and pocketing the keys. They followed the trail a bit, Sam carrying the backpack and Deryn bouncing around. It was nice. Natural. He wasn’t thinking about the Dreams or his brother or being a monster. They were just two people, enjoying nature, enjoying each other’s company.
After a while, and only one scraped knee that didn’t even really require a bandaid, but got one anyway, because it was hard to resist neon colored strips, they happened along the clearing. Deryn was a little sweaty by then, but not in a bad way, just in a naturally exerted sort of way.
“This has to be it,” she declared, and then flopped down into the grass with a bright laugh.
Sam was grinning as he followed behind Deryn. They were both a little sweaty, but the sun was going down now, and the shadows were getting longer. It felt good, a little cooler against their skin. He dropped the backpack on the ground next to Deryn and then plopped down himself.
“Well, there’s an abundance of wildflowers, this must be the place.” He offered, giving her a smile.
Deryn had realized that, since even on her back, laying in the grass, she was stretching out a bit to pick the nearest flower she could reach. “Let’s just live here.”
“Okay.” Sam chuckled. He gave a sigh, then flopped down onto his back as well, staring up at the clouds in the sky. They were spattered with some pretty amazing colors in the slowly sinking sun.
“Good,” Deryn said, as if they had really just decided on something doable. Of course you could camp out and live on a hiking trail, silly. She rolled over and crawled up onto her knees, collecting flowers and humming to herself.
Sam turned to watch her. This was so different from his job, so different from how he spent most of the hours of his day. It made him feel alive to be out here. “We should plan a camping trip.” He said, suddenly, watching her gather flowers. “Hiking, camping, spend a few days on the trail, sleeping under the stars.”
Once she had more than a few, she plunked down next to him, leaning against his side, and started braiding them together. “Think so?” she asked, but sounded pleased about it. “I like that idea a lot, actually. But I dunno how to build a tent. Is that a problem?”
“Nah, that’s not a problem. They make tents now-a-days that are really easy to put up. We’ll have to go buy one, though.” Sam didn’t even own a sleeping bag. He had a great hiking backpack, but he didn’t have the other stuff one would need for an overnight trip out into the wilderness.
That was okay, they could spend a little extra on stuff that could be used often and last a long time. Deryn nodded, seeming to be sated by that particular answer, and then moved to tuck a flower into Sam’s hair behind his ear.
Sam lifted his hand to take hold of hers by his ear, then tugged her closer to him, moving his hands up her arms, pulling her down against him so he could kiss her. It was hella romantic.
Hella romantic indeed. Deryn laughed into the kiss, like she always did, and then leaned closer yet until poor Sam would be forced to swallow up those giggles and taste them on his tongue.
So, it was your average, passionate, loving kiss between Sam and Deryn. He loved the taste of her giggles, the way his arms felt around her. It made him smile. His lips smiling against her laugh.
Basically, it was perfect. At least, that was what Deryn thought. Finally, she needed to breathe, and so wriggled up enough where she was straddling his waist instead of laying on him. “Hello.”
Sam gave a chuckle. “Hello.” He said, smiling up at her. His hands came to rest on her thighs on either side of his body. “It’s not getting too cold for you, is it?” Soon they’d have to go back. The sun was already down now.
They wouldn’t have to go back. They’d have to build a fire and roast marshmallows. Until then. “You could borrow me your sweatshirt.”
Sam would if he could. But she was pinning him to the ground. His sweatshirt was in the backpack and was slightly out of arm’s reach. “...you get the sweatshirt and the marshmallows, and I’ll find us some wood for a fire.”
That only made sense. Deryn made a face, poked her tongue out at him and then promptly rolled off of him. She didn’t get up so much as just drop over and tuck and roll. She giggled wildly as she did so until she managed making it over to his backpack.
This is the girl you want to marry some day, Sam.
Sam watched her go, smiling warmly, then climbed to his feet to gather the firewood. He absolutely planned on marrying her some day. Some day soon.
