Deryn was staring at every flavor of ice cream in front of her like possibly this - this was the most important decision she’d ever make in her life. She had to get it right.
“There are so many that look good,” she bemoaned, and yet still managed to sound cheerful. It was kind of impressive. She glanced over at Tonks and smiled. “What do you think?”
Tonks loved how happy Deryn was all the time, Tonks herself wasn’t exactly a miserable sort but her energy could dip sometimes. Deryn was a breath of fresh air and a generally lovely person to be around.
“I’m eyeing up the peanut butter and the cherry” she said, “But then my eye keeps being drawn to the mint and the chocolate fudge. You’re right there are too many that look tempting.”
Peanut butter and cherry might end up tasting like a PB&J sandwich, and that certainly did have some appeal. She pursed her lips thoughtfully and considered the both of those. “I think the mint chocolate would be better. Like girl scout cookies.”
"Mint chocolate is awesome" Tonks nodded, "And I have overloaded on peanut butter this week. I swear if I didn't know better it'd be like I'm having cravings" she grinned.
Deryn gasped, hand over her mouth and eyes wide as dishes. Plates? Something like that. “Are you--?”
"No" Tonks rushed to say, "No, no, definitely not. I mean I will be at some point but Mac and I are going to enjoy just being the two of us for a while"
“Ohhhh,” Deryn let out a little breath and then gave an understanding nod. She liked kids, but found it difficult to imagine her friends having them. It was weird.
She shrugged, and then ordered her ice cream and paid for the both of them. “Yeah, you should definitely enjoy it for a while.”
“Oh yeah, I’m definitely not ready to share him yet. He’s all mine for a while” she grinned brightly. “Speaking of, how are you and Sam doing?” she asked, making a note to get the bill the next time they were out.
If it was possible, Deryn only perked up more at the mention of Sam Winchester. She was honestly just stupidly in love with the guy. “Awesome.” she said, sounding a little dreamy as her ice cream was handed over. “He’s been having some family issues, but he’s trying. And he bought me a ring.”
Tonks grinned, it was so nice to see Deryn so happily in love. “A ring or a ring ring?” she asked teasing, she knew of course as she had gone with Sam to help him pick it but that didn’t stop her wanting to tease her friend just a little.
“Isn’t that the same thing?” Deryn teased right back and then showed off the ring -- which Tonks had clearly seen before since she’d been there helping, but Deryn didn’t know that. “It’s just a - you know. I like you ring. Which works, right?” She looked a little concerned for a moment. “AJ keeps telling me I should get married.”
Laughing Tonks grinned, “You’d think so, just a couple of subtle differences” she said before looking at the ring. It did suit Deryn very well, it looked beautiful. “It’s absolutely perfect for you” she told her friend. “Now don’t you listen to AJ she just wants everybody to get married, you and Sam will know when it’s right for you. Don’t you worry, what matters most is that you are both happy” she wrapped an arm around Deryn’s shoulders for a quick one armed hug.
Deryn let out a laugh at that, genuinely pleased at Tonks’ words, and returned the hug with enthusiasm. Then again, she did everything with enthusiasm.
“You’re right,” she agreed, with a nod. “Someday. But for now this ring is perfect. I’m not in any rush, you know?” Deryn wasn’t against change, but she also didn’t care to force it to happen for no discernable reason. Basically, she was easy.
“And why should you be? Enjoy the dating for a while, it’s fun. It should be” she smiled, “And your ring is perfect” she nodded in agreement. While she understood AJ’s enthusiasm at the end of the day Sam and Deryn could decide for themselves when was good for them.
That’s what Deryn kept saying. But AJ was possibly crazy. Possibly a bit rabid. Maybe.
Deryn smiled and gave a nod, only furthered since she bounced on her heels as she did so. “I am. I do. It is fun.” a pause. “So what’s new with you?”
“Mac and I have all of the wedding prep done and dusted” Tonks told her, “We’re rather pleased with ourselves for that one. So yeah mostly if we’re not working we’ve been sorting the wedding. We’re one track mind people at the moment”
“Not so one track where you didn’t have time to get ice cream,” Deryn pointed out with a grin as they weaved their way over to some tables to find a proper seat. Hovering only lasted so long before someone else got annoyed.
“But I’m sure it’ll be really nice.”
“I figured I deserved a reward and I wanted to see you too” Tonks told her friend, as they sat down. “I hope so. If everything goes to plan it’ll be how me and Mac want it which is the most important thing at the end of the day” It had taken her a while to accept that but now she was fully embracing it.
Well, at the end of the day, that only made sense, didn’t it? It was their day, after all, and they should be the ones to enjoy it the most. At least, that was what Deryn thought about it. She licked at her ice cream, looking half dreamy and pleased and then smiled. “I agree. I think it’ll be lovely.” Plus she liked a good reason to wear a really cute dress.
“Thanks” Tonks replied with a grin as she licked her own ice cream, “I think everybody will get a kick out of our theme”
“What’s the theme?” Deryn rose her eyebrows curiously.
“Country Fayre” she grinned, “What with getting married in the orchard and everything. So lots of greens and reds - apple colors” she added.
Deryn actually clapped at that. She loved the idea of it -- particularly because she could easily dress for it, considering. “Ooh, that’s going to be so cute oh my goooshhh!”
“I hope so” she smiled, “The caterer is totally on board and AJ, Mac and I have been making table decorations and things like that”
“Aw,” said Deryn, licking at her ice cream, and then at her hand since that’s where a good majority of the ice cream had gone. “I coulda helped.”
“Oh I’m sorry, it never occurred to me to ask. I figured people would be getting sick of me and wedding talk” Tonks told her friend, “But I’ll let you know if there is anything you can give me a hand with” she promised.
“It’s okay,” Deryn said with a forgiving smile. “I tend to break things anyway.”
"I'm a bit clumsy too" Tonks revealed, "More so in my dreams than here thankfully, but still I have my moments"
Deryn laughed at that, honestly pleased to hear it. “Yeah? Me too, haha. Way worse in my dreams.” Which was saying a lot, since she should have taken up stock in band-aid brand even here.
"Interesting isn't it? The traits we have here and there. I think I'd have to find a new job if I was as bad as the dream Tonks though, everybody would get away" she chuckled.
“I know what you mean,” she agreed with a nod before crunching away at her ice cream cone. “I’m not sure they’d let me have a job here at all if I was that bad.” She knocked over barns just by existing near them.
"Oh dear, that does sound bad" Tonks told her friend with a smile, "Maybe we should be glad that not everything from the dreams leak into our real lives. I'm pretty happy with the bits that have, I don't really need any more"
“Exactly that!” If Deryn had a beer she would have raised it in toast. But she didn’t, so a sticky thumbs up would have to do.
