Saying goodbye to Sam was always difficult, even if it was just for a few weeks at a time. This trip would prove to be much longer, but Lara was a Croft, she could survive without her bestie.
It might be nice to not be dragged away from her books for all hours of clubbing and dancing. She let it happen because it made Sam happy, and though she'd never admit it, she had fun.
Still, a cross-Atlantic and cross-country flight on a hang-over hadn't been the smartest idea she'd ever had. She'd fallen asleep, nose buried in a thesis that had been recommended to her, on the similarities between creation myths.
After landing, she headed towards her family's beach house, and stopped inside a little cafe to try to wake herself up.
She was flipping through it when she heard a woman's voice say cheerily. "Brilliant, you're reading my thesis!"
Lara blinked and looked up at a dark-haired woman. She wasn't sure she heard correctly. "Pardon?"
"What you're reading. I wrote it. Maia Amell." Maia held out her hand, her eyes twinkling in mischief.
She shook Maia's hand. "Lara Croft. That's a pretty interesting coincidence, actually." She looked down at the paper and noted the name. She looked back up at Maia. "Your theories are very compelling and I find your evidence convincing, it's no wonder this was recommended by my professor. A lot of it I understood objectively but it hadn't been put together in one place for me until I read your paper."
Maia plunked into a seat. "Really?"
Lara's enthusiasm swelled as she latched onto a subject near and dear to her heart. She practically lit up. "Well, love of ancient things runs in my family. I went to University for it, too. I'm putting together an expedition, once I can narrow down a site. I particularly love your focus on the far east."
Thoroughly distracted, Maia propped her elbows on the table and rested her chin on her hands. "It would help to have a destination before you start planning, love."
"There are three sites I really want to explore," Lara continued. "Ideally I'll visit them all, but I need to decide which will be the most rewarding." She smiled, the expression at once nervous and yet full of promise.
Maia was reminded of not that long ago when she was fresh out of school. And here she was back again. Only she was going to be teaching a class when the semester started. It was mildly terrifying of a thought. "I'm sure you'll figure it out. You seem really smart, love. Maker, but I've always loved girls with brains."
"Thank you." Lara folded up the paper, oblivious to the flirting. "I'd like to chat again. We could discuss the differing theories behind the disappearance of the Roanoke colony."
"Is that on the list?"
Lara laughed. "No, but I've always wanted to visit." She got up, and picked up her cup. Maybe California wouldn't be so bad after all.
