Really, it was just a usual day for Deryn -- she was working. And working at the Farmer’s Market for her really just consisted of her bouncing around from table to table talking to people and making sure everything was going well. Sometimes she stopped to talk to customers, sometimes she just hummed happily and hugged her clipboard looking for things to do.
Basically it was the best job for someone so social.
Ever since he and Sirius had come to the official realization that they were in fact dating again, Remus had been spending more time at Sirius’ house than at his own apartment. Of course he didn’t stay at Sirius’ all the time, but he had begun to leave things at Sirius’; a few books, some extra clothes, even a toothbrush. It was almost like when they’d moved in together when they were younger except that Sirius’ house was quite a bit bigger than that apartment had been. Of course Remus didn’t mind going back and forth between his apartment and Sirius’ house, because he knew that Sirius needed his own space now and then, just as he did. It worked out well this way.
However, lately Remus had been spending more nights at Sirius’ ever since they’d both dreamt about James and Lily’s deaths and Sirius being arrested for Peter’s murder. The dreams had shaken them both and having the other close had helped them to get through it.
On the nights that Remus stayed over, he tended to cook dinner and since he was planning on staying over tonight, he had decided to stop by the farmer’s market to pick up some fresh vegetables to go with dinner.
Deryn was chatting it up with the people at a booth that advertised a lot of fresh vegetables -- carrots, potatoes, tomatoes (okay those were really fruit, but that wasn’t the point!). The zucchini and yellow squash was looking particularly nice today. Leaning against the table, she smiled at every single person passing by.
As he moved from booth to booth, Remus eventually came to the one where Deryn was speaking to a few other people. He began looking through the various vegetables at the booth. “Excuse me, how fresh are the yellow squash?” He asked, figuring that someone there would be able to give him the answer. He wasn’t entirely sure which of them were in charge of the booth, but at least one of them had to be.
She wasn’t, but that didn’t mean she didn’t know the answers anyway. Deryn was bright and sunshine and smiles and no one at the booths tended to mind her answering questions since she was so remarkably personable. “Picked fresh daily. You can’t get much fresher than that! They’re good too, you know. Awesome in stir fry.”
Stir fry. Remus hadn’t actually thought about what he was going to make, but that sounded really good now that he thought about it. It was quick and if he added steak or chicken Sirius probably wouldn’t complain too much about the vegetables, “That actually sounds like an excellent idea. What else would you recommend for stir fry?” Remus knew that you could put a number of different things into it.
Deryn lit up, like she was just that happy to please. And really, she was. “Broccoli. Carrots if you like. Water chestnuts, mushrooms.” A pause. “Basically anything you like that won’t clash with all the other flavors.”
Those were all really good suggestions and Remus was close to buying them all just to have the option. Plus, it would do Sirius some good to have some vegetables in his fridge for another time. “Those all sound excellent. Especially the mushrooms and water chestnuts. Which do you think would go better with them, chicken or steak?”
Deryn hmmmed and haaaed a little in thought and then shrugged. “Either. But I guess steak is better with the mushrooms. Get portobello -- there’s a booth about three tables down? They’re really good there.” Deryn knew where all the best everything was being sold here. It was her job.
It was obvious that this girl knew a lot about the Farmer’s Market and it’s wares, which was very helpful, “Portobello happen to be a favorite of mine.” He glanced towards where she said they were then back at her, “I take it you work here, considering you know an awful lot about the Market. Either that or you simply frequent it often.”
She laughed at that -- a bright sort of giggle that was a little like chimes in the wind. “Yes,” she agreed, brightly, and then cocked her head to the side a little. “I’m a coordinator. I don’t have my own booth, I just help out.”
So that was how she knew where everything was, “Well, I must say you’re doing a very good job of coordinating. This is my first time here and you’ve been very helpful since you’re so knowledgeable about everything. I’m Remus Lupin.” He wasn’t sure why, but he felt like introducing himself was the right thing to do.
She beamed at that, taking the complement and covering herself with it like a blanket of warmth. “Thank you,” she said, sounding both sweet and proud. “I try. Nice to meet you, Remus. I’m Deryn Hershel.” She hugged her clipboard and then gave a nodding type gesture with her head. “C’mon, I’ll show you where the mushrooms are.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Deryn,” Remus might not have made friends easily, but he was always nothing, if not cordial. “Thank you very much. I appreciate it. How long have you been the coordinator here?” He asked as they walked towards the booth that sold the mushrooms.
“Oh gosh,” she said, looking thoughtful and blank all at the same time -- there was a skip to her step and the girl almost needed it she was so short. Barely five feet tall and just a tiny slip of a thing. “I dunno. A few years now...”
“And you enjoy working here?” It really was obvious by how invested Deryn appeared to be in the Farmer’s Market, but Remus liked hearing people talk about their jobs when they actually enjoyed them. Too many people complained about their jobs these days that it was rare to find someone who actually liked what they did. He was also one of those rare people. He loved teaching and couldn’t think of a single thing that he’d rather be doing.
Deryn just liked everything. She found a reason to be cheerful nearly every day, and very rarely got sad or complained. “Oh, yes,” she said. “It’s really fun and everyone super nice. But you don’t have to wander far to find something to eat for lunch.” She grinned and then bounced the last couple feet to the booth where mushrooms could be found.
“What is it you do?”
“It seems like a nice place to work,” Remus had only been there for a little while, but so far everyone had been very friendly and helpful, especially Deryn, “I’m a school teacher. I teach high school history.” He was still thinking about making a move to college level teacher, he was already qualified, but he had been teaching high school for so long that he was used to it; not that he had a problem with change, but would high schooler and college age were very different types of students.
“Oooh,” said Deryn, who would probably be the first to admit she hadn’t loved History in school -- there’d been too many dates to remember and she was a little too ADD to remember all those sorts of things. But still. “Sounds like fun, do you like it? Here, these portobello mushrooms look best.” See? ADD.
Remus nodded in response to her question, “I do. I’ve always enjoyed learning as much as I could, so it wasn’t difficult to decide what I wanted to do after school.” Remus glanced at the mushrooms Deryn pointed out and chose a few of them, “How did you end up in this particular job?” He asked her as he looked over the other items at the booth.
Deryn handed over a few bills to the shop owner and selected a plum from the buschel sitting there. She ate a lot of fruits and vegetables while she was here, and it was pretty much her favorite thing ever. Probably no one would have made her pay (or overpay, as it were), but she insisted every time.
“Oh, you know.” she said, a little absently. “I applied, and they liked me?” How did anyone end up with any job that you didn’t need to be properly qualified for?
Remus nodded as he listened, “I don’t see a reason why anyone wouldn’t like you.” In a way, she reminded him of Tonks a little, with how upbeat she was. As he thought about Tonks, he couldn’t help but smile a little. As far as Tonks knew, him and Sirius hadn’t spoken since she’d tricked them into talking to one another and she thought he was looking for dates on dating sites when in actuality, they’d been back together for a few months now and here he was, buying vegetables to make dinner for Sirius.
“I really don’t either!” Deryn grinned, and wiggled her eyebrows playfully. Fancy that, her and Tonks were actually friends, and got on well. Probably because they were so similar.
“Anyway! I’ve gotta go make sure everyone is happy and set on things! Good luck with your stir fry!”
