Remy had gotten Jubilee and Laura’s address from Logan. He strode up to their doorstep with a wrapped box in his hand - he hadn’t gotten them anything for their wedding, after all, and he’d never met Laura. Maybe he’d be lucky and get to do both, but at the very least, he could give them the little present he’d gotten them. It felt like he ought to. Especially since he’d just been hitched himself. He knocked on the door, hoping one or both of them were home.
Jubilee bounced to the door, and opened it. “Hey cajunman!” She gave him a hug and then dragged him in with all the enthusiasm of a golden retriever. She grinned. “Laura’s takin’ Ginger out for a walk, she should be back soon. How you doin’ homie?”
Remy had gotten used to that craziness; it was kind of endearing, honestly. “I can’t complain, Miz Jubilee. Came by with a little present for you two. Since I ain’t get to your wedding or anything.” He smiled.
“Well it was a small thingie but I appreciate it, you want something to drink? Eat? Candy? Cake? We got cake, lots of cake, I missed cake so much you had no idea.”
Remy laughed. “Ain’t nobody who don’t like it. Me and Candy’s tryin’ to get a king cake for our little reception party.” King cake was a New Orleans tradition for celebrations. “You two should come.”
“I’d love to!” They’d kind of embraced whatever part of normal they could. She set the box on the table so she and Laura could open it together. She bounced to the fridge and threw Remy a beer.
Remy caught it in one fluid motion, cracking the top with his ring. “Merci; probably shouldn’t be poppin ‘em with the weddin’ ring, but still.” He chuckled. “How’s tricks lately?”
“Hey if the ring isn’t strong enough, then what’s the point.” Jubilee grinned at her friend, and waggled her own ring finger before popping her own beer.
“Candy might disagree.” Remy chuckled. “You look real happy, though. I’s glad to see it.”
“What we won’t tell her she won’t know an’ won’t hurt you over,” Jubilee replied, knowingly.
“Smart girl.” Remy winked. “She ain’t gonna kill me or whatever, just grump. She’s cute when she grumps. But things is goin’ good? You had any more dreams?”
“Nothin’ new. Just the same old same old.” Jubilee shrugged a shoulder. “Really just happy I’ve got my powers and shiz an’ I don’t have to drink blood!”
“Always a good thing, p’tite.” Remy sat down with his beer. “Things been real relaxed lately for ol’Remy, and I just happy for that.” Of course, that meant that he was probably jinxing everything, but oh, well. He was tired of watching what he said, dammit.
“Tell me about it! So when are you going to have little cajuns running around?”
Remy blushed, laughing. “Oh, probably not for a little while. Candy gotta finish her degree first. Hard to be doin’ work when you thinkin’ about whether you gonna spend all night bent over the toilet.” He had to be curious. “You two thinkin’ that way ever, or you gonna stick with puppies?”
“Uh.” Jubilee blinked at him, a surprised expression on her face.
Laura put the groceries down as she stepped into the apartment. “We’re sticking with puppies.” She assured him.
Remy laughed at the reply coming from the woman next to Jubilee. “You must be Laura. Enchanté, I’m Remy.” He’d seen her in passing on missions, but they’d never stopped to say hello. “I just came by to look in, and give you two a present I saw that reminded me of you.”
Laura nodded. “Gambit, yes, I recognized your smell.” She smiled at him. “That’s very thoughtful of you, thanks.” She offered him her hand to shake.
Jubilee grinned at them, folding her arms and leaning against the table. She reached down to give Ginger a pet when he wandered over. “You know how creepy that sounds, hon?”
“S’okay. Used to it from Logan.” Remy grinned. “My wife likes to joke that he gonna steal me away from her. We dream about same stuff.” He knew these two dreamt; he didn’t have to hide.
“I thought being honest would be best.” Laura said, a little embarrassed that she’d been creepy. “I don’t think Logan likes men.”
“Oh my god could you imagine?” Jubilee made a little heat symbol with her fingers. “He’d be the hottest gay man ever.”
Remy had to laugh, and laugh hard. “It’s just a joke, but now you gotta meet Candy, cause she’d love you for sayin’ that.” Candy and Jubes would be all manner of trouble, but the fun kind.
“Your wife is named Candy?” Laura asked with a giggle. “Is she sweet?”
“Does she taste like candy?” She waggled her eyebrows. “What kinda candy?”
“She is named Candy, oui, but what she taste like’s none of your damn business.” Remy retorted amiably.
Laura laughed and beamed at Remy. “Do you want to stay for lunch?”
“Can we open the package now? I’ve always wanted to open Gambit’s package,” Jubilee whined, picking up the present.
“Aw, Miz Jubilee, I ain’t know you felt that way.” Remy grinned lazily, but was more polite to Laura. “That’d be really nice. Thanks.” The present was a set of rings for couples; he figured if they didn’t want to wear them, they could put them on chains or something.
Laura laughed and motioned for Jubilee to tear into it. “I get in trouble around strange men’s packages. You open it.”
Rolling her eyes Jubilee opened the box, and then pulled out the rings. She stared, opened mouth and then pressed her hand to her chest. Jubilee was speechless and verklempt.
Remy smiled. “Ain’t nothing big, just, they match. The way she talks about you, Miz Laura, you two match, too.”
Laura hugged Remy, too surprised and happy for words. They were very pretty, and she was touched that he’d thought of them that way.
Jubilee took one and slipped it onto Laura’s fingers. “We’ll have to...hafta get like a chain or something so your claws don’t push it off and shiz...”
That was news to Remy. “Claws?” He blinked, laughing. “Didn’t know you was that much like Logan. I hope it don’t mess with you too bad.” He meant it - the idea of having claws was just flat out weird, and he would worry if it was him.
Laura nodded, pulling back from him. “Yes. I have two claws instead of three, and one on each foot.” She rubbed her forearm, not really wanting to talk about her claws. The ring looked really nice. She wished she could wear it, but she would hate to see it damaged. “I’ll put it on the chain with our wedding ring.”
“Yeah...” Jubilee wished Laura could wear it on her finger like she did when she wasn’t doing gymnastics. “Thank you, Remy.” She looked at the man, serious for once in her life.
“You’s welcome.” He smiled. “I ain’t dream about you two much, but I did a little, and I dun’ know, I try to keep all those people close. I fuck up a lot in my dreams.” He was thinking mostly of Marrow, but he’d screwed everybody indirectly by working for Sinister.
“We all mess things up in the dreams. We have to try to be less stupid here.” She opened the chain that held her wedding band and threaded the ring from Remy onto it. “But luckily things suck less here, so the mistakes aren’t as bad.”
“You were there for Laura, even if you didn’t remember it,” Jubilee said, grinning. She’d never been told what all those two had gotten up to before she and Logan and popped in unannounced in Paris, but she knew he’d done a lot for her wife.
“Oh yeah?” It intrigued him that she remembered things he didn’t.
Jubilee nodded. “After all the crap with Hope coming back an’ stuff, Laura took off. You went after her. Me an’ Wolvie found you guys in Paris, an’ that’s where me an’ Laura hanged an’ shiz. Where I tasted her blood. An’ there was this trigger scent thing where some baddies tried to use it to turn a bunch of normal people into killers or somethin’.”
He didn’t remember any Hope, but maybe he would. “C’est fou, that. Loony.” Remy shook his head. “Still, glad to hear I was a help ‘stead of a hindrance.”
Laura didn’t remember all that, either. “That sounds pretty much like the way the things go in the dreams.”
“You did good Cajun, don’t worry about it.” Jubilee hugged her arms around herself. Part of her worried about what would happen when Laura did remember. If she ever remembered at all.
“That’s all that matters. I dream a lot about doin’ bad. Sinister and all that.” Remy shook his head. He didn’t feel guilty per se, but he felt responsible. At least responsible enough to prove his bona fides in this life. He wanted to be a person that could be trusted. Well, at least by his people. He got the impression he wouldn’t be Gambit if everyone could trust him.
Laura made a face. “We’ve all done bad in the dreams, and there’s no Sinister here.”
“Can we not say his name, it’s like the Dark Lord yo, it’ll make him appear!”
“I ain’t sure you wrong.” Remy made a face. “But I dunno, i just wanted to stop by and give those to you all. We had our problems, all of us, but things is shapin’ up tout bien.” At least for now, but he didn’t want to say that out loud, either.
“Thank you. It was really sweet.” Laura smiled brightly.
“I love it.” Jubilee hugged him, then stepped back and took Laura’s hand. “Everything has been just so awesome.” Hell, maybe they’d figure out a way to start a family someday.
Remy grinned. He liked Jubilee, even if he’d never gotten together with her the way she hinted at. “Damn glad to hear it, girl.” He rose, finishing off the last of his beer. “You need anything, you get a hold of ol’ Remy. You hear?”
“We will.” Laura said with a laugh. “Thank you for coming by, it was nice to meet you.”
“You’re the best, G-man.” Jubilee punched him lightly in the shoulder. “Welcome anytime, you an’ your candy-coated wife!”
Hell with that, he hugged Jubilee, and offered a hand to Laura, since he didn’t know her as well. “I gonna send you two the invite when we have our post-wedding party, hein? If you can’t come, c’est okay, but I gonna offer, dammit.”
“Oh, we’ll be there.” Laura promised with a laugh.
