Billy was out at the park, running, slowly rebuilding muscle lost through the crazy events of recent times. He loved to be out and about, helping or just seeing what there was to see. He’d lost his car and bike during the mess, and so he was doing a lot more walking and running, and bus riding. Sadly.
Right now, he had been at the gym, and was just jogging slowly past a park, before he realized he needed a drink, and a rest, and he slowed to a stop near a bench, and settled down for a moment, pulling out his water bottle.
Steve had been out running earlier. With his dreams seeming to be in full swing, he figured it was better just to be prepared and all. One never knew, right? But he’d liked this park, and something about the way nature laid itself out, so he came back a bit later with his sketch pad.
That was where he was, on a bench, sketching away and enjoying the weather, when a runner came up on him. With a half smile at the other guy, Steve scooted down the bench a bit to offer some room on it.
“Thanks!” Billy settled there, and nodded. He was a teen who looked like someone caught between teenhood and adulthood, body long and lean, but not fully settled, and thin. He had a shock of black hair atop his head and whiter than white skin, with glasses sitting atop his nose. Today, he wore a simple t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers combo, all in red, save the jeans which were solid black.
“How are you today?” Billy was polite, because, well, that was how he was, always.
“No worries. Plenty of room on here for two,” Steve said, good naturedly. He returned to his sketching and glanced up with a smile. “Oh, well, I’m all right. Thanks. Can’t complain on a day like this. How are you?”
“I’m doing great! Life is going pretty good!” Even with a stolen car and bike, he was doing good. And the exercise wasn’t killing him, for sure! His dreams seemed to be looping, and he was feeling like he could do almost anything these days.
“Seems like a beautiful day!”
“That it does.” Steve tucked his sketchpad away and held out a hand. “I’m Steve, by the way. Steve Rogers.”
Billy met his hand with his own and shook. "Nice to meet you, sir. I'm Billy Batson. I love running and wandering in the area, just taking it all in."
“Yeah? No kidding. Me too. I actually haven’t ever come running through here until this morning. Guess I liked it so much I had to come back, you know?” Steve laughed.
Billy grinned. “Not a bad place to be. A cafe down the road sells some of the best chocolate milk in all the county, and The muffins at the Baxter Bakery nearby are pretty awesome, too.” He nodded.
“Really? I’ll need to check out that cafe. But I agree, the muffins are pretty great.” Steve leaned back against the bench, hands folded in his lap.
Billy smiled. “It’s a good area. I live down Earhardt, just a little way away.” He had liked this area for some time. And it was only a few miles from where his parents lived. He had compromised with them, and they had let him move out, even at seventeen, since he had a job and all, and was in their eyes able to take care of himself.
So far.
“Sometimes, I just walk it slower, and head to the old classics theater over off of Ninth. I love to watch the older movies, and just spend time there, around work.”
“No way!” Steve brightened up, because, really, he’d never actually met anyone so similar to him before. He turned a bit in his seat to look over at Billy better, so they could have a real conversation. “I love old movies. I know this is gonna sound super cheesy, but they’re re-releasing Wizard of Oz in IMAX and, I mean, it’s not the real thing, but I’m really looking forward to it. The chance to see it on the big screen like that. I think it’s gonna be amazing.”
“They are? That’s cool!” Billy bounced, ever so slightly. He loved the old classics. “I spend a lot of time watching like, the old movie serials, especially the superhero and detective ones like the Shadow.” He nodded. “The Wizard of Oz in IMAX ought to be awesome!” This was cooool!
“Yeah, this might sound a bit hokey, but I love the old musicals. Hollywood’s golden era and everything. Back when stories were simple and actors got by on their talent alone and not cause of movie magic.” Steve shrugged. He had nothing against modern movies. He knew enough people involved in them to know everyone was still massively talented, but there was just some charm about the old ones.
Billy made a denying motion. “PShaw! Hokey? Music lives forever. Musicals are fun! They show a lot of awesome things.”: He grinned. That was definitely true. “One of my favorites is Music Man.”
“Yes!” Steve agreed enthusiastically. He laughed. “And Singin’ In The Rain. It’s impossible for me not to love that one. It’s just a good feel-good sort of film.”
“That’s a good one! And faithful versions of Hello, Dolly, too.” Billy grinned wider, and chuckled. Well, that was cool.
“There are a lot of them like that. It’s nice to just let the worries go away for awhile. Oh! Over There!, that’s a good one!”
“Oh, that is a good one.” Steve just smiled brightly. “See, that’s it, isn’t it? Movies that let you just. Forget about things. A simpler time and everything. It’s just really charming.”
Billy nodded, and smiled to the other man, enjoying chatting with someone who got it. “And it inspires us to be more like that here and now. To just be our best.”
“It really does.” And lately Steve was coming to appreciate more and more the ideals of decades ago. He flashed Billy a smile and shrugged a bit. “But I should probably get going. I’m interrupting your run and all.”
Billy smiled as he rose. “Okay. I should head out, yeah. Maybe we can talk again, sometime. I hope your day goes well!”
He stretched as he got ready to start.
“I’d like that. Enjoy the rest of your run,” Steve told him brightly, packing up his sketchbook and pencils.
