Sitting in the living room Tonks was looking over her wedding file on the laptop wondering how to contact everybody in the quickest way possible now that Mac had agreed that they should postpone the wedding. Wasn’t like they could get married as they were after all.
She’d asked AJ to come over so she could talk to her in person, and she figured it would be nice to see Mac’s face too even if it wasn’t him in there. She thought AJ might feel the same too.
AJ had been spending this time hiding away from Tonks and Mac. She didn’t want to make things any more awkward, any more painful. She didn’t want Tonks upset that she wasn’t her brother, or that she couldn’t do things with Mac this week. Because, weird. Well, if she wasn’t. AJ didn’t want to know if she was.
God, this was weird.
She moved into the room to take a seat on the sofa near her soon-to-be Sister-in-Law, and flopped down. “...wish I could just curl up into a ball, but this body’s too big for that.”
Of course she wasn’t. That would just be too strange. Even for them. Tonks was missing Mac dreadfully but she missed her friend too.
“I know exactly what you mean” Tonks agreed on a sigh, “Sometimes I really don’t like this county and it’s randomness”
“Me, either.” AJ sighed. “Thank god it was Mac, though, and not a stranger? I don’t know which would be worse, actually.”
Tonks nodded, "Yeah there are a lot worse people we could have switched with"
It was weird and hard to be sitting there on the sofa with John, but not John. AJ both wanted to stare because she missed him, and not look because it was both awkward and painful. “That’s true. Could be someone who’s going to stuff our faces with greasy food, or drink us half to death, or send us home with strange, sexually transmitted diseases.”
It was almost easier for Tonks because she could almost pretend it was a polyjuice potion or something which AJ had taken. But it did hurt knowing that because of this stupid, stupid county that she’d had to postpone her wedding. That hurt more than she was letting on.
“I think Mac and John would be paying people a visit once everything was normal again had that happened”
“Yeah,” AJ chuckled. “With fists.” She gave Tonks a wink, then folded her arms across her chest once more. “At least I can go back to work. Mac’s strong. I hate to admit it, but he carries far more apples than I do.”
Tonks laughed, “True” she sat back in her seat, “He’s very strong” she agreed, it was just one of the many reasons she loved him - whenever he held her she felt protected from everything. “I’m glad it hasn’t interfered too much. I’m lucky being able to take time off for a while, though I’ve helped out around the orchard a bit”
“That’s good. I mean, I bet it must be harder for John. Though... he’s able to use your power now, right? That you can... change your appearance?” AJ said, giving Tonks a little smirk.
“Yeah” she grinned with only a slight blush, “He’s pretty good with my ability now”
“I noticed.” AJ said, unable to stop the smirk from spreading a bit wider. “I mean, it was nice to get to see him as him for a bit there.” She missed her husband very, very much. But having John use Tonks’ ability to shapeshift was pretty awesome. “Have you been working with his powers?”
Tonks nodded, “I have” she said before concentrating and changing her form to her own remembering to add clothes at the last moment. “His power is a little trickier” she grinned.
AJ jumped a bit when she saw Tonks shifting. “Wow! You can... you guys... two shapeshifters.” She said, shaking her head a little. “Why couldn’t I be a shapeshifter??” No fair.
“It’s interesting for us because our powers are similar but feel and work so differently” Tonks informed her before quickly giving her a one armed hug, “Don’t feel bad AJ”
AJ chuckled a little and leaned into the one-armed hug. “Well, I can cook. That’s a good enough power for me, I suppose.” She said, giving Tonks a grin. “Let me at your kitchen. I’m in the mood for turnovers.”
“Well there you go, that’s far more impressive than changing shape. Even if I shift to look like you it doesn’t give me your cooking skills” she said, somewhat regretfully before smiling brightly, “Turnovers sound perfect” They were the best not-getting-married food, she was sure.
AJ laughed, then climbed up from the sofa to head into the kitchen and cook. Even in this body, cooking came naturally to her. It was easier to not think, to let her body go into auto-pilot. She started to collect materials and whatnot for baking.
Tonks hopped up onto a counter out of AJ’s way, it was kind of strange but kind of normal to watch ‘Mac’ moving around the kitchen. She missed her fiance rather a lot.
“Just move me or give me something to do when you need to” she offered, knowing that AJ knew cooking wasn’t her skill though she had kindly taught Tonks how to make Mac’s favourite - it still wasn’t a natural skill for her though.
AJ grinned, nodding, and finished pulling some things out so that she could start mixing and measuring, making the turnovers from memory. “Not a problem. You can sift the flour.” She said, motioning.
“Now that I can do without destroying the kitchen” Tonks grinned as she set to work, making sure to follow all of AJ’s instructions.
It didn’t take long for them to get the turnovers into the oven. AJ started to wash the measuring spoons and cups, and the bowls and whatever else once the pastries were baking.
Tonks took up drying duty, “Everybody has been really good about the postponement” she said quietly, “And promised they’ll come even if it’s short notice” She hadn’t let on to Mac how upset she’d been and she felt odd telling AJ now but she was still her best friend.
AJ nodded. “Everyone loves the two of you so much. It’s not going to be a problem for the rescheduling. I mean, we all understand, right?” AJ couldn’t imagine having to plan and then re-plan a wedding.
“I know” Tonks nodded, “I just wish this had happened some other time you know? I don’t want it to end up like the Stark wedding” she sighed, “I just wanna be married to Mac”
“I know.” AJ parrotted. “I want you to be married to Mac. I just… it’s just a little stumbling block. Everyone has them. You’ll get your wish, I guarantee it. It just might take a little longer than you expected.”
Tonks nodded, "Yeah you're right, it just feels unfair you know?" she smiled with a shrug, "Its fine I'm just having a whine really"
“I’m here to listen to your whines. We should have some wine with our whines.” She said, then turned to dig around in the fridge for a bottle.
"Now that sounds like a plan" Tonks agreed as she retrieved glasses from the cupboard.
