Verity headed into Jefferson’s shop. She was looking for either Jefferson, to talk about clothes stuff, or Alice, for all the girly things that girls went looking for other girls for. She poked her head around, trying to ignore the men’s clothing. Looking at it made her start thinking about all the men in her life, and that was just confusing.
She walked straight to the register and waited for Alice to show up.
Alice smiled when she saw who was waiting for her at the register. Bouncing closer, she reached out to hug her friend, unable to keep from laughing. “You look gorgeous,” she laughed.
Verity beamed, happy to hug her friend. It was a good thing Alice was around. Verity needed someone to keep her sane. Someone she didn’t want to boing. “It’s just your Jefferson’s amazing clothes,” she said, giving a little spin. “I swear maternity wear sucks. Except for Jefferson’s stuff. How are you?” She asked, giving Alice her attention again.
“He’s a wonder, isn’t he?” Alice grinned, noticing how happy and glowy Verity looked. “I’m good, I’m good! You look particularly glowy, or am I hallucinating?”
“No, you’re definitely not hallucinating.” Verity said, going rather pink. There was just too much to tell in a few minutes, she needed a bit more time. And possibly an iced tea. “Do you have a break coming up? We can take a little walk?”
“I can take one now.” Alice went over to a coworker and told her she was going to take a break. Alice was kind of the de facto manager because she had the most retail experience. She went over to her friend and took her hand, beaming.
Verity took Alice’s hand and walked out of the shop with her. They had to take it a little slow, as Verity was both a little tired from carrying around the extra weight, and a little unsteady on her feet. “...I’ve been seeing people differently.” She said, then frowned. “No, that’s not right. I’ve been... in a mood lately.”
“Well, pregnancy hormones are supposed to make you horny as hell around this time,” Alice shrugged. “One of the waitresses at the club I worked at in New York was pregnant.”
"That's. .. alarmingly accurate." Verity said with a little laugh. Her cheeks were pink. "And not getting any regularly is killing me. Or... was." She was getting some now.
Alice raised a brow. “Who is he?” She couldn’t help but grin, squeezing her friend’s hand excitedly.
“You want to know the really messed up part? He’s just... a friend.” She was kinda crazy about him, though. “...Roland. And then... then there’s Charlie,” another guy she was kinda crazy about. “And Steve.” Can’t forget Steve. “But Roland is the only one I’ve... yeah. Charlie asked me on a date. And I can’t help but have a crush on Steve. And Roland and I have been spending a lot of time together. It’s all a bit of a mess.”
Alice’s brows went up a bit higher. “I know how that goes. You’ve just described most of my life.” Alice couldn’t help but hug her friend. “Roland sounds like a gem, though. Honestly, most guys are assholes when it comes to women who’re pregnant.”
“Obi introduced us. He’s really... they’re really supportive. I’m just... crazy about Roland. But I don’t... I don’t know if he... I don’t know.” She shook her head a little. “And then there’s Charlie, and Charlie’s just so... cute. And he likes me, I think. I mean, we had a really nice lunch date.”
“The best thing you can do, Verity, is just be honest.” Alice smiled and kissed Verity’s hand. “Just let them know there’s a few people in the picture, that you’re single and not exclusively dating any of them.” She’d been in that situation before too.
Verity gave a little nod, walking alongside her friend. “I don’t think that things are serious enough for something like that, but... you’re right. I’ll make sure that they know.” It was a good idea. Alice was full of those. Though, sometimes it was a bit easier said than done to be open and honest about these sorts of things.
“Really, communication is the best thing possible. Speaking of.” Alice couldn’t help but bounce. “You’re not the only one who’s actually been getting some. Kinda. Almost. ... we got to third?” It was a huge step, considering she and Jefferson had only been making out the whole time they’d been dating.
“Oh my gosh, that’s great!” Verity said, giving a bright grin and a bounce in her own step. Well, as much as she could with the basketball under her shirt. “I mean... I bet it was amazing. Was it amazing??” She asked, giving a little sigh. Alice and Jefferson were so very much in love, and Verity missed that. She had sex with Roland, but she wanted to be in love again.
“It was amazing. I mean, it was only hands under the skirt, but we did it in his office.” Alice went beet red.
Verity gave a giddy squee. “Oh, Alice! I’m so happy for you two! ...you’re... going for more, right? You two are... or are you waiting for the wedding night?” She asked, grinning brightly, in a sing-song voice.
“Oh, god, we’re not getting married any time soon. I don’t know, I just want to do it at his pace. I know he’s got all this love in his heart, I’m just impressed that he’s able to love me. Lord knows I’d be wrecked if he died. It would take me years to come back from that.” She’d probably spend most of those years in her bedroom.
“Well, that’s good. Going at his pace is good.” Verity gave Alice a bright smile. “You’re so patient. Gosh, I’ve been going crazy in this hormonal body without release. I mean, without... a man to give it to me. Until Roland. I mean.”
Alice laughed. “What, you don’t have a battery operated one?”
“Well, yeah...” Verity blushed a bit. “But it’s totally different. There’s... cuddling. And kissing. I miss the kissing.” She said, almost shyly.
“That, I get.” Alice smiled. Jefferson did this thing where he cradled her face and stroked her hair. It made her feel loved and cosy. “I don’t cuddle a whole lot - but I understand wanting the love more than just the sex.”
“It’s really hard for me to separate the two,” Verity said. “Historically, I mean.” Perhaps Roland was bringing that out in her. “That’s why it was so weird when you and Oliver... I mean... that’s why it was so hard for me to... “ She simply shook her head. Funny how that felt like ancient history now. “But now I think I’m starting to understand.”
Alice smiled sadly. “I’m glad we got to be friends, you know. One night stands are easy to find. Friends? Not so much.” Alice wrapped her arms around Verity and knew she’d made the right choice to stay in the OC.
Verity wrapped her arms around her friend in return. “I’m glad we’re friends, too.” She said, giving a smile. She really didn’t know what she’d do without Alice. “Oof,” she added, then lowered a hand to her tummy. “She’s moving.”
“Here,” Alice beamed. She ran her hands over Verity’s stomach in a gentle, circular motion. It was half massage, half greeting the baby, and she hoped Verity found it soothing. “One of the girls I worked with in Miami was about seven months in. She stopped dancing and did makeup for us and we all gave her a quarter of our tips.” It had been a little community, a little island of woman that felt like a family.
Verity nodded, moving her hand out of the way where Alice was massaging her tummy. “Funny how my body really isn’t my own anymore.” In a way she belonged to the baby. In another, she belonged to everyone. Human beings as a whole all had a role to play in her life now, her future with her child.
“Does this help? I know there’s lots of mommy massage places.” Alice hoped that Verity didn’t mind her just touching.
“No, it’s fine.” Verity said, giving her friend a smile. “I got a prenatal massage, and now I’m starting to feel like I need another one.” She added. “That and chocolate. I always need chocolate.”
“Well, we could always both go get massages and then get some chocolate. There’s places around here that take walk-ins.” Alice beamed. “My feet always need massaging, too many years spent dancing in six inch heels.”
Verity beamed. “Do you think you can take that much time off of work? We should probably make an appointment. I’d hate to keep you from your job for that long.”
“Oh, I haven’t taken lunch today, I can take a longer one.” She pulled out her phone and called the shop just to double check that it was okay. Upon finding out it was, she grinned.
Verity nearly bounced and clapped. “Then lead the way!” She couldn’t wait to get that massage. She felt like she’d earned it. Hell, she needed it.
Alice knew of a place nearby, and she guided Verity toward her car. She’d gotten it for Christmas from Thor and Oliver, but she couldn’t bear to part with it. “Here, I don’t want you walking in this heat.”
Verity let Alice guide her to the car, noticing for the first time that she was starting to sweat. She’d have to get a water bottle once they arrived at the Spa, or wherever it was they were going. Massage parlor? Anyway, she slipped into the car and gave a gentle “thanks” to her friend. It was nice to take a load off.
“No problem.” Alice pointed the car in the direction of a day spa that was nearby. She’d walked by it a few times on her way to get coffee and always wanted to go in. It helped that they took walk-ins.
When they were parked and Alice had opened the door for Verity, Alice smiled and walked to the counter. “Hi. We’d both like full body massages, mani-pedis, and a facial if you’ve got time?” The clerk was excited to have some customers and immediately they were shown toward an area to get their nails done. This was going to be much deserved and totally relaxing.
