While Tywin had told his children through an e-mail, Olenna needed to tell Loras and Margaery in person. She had no intention of telling Mace or her daughters for the time being, but she had moved to Orange County to be near Loras and Margaery and if her and Tywin were going to be seeing each other again, they were the only ones who needed to know at the moment. So, she had asked her grandchildren to come over for dinner.
Was it so unusual that their grandmother should invite them for dinner? She’d said nothing was wrong, although that had been the first conclusion that Loras had jumped to. He didn’t fully believe her, but he arrived anyway. After dinner with his grandmother, he was sure he’d need to put in an extra hour of kickboxing in the morning, but eating seemed to be something he did more of these days, since Renly had returned.
Margaery wasn’t worried at all. She was curious, after all Olenna wished to speak with them but they would find out in due course. She was looking forward to dinner with her brother and grandmother, she’d been busy lately what with the internship and everything so a chance to see how they both were was most welcome.
Olenna hadn’t made anything too heavy for dinner, so Loras wouldn’t have to do too much extra exercise the next day. She’d thought about asking them to come over just for tea, but it had been some time since she’d gotten to make dinner for her grandchildren and dinner meant that she would be able to spend a little more time with them as opposed to tea, which would have been a much shorter visit.
By the time Loras and Margaery showed up, she had the dining room table set and dinner was almost finished cooking, “What would you like to drink?” While it would have been perfectly acceptable for them to get their own drinks, if they wanted them, tonight Olenna had invited them over, so she was hostess tonight as well as grandmother.
Though he was loathe to admit it, Loras was a stereotypical queer who liked to go to dinner parties and look at the array of decorations and food. Even though his grandmother hadn’t gone too far out of her way, Loras still felt a twinge of excitement when he saw everything. He leaned in and pressed a kiss to his grandmother’s cheek. “Hello to you, too,” he greeted, still nervous about tonight’s meeting. There was something that his grandmother needed to tell them, he knew it because he knew his family. “I’d love a drink,” he said, thinking that there was definitely a reason she was offering drinks straight away.
“This looks lovely grandmother” Margaery said as they entered the dining room, “You’re making me worry that I’ve forgotten an important occasion” she smiled. Knowing she hadn’t but hoping it might encourage her to tell the siblings what the news was. “I’d love a drink too, would you like me to get them?” she offered to help.
“No. No one has forgotten anything,” Truthfully, Olenna was enjoying the fact that her grandchildren both appeared nervous about what it was that she had to tell them. She may have loved her grandchildren more than anyone else, but even she found some amusement in making them sweat a little. “And I can get it.” She went back into the kitchen to retrieve the bottle of wine she had gotten for tonight. Loras might have been underage in America, but back home he was already of age to drink, so she saw no reason not to serve a little wine with dinner. Returning to the dining room, she filled all three glasses, “Now, first things first, tell me what you have both been up to lately.” She wasn’t about to tell them about her and Tywin right off the bat.
As their grandmother disappeared into the kitchen, Loras looked over at his sister to silently ask if she knew what was happening. He shrugged up his own shoulders, a bit confused. They were reading too much into it, that was what it was. Their grandmother just wanted to invite them for dinner. What other family was there in the states after all? When she returned, Loras smiled at her and took one of the filled wine glasses into his hand. He looked over at Margaery, nodding for her to go first, as per knightly protocol.
Margaery shook her head as Loras looked at her and received a shrug in return. It appeared that neither of them knew what their grandmother was up to. She soon reached the same conclusion as her brother, maybe they were reading too much into things. Their grandmother wanted their company that was all.
“I’ve taken that internship with the law firm over the summer” she told Olenna, taking her wine glass with thanks, “So that’s been keeping me pretty busy”
Margaery had told her about her internship when she’d come for tea right after Olenna had moved into the condo, “I do hope you’re not working too hard, sweetheart. You’re still young and deserve to have some fun every now and then.” She took a sip of her wine and turned to Loras, “And what about you, Loras? What have you been up to recently?” What she really wanted to know was if her grandson had decided exactly when he was going to propose to Renly.
What hadn’t Loras been up to? Really, he thought his life might never slow down, between Obi-Wan and Renly. He traced a finger along the stem of his wine glass as he spoke. “As both of you know, I did buy a ring for Renly, but I’m still not sure when to propose,” he answered. “And Obi-Wan and I still have to discuss what we’re going to do about the dogs. I feel like we’re discussing custody of children.” Obi-Wan may as well be his first husband.
Margaery’s face was bright and happy when Loras mentioned the ring, she was beyond excited for her brother and his soul mate and true love. Loras and Renly deserved the happiness here that they hadn’t gotten to have in the dreams and Margaery was looking forward to seeing that for many years to come.
“Well you practically are” she pointed out, “Honestly the way you talk about them they might as well be children” she teased, not that she herself was much better but that wasn’t the point right now.
Olenna glanced at Margaery, “And what will you do if your brother and Renly move in together? Will you continue to live with Obi-Wan?” Olenna did have an extra bedroom, but she didn’t know if Margaery would want to live with her grandmother or would prefer to get a place of her own. Either way, she would more than likely make the offer. Before Margaery could answer the timer on the stove went off, signaling dinner was ready, “Would you both be so kind as to help me bring the serving dishes out here?” It would move things along much quicker than if she did it all on her own.
“I’m giving the house to the both of them,” Loras answered, looking his his sister almost apologetically for answering for her. It would be a little complicated at first, but Loras had no doubt that they could work it out. It would be like it was before, just without Loras around to tell them (well, really just Obi-Wan) to clean something up or to laugh at jokes.
When prompted, Loras began to help set the table.
Margaery smiled at her brother, she didn’t mind him answering in the least. “It should work out fine, Obi and I get along well” she said, though she was open to leaving should the need arise. it had been Loras and Obi’s house first after all, she had only joined them because her brother had been there.
She joined Loras in helping their grandmother bring out the dishes for dinner.
Olenna was glad that they had a plan and that it wouldn’t be awkward for Margaery and Obi-Wan to live together without Loras. “Now Loras simply needs to propose,” She smirked, teasing her grandson as they finished setting the table and finally sat down to eat. She would tell them about Tywin momentarily, but she wanted Loras and Margaery to start eating first.
“I will,” Loras promised.
There was still lingering curiosity as to why they were there. Loras tucked into his own first. In his dreams, it was always the man who ate before everyone else and that little bit was subconsciously ingrained in him now. He hummed around his bite before he swallowed. “This is delicious,” he complimented.
Once Loras had started Margaery followed, she too followed dream protocol more than she realised. It influenced her behaviour and even sometimes how she spoke, though that always sounded more formal thanks to her accent which was more obvious than Loras’.
“It really is lovely grandmother” Margaery smiled in agreement.
"I'm glad you like it," Olenna smiled, taking a few more bites, herself, before she decided to was the best time to tell them about Tywin, "I'm sure you're both wondering exactly what it is that I wanted to talk to you both about this evening." She took a sip of her wine then placed the glass back down on the table, "Well, recently, I have been seeing someone. Someone I dated before I met your grandfather." She had never mentioned her previous relationships to her child or her grandchildren before, so there was no way for them to even guess who she could be talking about just yet.
And here we went. Loras almost responded that yes, yes he was very curious, but he needn’t respond, nor did he need to wonder any longer. Just now, he was simply happy for her, albeit a bit ignorant thus far. He smiled at her. “Really?” he asked. “Do we know them?” He took a bite that had been poised between his plate and mouth. He didn’t mention gender, because he wasn’t really one to talk should his grandmother turn out to not want anything more to do with the opposite sex.
Margaery inclined her head slightly at her grandmothers comment regarding their wondering what she wanted to tell them, though Olenna knew they’d be curious anyway.
Once Loras spoke Margaery nodded, “Yes grandmother do we know them? You’ve never told us about before you met grandfather before” she added encouraging her grandmother to talk now.
"There honestly isn't much to tell about before I met your grandfather. I've only ever loved two men. Luthor was the love of my life, but there was one before him," Olenna took another sip of her wine before continuing, "You may have heard of him before. His name is Tywin Lannister." Little did she know that her grandchildren were very familiar with the Lannisters and not simply because of their connection in the circle their family ran in.
As she continued, Loras nearly choked on a bite he’d taken. Quickly, he grabbed his wine glass by the stem and took some swallows to prevent himself from doing just that. He patted lightly at his chest and swallowed, hard. “Tywin Lannister?” he managed after a few moments, the words almost a croak in his throat. The shock of not only hearing the name but hearing that his grandmother was seeing this man was enough make Loras feel a bit ill.
Margaery lowered her wine glass to the table, watching her brother in concern until he spoke, when she switched her attention to her grandmother. “You’re in a relationship with Tywin Lannister?” she asked softly, her voice belying the emotions she was experiencing. Her grandmother had yet to experience the dreams, she had to remember that but still of all people for Olenna to be dating.
While Olenna had expected them to be surprised that she was seeing someone, after all these years, she hadn’t quite expected her grandson to almost choke or for the way her granddaughter had asked that question. It were almost as if they knew something she didn’t know and she quirked a brow at them, “Yes. Tywin Lannister. I believe his son-in-law is Renly’s brother.” She said, glancing over at Loras. It was entirely possible that he was simply surprised that she would wind up with such a close connection to his boyfriend’s family, but that still didn’t explain Margaery’s reaction.
Loras rubbed at the back of his neck, trying to keep himself from just slamming his hands down on the table and forbidding such a thing (something he might do in his other life). “Has he uh,” he started, trying to think of a good question to ask that wouldn’t put their grandmother in the spotlight too much. “Has he had any dreams?” He paused, thinking how ridiculous that sounded, then tried again. “Dreams that are like the ones some people mention around here, I mean.”
Margaery’s eyes flicked to her brother when he asked the question, smiling softly when he explained it a little more. She knew what he wanted to say and part of her wanted him to. Of all people to be involved with why did it have to be a Lannister and Tywin Lannister at that. Still she awaited her grandmothers answer with quiet grace.
Olenna had heard quite a lot about the dreams that most of the members of Valarnet seemed to have and she had been contemplating asking Loras and Margaery if they’d had these dreams as well, “No, I don’t believe that he has.” She was sure that had Tywin been having the same types of dreams that everyone talked about, he would have found something about them to complain about.
That really said nothing. Tywin Lannister wasn’t exactly known for his honesty, at least not to Loras. But, for now, Loras had no other choice but to put on the mask he always had. He smiled at his grandmother. “I think I’ll have more wine.”
“Well anyway, as long as you are happy grandmother” Margaery smiled, “It is good to see you smile” She moved her glass towards Loras with a look that asked him to re-fill her glass too. They’d have to discuss this later.
Olenna was still quite puzzled by their reactions, but she had to admit the evening was going better than she'd expected. Neither of them had gotten upset that she was seeing someone, so that was a plus, "And I can assure you that I am quite happy."
Yes. Happiness was important, even though Loras still felt an unsettled pang in his gut. He was glad to have more wine and poured his sister’s glass for her, topping it off with what would have usually been too much. He wouldn’t drink much, he had to drive later, just enough to take the edge off.
