Some woman wanted a picture of me and her baby. So um… she just sort of tossed it at me.
Who: Link and Zelda
When: Mid to late August
Where: DISNEYLAND
What: The start of an amazing day, and Zelda was tossed a baby.
Rating/Warning: Baby tossing. KIDDING! Low/None. It’s Link and Zelda, people.
Status: Complete!
Between Zelda’s filming schedule and Link’s life on the farm, it was difficult to find days when they could both get away from home at the same time. But when it worked out, they always did whatever they could to make the most of it. It had been a long time since their date at Disneyland, so Link was pretty excited when Zelda suggested they go back. They’d sort of just been testing the waters back then. This time, they were officially dating, and there would be much less overthinking things on his part. Link was looking forward to that.
It was really, really early when the car picked her up. They went to Link's place to get him, too, and Zelda climbed out of the back, looking tired but excited. She headed to his door and knocked. The sun was barely up.
The start to the day would have been easier if they’d be coming from the same house, but their time together was not always under their own control. It was given to them, Zelda with her film schedule and Link according to Mother Nature.
He greeted Zelda with a warm hug and a kiss, even though there were dark circles under his eyes.
Zelda returned both the hug and the kiss, thankful to have him for the whole day. She snuggled in close for just a moment, enjoying being in his arms, then pulled back to give him a slightly brighter smile than before. “Hi.”
“Morning,” he said, still holding on to her, even though they were a few steps apart. “You have coffee in there, I hope.” If she didn’t, he was about to be stunned.
"When do I not have coffee?" Zelda asked, grinning a still tired but happy grin. She turned and led him back to the rented car, then climbed in first and let him follow. The thing wasn't quite a limo, but it was close. She pulled out two large travel mugs, both with fancy coffee, a touch of sugar, and sparkling milk in them. She held one out to Link.
He was getting used to Zelda’s coffee preferences. The smell of the sugar reminded him of her. He unscrewed the cap and took a long drink. “I definitely needed that,” he said, as he felt his brain coming back to life.
Once he had the coffee and was drinking it, they were both settled into the back of the car, Zelda sipped from her own. The car started to pull out of the drive and onto the street. Zelda’s hand found Link’s between them, and she laced her fingers with his. “It’s definitely a coffee kind of morning. Or a Red Bull one.” She added, grinning a little.
Link smiled at her, his eyes still bleary, but brighter at the rush of her palm against his. He held it throughout the ride, keeping the coffee in his other hand. It was about a forty-five minute drive to Disneyland from his front door.
They pulled up to the special entrance, and the driver let them out of the car. Zelda gave him a smile and her thanks, then they headed into the building where Elaine, the plaid vest was waiting to greet them.
Zelda broke into a huge smile, and gave the woman one of the biggest hugs ever. (The coffee was kicking in, apparently.) Elaine returned the hug, and the two women parted so that Elaine could offer her hand to Link, too.
“It’s good to see you again, Mister Link.” Elaine said. More of her red hair had gone grey, and she had it back in a long braid, reaching almost her waist. She’d put on a couple of pounds, too, since they’d last seen her.
Most of those changes went unnoticed by Link, who had probably been too focused on Zelda during their first visit to notice much of anything else. Even the park itself, perhaps. He shook Elaine’s hand and smiled politely. Not everyone had a guide when they came to Disneyland. One thing he did remember was how hard the woman worked. “It’s good to see you, too.”
“Well! Are we ready to go, then?” Elaine said, withdrawing her hand and smirking a knowing smirk as she glanced between the two of them.
Zelda went slightly pink at the look on Elaine’s face. As if Elaine knew. Whatever she knew, she certainly knew it. Zelda slipped her hand into Link’s again, as if an answer to Elaine’s assumption. Yes. This is real. He’s my boyfriend now. “Ready!” Zelda responded.
And together the three of them headed from the building and into Downtown Disney, to head to the park’s entrance. There was a place where they could enter on the far side.
“Where would you like to go first?” Elaine asked as they maneuvered through the turnstile.
Coming out from beneath the train tracks, Link squinted into the sun as he took in the Main Street area. With so many people buzzing about, he felt a little overwhelmed already. It was difficult to focus on anything in particular. “Um, forward…?” he said, and it did sound a little like a question. There really was only one direction they could go.
Elaine laughed. It was true; that was the only direction they could go. “Onward, then!” She said, stepping forward to lead them through the crowd. It wasn’t that crowded, really. It could have been a lot worse. It was still early in the day.
Zelda gave Link’s hand a squeeze. “I want to go see Mickey.” Maybe they could get into Toon Town early.
Had they seen Mickey on their first trip? Well, other than all over the place… No, they hadn’t had their picture taken. Link was pretty sure of that, pretty sure he would have remembered. He squeezed Zelda’s hand and smiled, “Okay, sure.”
Eliane walked forward, and then around the castle, where they took a right and continued on past It’s A Small World. There was a sign for Toon Town up ahead.
It was a pretty good walk from the front gate back to Toon Town, but it seemed to fly by with Link’s hand wrapped around Zelda’s, and the sights and sounds from the rest of the park. All Elaine had to do was show off her plaid vest, and the couple were let into Toon Town early, for the Toon Town Morning Madness activity. They were able to sit and watch a show with Mickey, Minnie and the rest of the gang, and were given buttons to remember their experience. Then the crowd was released to go interact with the characters who spread around Toon Town.
Zelda jumped up from her chair to go chase after Mickey, but was stopped when a young woman--a fan--came charging over, holding a six month old baby. “Here! Hold my baby for a photo!” She said, then thrust the thing into Zelda’s arms.
She smiled awkwardly, holding the baby under its armpits, and said ‘cheese’ as the woman started snapping photos on her iPhone.
Elaine came over, accepted the infant from Zelda and passed it back to its mother. “No photos, please.”
Link was only a few steps behind. Being in a large crowd tended to dull his reflexes, or so he was learning. Zelda seemed much more nimble, at least. Or so he thought, until he saw her suddenly stop short with a baby in her arms. Had someone just handed her a baby?
He jogged up to them in time for Elaine to swoop into action. The baby was passed back to his or her family, leaving Zelda with an awkward smile and Elaine looking rather stern. Link reached out and touched Zelda’s arm. “What was that about?”
Zelda was still a little shocked from that whole ordeal. She shook her head a bit. “Some woman wanted a picture of me and her baby. So um… she just sort of tossed it at me.”
Elaine came back over to usher Zelda and Link away from the crazy woman with the iPhone. “I’m so sorry, Ms. Hyrule. She came out of nowhere.”
Link was pretty sure the baby couldn’t have been more than a few months old. The idea of tossing a baby at someone was pretty weird as it was. He wrapped his arm around Zelda, trying to comfort her. She looked pretty shaken, but at least it wasn’t anything worse than a photo op. “I guess that’s what you get for being famous,” he said, with a low chuckle.
“Yeah, guess so. It’s really okay, Elaine. She must have been crazy.” She said the latter bit only loud enough for the three of them to hear. Last thing she wanted to see was the tabloids saying how mean she was to fans or about fans. “That baby was tiny, though. I mean… it was so light.”
Link had never held a baby before. Well, not a baby person, anyway. Chicks and calves, yes. He figured Navi’s baby would be his first. “Well, I’m glad you caught it,” he said. He glanced at Elaine, hoping for a little privacy for a moment. When she walked away, he gave Zelda a tight hug.
Zelda returned the hug, giving a little sigh. “It wasn’t literally thrown… more like… thrust.” She said, turning to bury her nose into his chest. There were probably people who noticed who she was, people taking pictures to be sold to the tabloids, but she didn’t care. Link was the best boyfriend on the face of the planet and she wanted to cuddle with him.
“I’m not really good with babies,” she added, blushing a bit. Though, her voice was muffled into his shirt.
“Well, I think you have time before you need to worry about that,” he said, sort of nonchalantly. He moved his lips to kiss the tip of her pointed ear, knowing exactly where it was hidden beneath her hair.
“A little, I suppose.” She was thinking about Navi’s baby. And Link’s ear kisses. Her ear wasn’t huge yet, but it was definitely pointed. Perhaps it was going to come in phases? However Zelda felt about her ears growing, she felt completely wonderful about Link kisses. A grin spread across her face at it.
Link’s mind noiselessly drifted for a moment, to some point in the future, when there might be a baby for both of them to hold. He knew a lot of things had to fall into place, first, but it was possible that wasn’t so far away, wasn’t it? A complete family was something he’d wanted for a long time, even if most guys his age were looking for something different. He felt older than he was.
“Yeah, a little,” he said as he pulled back a bit. His face was warm from blushing, too.
“It’s fine. It’s worth the wait.” Zelda said, turning her eyes up to his face to grin. “...we should go get some autographs. What do you think?” Elaine could get them one of those autograph books with the slots for photographs, and they could be like kids again, getting a picture with every character in the park.
Getting some autographs sounded much better than having to give any. Link nodded, and felt his face turn an even deeper pink. This was the first they had ever talked about being together for a long time and it felt very natural. Having kids, getting married. Maybe they weren’t so far off.
“It’ll be a keepsake to show the grandchildren one day.” Zelda said, her cheeks rather pink. She turned to flag Elaine down and ask if she could get them an autograph book.
Elaine wandered off quickly, to go to the nearest shop and grab one for them.
Zelda turned her attention back to Link. “So… Mickey Mouse?”
Link was able to nod again. “Yeah,” he managed to get out. Mickey Mouse. That sounded good.
