There was absolutely nothing that was going to get her out of this funk. Loki didn’t seem to miss or care at all. She shouldn’t have been surprised. Darcy was just stuck pining for someone who didn’t care. As usual. That always happened to her. She was at the bar. Again. She was at the bar a lot. She was on her second drink, looking depressed and bored. This sucked.
Roy managed to set up a temporary babysitter for Lian through the agency that one guy on Valarnet had given him, so tonight he’d decided to take advantage of it and go out for an hour or so just to get a quick drink. Roy didn’t go out nearly as often as a guy his age usually did, but that was what happened when you were a single father at twenty five and honestly, he didn’t mind it so much. He loved his daughter more than anything and didn’t mind one bit, not getting to go out all the time. However, when he did get the chance, he jumped at it.
So, tonight, he had gone to a bar close to the house and was leaning on the counter, trying to get the bartenders attention when he noticed the girl who looked as if someone had kicked her puppy. After getting his drink, he approached her, slowly, not wanting her to think he was trying to pick her up or anything, “Having a bad night?”
It wasn’t really a surprise that someone was talking to her. Not because she thought they were trying to pick her up, but just because she looked down in the dumps. Some people ignored. Some people wanted to talk. Darcy shrugged a little. “Bad.. couple of months, I guess is more like it. That’s what people do, right? Drink all their sorrows away.”
“That sucks. I’m sorry.” Roy didn’t sit down, not wanting this girl to think he was a creep or anything. “Do you have a way home if you drink away too many sorrows?” He might have just met her, but he’d hate to see something happen to her because she was unhappy.
“Yeah it sucks. Thanks.” Darcy didn’t think that he was a creep, at least so far. “I’ll just call a taxi, I think.” She wasn’t stupid enough to drink and drive or anything. That would be very bad. That was what taxis were for. “And no taking drinks from strange dudes.” In case he was thinking of offering her a drink.
Good. She was smart. “And if you do, take it directly from the bartender.” Sometimes Roy felt older than he really was, especially when he said things like that, but it was the influence from his time at the police academy. “I’m Roy, by the way.” He still remained standing, not wanting to invite himself to join her for too long if she prefered to drink by herself.
She nodded a little. “Yup, will do.” Though she did think that he had a bit of a dad personality about him, from what she saw. He didn’t look that much older than her though. She could have been wrong. “I’m Darcy. Nice to meet you.” Since she wasn’t telling him to get lost, it was safe to say that he could sit. “Are you named for someone?” she asked randomly.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Darcy.” Roy smiled and took a swig of his drink before finally sitting down on the empty stool beside her, “My dad. I’m a junior.” It was a bit of a random question, but it was also a conversation starter, so Roy didn’t mind it, “I’ve never met anyone else named Darcy before. It’s not a common name, is it?”
Ahh. A Junior. That made a lot of sense. “Why is it always people who kind of have dubious names that are named after someone? No one ever wants to name a kid after someone who has an awesome name.” Not that Roy was awful, but it wasn’t good either. “Darcy is pretty bad. Makes me sound like I’m a blond vapid teenager. But it means Dark One.”
Roy’s brows rose in an amused expression, “Damn. And here I was thinking that Roy was such a badass name.” His lips turned up into a grin then took another swig of his drink, “But in all seriousness, that’s a lot better than what Roy means. You’re going to laugh your ass off when I tell you. If it doesn’t make you laugh then I’ll buy you a drink.” Okay, so maybe that was doing exactly what they’d already talked about her not doing, but Roy didn’t always listen to his own advice all the time.
“All I can think of is Roy Rogers. Sorry.” Darcy had the decency to look slightly sheepish. She didn’t mean to make fun of the guy when she didn’t know him. “Sorry. My mouth gets in trouble.” She pissed a lot of people off. But if he was willing to tell her what it meant, then sure. She gestured for him to go ahead. “Okay.. you’re on. What’s it mean?”
It took a lot to actually offend Roy or something just had to say something about Lian or the way he parented her, but usually it took a lot to offend him, so he didn’t mind Darcy’s reference, “Okay, so Roy is actually Gaelic for red.” He paused, waiting for her response. It was beyond ironic.
Her eyebrows went up at the admission that his name meant red. “Are you fucking kidding me?” She couldn’t help it, she started to laugh. Just a little. “That is.. wow. Your parents were not fucking around, were they? I’m so sorry.”
Roy smirked, happy that he could have made Darcy laugh after she looked so miserable when he’d first approached her, “I kid you not. It honestly means red. And it isn’t as if they weren’t sure what color hair I’d wind up with, cause I had a ton of hair when I was born, so it was red from day one.”
She shook her head in amusement. Poor Roy. “I guess they just looked at you and couldn’t think of anything else you might be but red. Well I guess it could be worse. That’s what they always say, right?” Like he could have been called Stanford and she could have been called Gertrude or something.
“I was lucky though cause not a lot of people seem to know what Roy means, so I wasn’t really teased about it while I was growing up or anything.” He could only imagine the sort of things kids would have come up with back then to tease him. “It is. I could have been Bernard or something.” He smirked and took another swig from his drink.
“Yeah I’m sure they only think of things like Roy Rogers and shit when you mention what your name is.” Darcy wasn’t sure what people thought when they thought of her name. “I think maybe people associate me with Pride and Prejudice. But I’m a chick and not a romantic guy.” Imagine that. “To not having horrible names, but just averagely bad ones.” She raised her glass in salute.
"I'll have you know, I didn't even think about Pride and Prejudice when you told me your name. Mostly because I never read it," That hadn't been one of the books he'd had to read in school. At her toast, Roy raised his nearly empty beer bottle, "To averagely bad names," He smirked and finished his beer off, "I hope someday my daughter won't complain about her name like this."
“I guess that’s my one saving grace. Not a lot of people have read it, at least no one my age.” Darcy wasn’t really surprised. Though she did like the book. Maybe it was just a girl thing, she had no idea. She swallowed a bit more of her beer and settled back. Huh. He didn’t look old enough to have a kid, but she had no room to talk. “What did you name her?”
“Lian.” Roy said, spelling it out since there were multiple ways to actually spell the name, “My...her mother didn’t didn’t really have an opinion either way, so I made the decision.” And there he went, giving a little more information than was necessary, but that was what he did every now and then when it came to Lian or Jade.
“Never heard the name Lian before. And it doesn’t sound awful, which means I think you made a good choice.” Ah mothers. She didn’t quite like her own mother, but she didn’t exactly abandon her. Darcy didn’t seem to mind that he was talking too much information. “I’m sure she won’t get her ass kicked in school, which is the most important.”
Roy laughed and shook his head, “Actually I think she’d be the one doing the ass kicking. She’s pretty tough for an eight year old.” While she was quite girly at times, she could be a real top boy at other times and he was sure that she was going to be able to take care of herself as she got older and would never be the victim of any bullying or anything. At least that’s what he hoped.
“The best women are always the ass kickers.” Darcy could agree to that. She liked kids that didn’t take stuff off of anyone. Like she had been. “Good luck though. Parenting I’ve heard is pretty damn hard.” And she didn’t know a damn thing about it.
Roy smiled and nodded, “It’s been hard at times, but she’s a good kid.” Speaking of parenting, it was probably time for Roy to get back home to Lian, “And speaking of her, I should probably be getting home. I hope things start looking up for you.”
“Oh yeah. Don’t let me keep you. That’s totally more important.” Darcy understood completely. She put out her hand. “It was nice meeting you, Roy. And thanks for the uh.. encouragement.”
Roy smiled once again and shook Darcy’s hair, “It was nice to meet you too. Maybe we’ll see each other again some time.” She seemed like a really nice girl and Roy had been happy to make her smile after she’d looked so down when he’d first approached her, “Have a good night, Darcy.”
