Cersei was unable to sleep. She often found it hard to sleep without a little wine in her, so she was up early, a glass in hand and sitting on the couch in the den, willing her body to let her go back to sleep.
Then again, if she slept she might dream, and as much as being a Queen was appealing, the rest of that world was so barbaric she wanted nothing to do with it.
She got up, and headed up the stairs to check on her children.
Myrcella slowly roused to wakefulness, instinctively not moving much so as not to disturb the sleeping Jeremy. They were still wrapped around each other and she was glad he'd been able to eventually get some rest. She had tried to remain awake but that had obviously failed. Now as she looked at him her heart ached once more for what he'd been through and at the pain he was experiencing. It was early and she wasn't thinking there was any imminent danger of being discovered.
As Myrcella woke, Jeremy remained asleep. He hadn’t slept since Saturday night, before his parents had been murdered and here it was early Wednesday morning, which made it two nights since he’d actually slept and while he’d been afraid to fall asleep for fear of seeing his parents the way he’d found them, he’d been so exhausted, both physically and mentally that he’d fallen into a deep, dreamless sleep the moment his eyes had closed.
She checked on Tommen first, and then Joffrey. Myrcella’s room was farthest down the hall and she peered in at the lump of blanket on the bed.
When her bedroom door opened Myrcella looked over. Bugger. She put her finger to her lips before whispering loud enough for her mum to hear, "I can explain everything mum, just trust me okay?" she requested.
Cersei’s eyes narrowed. She hadn’t noticed anything until Myrcella had said something, and then she realized there was someone else in her daughter’s bed and she had to resist the urge to rush in and start whacking with the nearest lamp. She whispered, harshly, “Downstairs. Now.”
Then she swirled around and was gone.
Crap. She sighed a little before slowly moving, trying not to wake Jeremy. She didn't want to leave him on his own but she also wanted to protect him from her mum, at least until she had been able to explain why he'd been in her room.
This time, as Myrcella moved, the dipping of the mattress finally roused him and Jeremy’s eyes fluttered open, still red and bloodshot from the night before, “Wha...” He’d almost forgotten that he’d gone over Myrcella’s and groaned slightly as he moved, spotting her before she left the room, “What time is it?” His voice was gravelly and hoarse from sleep.
Myrcella turned at the sound of Jeremy's voice and moved back to sit on the edge of the bed, "It's still early" she told him softly, glancing at the clock, "Six thirty. I've got to go speak to mum, she came in to check on me so..." she shrugged, "But once I've explained I'll come back up" she added with a kind smile.
Jeremy hadn't thought that Myrcella was going anywhere but maybe to the bathroom or something, but as soon as she mentioned her mother, Jeremy was off the bed and standing beside her, "Shit. I should go. I probably just got you in trouble or something." While he had slept, he still looked awful.
“Hey” Myrcella said taking his hand, “It’s okay. You don’t need to go anywhere. I just need to talk to her and then we can go from there” she assured him, “Wait here, okay? I won’t be too long” at least she hoped anyway.
Cersei was pacing downstairs, her wine glass refilled three times while she waited, as she tried to keep her calm. Myrcella was usually a pretty level headed girl but she of all people knew what hormones could do to a person.
Myrcella entered the room where her mother was, seeing the glass of wine she sighed softly, “Mum” she said, “Please don’t work yourself up, I promise you nothing happened”
Jeremy stayed up in Myrcella's room for a few minutes after she left, checking his phone to see a number of texts from Elena as well as a few from Stiles. He would reply to Stiles later, but for now, he put his phone back in his pocket and got up, deciding that it probably was better for him to leave. He didn't want to go back to Katherine's, but he also didn't want to get Myrcella in anymore trouble. Going downstairs, he found Myrcella and her mother in the living room, "Um...I'm just gonna go. I'm really sorry about this." Despite the sleep he'd gotten, Jeremy still looked and felt like he'd been hit by a bus.
“Sit,” Cersei said to her daughter. “You’re going to tell me why there’s a boy in your room late at night, and you’re going to tell the truth.”
She didn’t even look at Jeremy when he came down, and instead pointed at a different chair from the one she’d ordered Myrcella to sit in. There would be no hanky panky on her watch.
Myrcella sat, recognising her mums no nonsense tone. When Jeremy came in she went to stand up but immediately sat down at Cersei's look. Throwing Jeremy an apologetic look she took a deep breath and looked at her mum, "Jeremy needed a friend" she said softly, "Nothing happened I promise. I made him stay, he hadn't slept and I didn't want him to drive anywhere" she still didn't truth be told she was worried.
Cersei turned to look at Jeremy, expectently.
Jeremy entered the room and took the seat that Myrcella's mother had pointed out then ran a hand through his hair. The last thing he really wanted to do was talk about how his parents had been murdered and least of all with someone else's mother, considering he's just lost his own, but otherwise Myrcella was going to be in trouble. "My...my parents died. Were murdered. Sunday night." He bit his bottom lip and stared down at the floor as his eyes welled up with tears once again, but this time he blinked them away, not wanting anyone to see them this time.
Myrcella did get up from her seat then, to move to one closer to Jeremy and took one of his hands in hers, “Jeremy found them” she told her mum quietly, “So I took him to my room, we talked and then I convinced him to lay down because he needed to rest” she held her mothers gaze with her own, prepared to protect Jeremy if she needed to. He’d been through enough already.
Cersei blinked. Well, that was a good one. Perhaps the best one she'd ever heard. "I'm sorry...That's a terrible thing to have to go through." She looked at both children, eyebrows raised, then took a seat across from Jeremy. "Have you talked to the police?" Because for all she knew she was harboring a potential suspect in a double murder. Tywin would have a cow.
When Myrcella took his hand, he glanced over at her, giving her a small smile then looked up at Myrcella's mother and nodded, "Sunday. They said it was likely a break-in." And that meant that it was very unlikely they'd ever find out who did it. "They said my parents...they probably surprised the robbers when they came downstairs." He chewed his bottom lip and closed his eyes to ward off more tears.
Myrcella had frowned slightly at her mother when she’d questioned him but soon re-focused on Jeremy. She squeezed his hand in reassurance and placed her other one over their joined ones, “We’ll get you through this” she told him gently, “You aren’t alone” Tears were in her own eyes but she was determined to stay strong for him and not let them fall.
Cersei felt immediate relief. She’d check herself, of course, but that was something they didn’t need to worry about. She exhaled softly, then got to her feet. “Would you like some breakfast? We should eat.” She still hadn’t liked finding him in her daughter’s bed, but she’d deal with Myrcella later. She took a gulp of her wine, and added, “I’m not going to kick you out after something like that.”
Jeremy hadn't expected Myrcella's mother to offer him breakfast, but he nodded, because a long with not sleeping, Jeremy couldn't remember the last time he'd actually eaten, "Uh, yeah. Thanks." He glanced over at Myrcella then got to his feet. He knew he'd have to reply to Elena's texts, or at least Stiles', at some point, but that could wait till later.
Myrcella smiled encouragingly at Jeremy as she too got to her feet. She knew her mum would probably have a few more words with her later but right now she was happy that Jeremy was staying and that he was going to eat something. It would ease her worry, at least a little.
