Alice needed Red Bull. Of course, John Connor had told her not to try and stay awake too long. It only made the dreams more intense when they did happen... but she didn’t really believe him. She didn’t want to believe him. How could she? The dreams were already so real, so vivid. She couldn’t believe they could possibly get any worse.
So... Red Bull. She was going to stay awake all night and all day if it killed her. She had to stop thinking about Jasper that way. Alice was standing in front of the energy drinks, trying to figure out which were cheapest per ounce, and how much she could drink before her heart exploded.
Atton already had that equation down pat, and he smiled at the pretty young girl in front of the energy drinks. “Can I snag a couple of the 8 Hour Energies?” He pointed at the little two pack near her hands. “Taste like battery acid, work... probably like battery acid, actually.”
"Oh, yeah. Totally." Alice took a step back and out of the way. "Eight hour energy, huh? And they work? I tried NoDoze, but it just made me jittery, then I crashed hard." She confessed to the handsome man who'd spoken to her.
“NoDoze actually puts me to sleep. I’m that immune to caffeine at this point. And to answer your question, it kind of works? It’s a B vitamin hypersupplement. It’s not even a hundred percent of your RDA, it’s like, a few thousand.” Atton wrinkled his nose. “You have like, a weird hot flash, then you can’t sleep.”
“That’s good.” Alice nodded. Funny, that she was saying it was good about hot flashes and not being able to sleep, but that’s where she was at the moment. “That’s exactly what I’m going for. I need to not sleep.” She reached forward for a pack of her own.
“Not sleeping is pretty awesome. Fewer dreams that way.” He grabbed a Monster for good measure, offering her one. “I’ve become sort of a connoisseur, lately.”
“Yeah, definitely.” She gave him a thanks and accepted the drink. It was nice to talk to someone who didn’t think she was crazy about all of this. “...you’re avoiding your dreams, too?”
“Of course. I’m the bad guy who gets redeemed by true love, how cliche is that?” Atton rolled his eyes. “I hate it.”
Alice chuckled softly. “That sounds vaguely familiar.” She said, shaking her head a bit. She put the energy drink into her little basket, along with the 8 Hour Energy things, too. “I’m a vampire who goes “vegetarian.”” She said, using air quotes around the word.
“Oh, that sounds ... interesting.” Atton laughed. “So what, a hundred percent animal, nothing human?”
“Yeah! Not exactly vegetarian, but... thanks for not completely making fun of my bizarre dreams.” Alice said, giving him something of a smile. His laugh was a bit infectious. “...I know they’re insane. And we’re not vulnerable to sunlight... we just... sparkle.”
Atton blinked. “That’s got to be ... really hard to talk off, in a practical sense.” He smiled and felt more than a bit fraternally protective of the kid.
Alice chuckled. “You have no idea. I woke up and felt... I have no idea.” She shook her head a bit. “Ridiculous. Like... it’s ridiculous. I’m dreaming of being a sparkling vegetarian vampire. Oh, and I have visions of the future.” It was Mary Sue, wasn’t it?
“I dream of being in a sci-fi world. Spaceships and lightsabers.” He chuckled a little. “Yeah, I know how that sounds.” Speaking of sounds, he felt kind of funny.
“What’s a light saber?” Alice asked. But then she stopped and looked around in the aisle of the supermarket. Something strange was happening. Was about to happen. She knew it, she just couldn’t see it.
“Oh, good, you don’t know.” He blinked when he felt a weird feeling in his head, not a headache but almost - something wrong in the Force. He whimpered and reached out for the counter for stability.
Alice felt dizzy. As if she was about to have a vision, like from her dreams? Only … different. Then she was falling back against the shelves a little, her light frame bumping into some energy drinks and knocking them over.
When she opened her eyes, she was looking at herself.
Atton blinked when he looked at his own body. “I - oh, what the hell.” He hated this place, he really did.
Alice looked down at herself. Then she looked at the body she was in... and it wasn’t her own. “...wait, this is...” And her voice was different. She lifted a hand to her throat. “Oh, no. Crap, I’m you!”
“Yeah, I’m not really excited about being so short,” he sighed. “Oh, fuck, does this mean you’ve got my powers?” Atton’s eyes went wide. “I mean. That sounds nuts, but ... yeah. You might uh. Hear other people’s thoughts. Try not to focus on it, it’ll go away.”
Alice blinked at him. “Your powers??” She asked. Of course, she had powers in the Dreams, too. Some that were bleeding through. He’d find out soon enough; strength, agility, pale skin... she hoped that he wouldn’t have any visions of the future while in her body, but she couldn’t make any promises.
“Wait, what powers?”
Atton winced a little. “Uh, telepathy, telekenesis. Those’re the ones you’d have to worry about.” He didn’t think she’d decide to much about with a sword.
She blinked at him. “Oh, only telepathy and telekenesis. You’re just a superhero. No big.” Her voice was playfully incredulous. She lifted his hands--his big, strong hands--and stared at them. “...still, I think I could take you in an arm wrestling match. Vampire strength and all.”
“Jedi,” he mumbled. Well, at least he wasn’t in a woman with huge, enormous boobs or something. This girl was model slender and slightly built, so he figured he could live with it.
“Jed-what?” Alice shook her head. Atton’s head. He was tall. “...Well, in any case... I suppose... crap. I should finish shopping. Do you think I’m going to Dream as you? Maybe I’ll forego the 8 Hour Energy stuff and... oh, you should take your phone and wallet back.” She added, digging her hands into his pockets.
“Likewise.” He handed over the purse she’d been holding, looking up at her. The looking up thing would take getting used to.
They exchanged things, and Alice nodded. She figured she’d have to finish shopping when she was... back to normal. For some reason, she had a feeling she could sleep in this body without worrying about the dreams. She didn’t feel as tired. “Well, I’ll be in touch, I guess.” She said. She should get home to explain this all to Esme.
He nodded. “Here, let me give you my number, in case things happen or in case something happens. My fiance will kind of understand why I’m giving a girl my number this time.”
Alice gave a little laugh. It sounded weird coming out of her in his voice. But she nodded, and handed over her phone. “You might get a midnight call if I start hearing people’s thoughts or making things move with the power of my mind,” she said, only partially teasing.
“I completely understand.” That had been why he’d wanted to put his number in her phone anyway; he didn’t know if the Force would still be strong due to his body, or if it was more a body/spirit combo deal.
Alice had no idea. The strength, agility and super speed were probably attached to her body, not her... mind? She wasn’t really thinking about that. She was trying to figure out what she was going to do until all of this settled down. She’d have to text her mother. Her father probably had clothes she could wear, or Emmett may have left something behind.
“Thanks.” She said, accepting the phone back once he was done. She sent him a text with her name, so he’d have her number too. “So. I guess I’ll be seeing you, then.”
“Hopefully. Even if we end up getting our bodies back soon, we should get lunch sometime or something.” He smiled, remarkably chivalrous for himself. He got a big brother feeling around Alice. “I promise my fiance and I won’t get up to any hanky panky in your body, too.”
Alice broke into a smile. She nodded. “All right. Lunch.” She liked the sound of that. It would be nice to have someone else to talk to--someone who understood the dreams, and was separated from her family and friends. “I’ll hold you to that.”
And then she went very pink. “Oh, um... right.” She laughed softly. “Even if you did, I wouldn’t know.” Then she gave an awkward wave and headed off down the aisle to go home.
