Zelda made sure that the gate was open ten minutes before Loki was supposed to arrive. She was sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee, looking at her flowers. The place looked a lot better than it’d looked a couple of months ago when she’d started working in the garden. It was nice to be able to sit on the porch in the morning air, before it got hot, and enjoy the atmosphere.
Loki arrived precisely on time. He believed quite strongly in being punctual, and had no patience for time-wasters. He drove up and got out of the car, giving her a wave when he saw her.
“Beautiful morning, isn’t it?” he asked.
“It is.” Zelda responded, breaking into a warm smile. It was still early enough in the morning that she wasn’t too hyped up on caffeine yet. She was calm--a sort of strange thing for the tiny blonde. “You found the place all right?” She asked, pulling herself up to her feet. He was on time, so he couldn’t have gotten too lost.
“Yeah. GPS is a miraculous thing,” he teased. He walked up to the porch and turned to look around, letting out a low whistle. “Lovely property. Really.”
“Thank you.” Okay, her family had more money than sense. But it really was a nice place; a relatively new five bedroom house on plenty of land. She had a lovely garden in the front, and a swimming pool in the back. “I helped design it. Do you want to see my garden??” She asked, growing excited at the prospect of showing off her plants.
“That would be fantastic, if I could. I’ve never had a mind for gardening, but I do love admiring them.” Loki flashed her a grin.
“I don’t normally have the patience for that sort of thing. Gardening. But I’ve been really trying!” Zelda said, breaking into a grin at the sight of his grin. “Come this way!” She led him around the side of the house, pointing out the different veggies she had growing, and then some roses, and around the back of the house to a grassed in area, and the pool.
He followed her, quietly admiring it. “A very lovely home. You should be proud of it. Why on earth would you want to come be a magician’s assistant,” he asked, teasing.
Zelda laughed. It was musical and happy, innocent and fun. “Are you kidding? I’ve always wanted to learn about magic! Though, I wonder if I’ll be spoiled if I get to see it from the other side.” She said, breaking into a huge grin as she motioned to a chair by the pool. “Sit, I’ll go grab you a cup. You take cream and sugar?”
“I think you’ll find it makes you more interested in it.” Loki grinned and sat, giving her a nod. “Both, thank you.”
“Sure.” She gave him a grin, then hummed as she popped inside to pour him a cup. She dressed it up, then came back out, still humming some Taylor Swift song. She took a seat next to him in the patio furniture, offering the cup.
“So, tell me more about the show you’ve got planned for 2014!”
“Thank you.” Loki took the coffee with a smile, then took a sip from his cup. “Well, I haven’t really worked out the specifics yet. The thing about a good magic show is that it needs to tell a story. It’s not really unlike any other stage production. We develop props that help create the illusion, rigging, lights, the whole shebang. Though I’m thinking something of a throwback to the golden age of magic. The Houdini era and all.”
“Ooh, I’ve read a bit about Houdini! I did a research project on him in school! I’d love to help with something like that!” Not to mention, Zelda could bring quite a bit of money and star power to his project, if they decided to work together. The young blonde seemed excitable about everything this morning.
“He was an amazing man. And there’s something so simple and amazing about magic from that time. These days, we have all sorts of things at our fingertips, they just had ingenuity and stage presence. I think it could make an amazing show.” Loki took another drink of coffee. “I highly suggest reading up on him more if you get the chance. Actually, if you’re interested, I could probably bring you up to the Magic Castle some day to look around.”
“Yes!” Zelda’s eyes were bright. “Okay, I’ve got my homework. And then... field trip!” She nodded, and sipped from her mug. “I’m definitely interested. What would... I have to do? If you decide that I’m a good fit, I mean.”
Her enthusiasm was infectious. For the most part, Loki was a bit on the sullen or haughty side, but when it came to his profession he was very gleeful about it. It was good to see someone sharing in that.
“First and foremost, you’d have to keep a secret. But you understand binding contracts, being in films, so I’m sure you won’t sell out the tricks to anyone.” He took a drink of coffee and set the cup down. “And a lot of times, especially with old magic, the assistants were sort of used to distract the audience. She’s someone to look at while the illusion happens. I’ll have to teach you some bits here and there, but mostly, you’d be a prop. Which sounds awful, but it’s the truth, at the end of the day.”
Zelda simply nodded at the binding contracts bit. Of course she knew how to keep a secret. She was a Hyrule, after all. That’s what they did. Celebrity and everything. “And, really? I’m okay with being a prop.” She beamed. “Do I get to wear sexy, sultry dresses and huge, spike heels?”
“Not quite,” he said, laughing, “I’m not Vegas show act. Think more … Edwardian glamour, perhaps playful ‘twenties. If that’s all right with you,” Loki said, amused.
“Oooh, you mean... like Downton Abby?” Zelda asked, grinning. “I can do that. I’d totally rock that look.”
“Something like that, actually, yeah.” Loki laughed again.
“I think this is all coming together nicely,” Zelda beamed. “I mean, we’ve got half the show here. Me in Edwardian glamour, you working your magic on stage... what more do we need?” She teased.
“You mean besides a few tricks, a space, and a paying audience?” He grinned over his coffee. “I’m very excited about it now. Sometimes it just takes some talking about it to really get the inspiration flowing. I suspect I’ll start working on some things once I get home.”
Zelda laughed. “Right. That.” She gave him a bright grin. This was turning into something totally. awesome. “I... I don’t want to toot my own horn, or anything,” she added, leaning in a little over her coffee cup. “But... with my name on the marquee? I have a feeling people will show.” She was humble... to a point... but she wasn’t stupid. Zelda had someone on her payroll simply to deal with her fan mail.
Loki raised his eyebrow, falling into one of those moments where it was hard to tell if he was amused or not. But the fact of the matter remained, to him, that it was inherently his show, and he certainly didn’t need boosts.
“I suspect, then,” he said, taking a polite sip of coffee, “that you’ll be disappointed to know that assistants don’t make the marquee. What, with being props and all.”
“Oh, right, right.” Zelda said, nodding. “I didn’t mean...” She shook her head a little and lifted her coffee mug to her lip. “I just figure... y’know... if you’re looking for an audience, finding a popular name or twitter handle to talk about it might be a good way to spread the word.”
“The audience will come, no need to worry.” He waved a hand dismissively. “Though I appreciate your enthusiasm.”
“Well, I’ve got it in spades!” Zelda said, perking up again. She took the dismissive wave of his hand to mean that she hadn’t actually offended with her comment before. She wasn’t expecting her name on the marquee literally--were there really marquees still, now-a-days?--but he couldn’t deny that her name attached to any project was going to bring it more attention. “Just tell me what you need from me. I’m your girl!”
“I’ll certainly let you know as plans begin to fall into place.” He’d likely get over it in a matter of days, but for the time being, Loki would be lying if he said that Zelda hadn’t mildly hurt her chances just now. It wasn’t that he was vindictive, just … That he was him. And he was vain at the best of the times.
“Wonderful.” Zelda gulped again from her coffee, then moved to stand. “Would you like to take some zucchini? I have plenty in the garden. ...and Watermelon. I don’t know how I’m going to be able to eat it all.”
“Oh, gosh, I couldn’t possibly.” He finished off his own coffee, then stood, laughing. “Well, all right, if I must. How could I say no to garden fresh delights?”
Zelda gave him a bright grin. She set her coffee mug down. “Come on with me. You can pick out your own!”
“Ooh, how exciting.” Loki set his cup next to hers and followed her, glad to have smoothed over his crispness from earlier.
When Zelda said she was overrun with zucchini, she wasn’t kidding. And the things were huge. A foot long, several inches in diameter. “I’ve been shredding it and freezing it so I can make zucchini bread later.” She said, giving him a smile. “But I’ve got plenty. Take a few, as many as you like.”
“You’re too kind, really.” He took a few, what he could carry, anyway, while keeping in mind he had a watermelon to carry, too. “I’ll let you know how it is.”
Zelda picked up the watermelon. It was huge. Probably a twenty pound thing. And it wasn’t even the biggest of the bunch! “Please do. And if you’ve got any good recipes, feel free to pass those along, too.” She grinned as she walked him to his car.
“I’ve plenty, but some of them are my mother’s and she’ll have my head if I share them.” Loki raised his eyebrows and made it look like he maneuvered his hand to press the unlock button on his keys, but in reality it was a small dose of his newfound magic. He took a couple of books out of a box and set the zucchini inside. “Phew.”
“Right? I love this gardening stuff, but it’s amazing how big these things get!” She passed over the watermelon so he could put it in his car. “Thanks for coming over. I do hope we’ll get to work together soon.” She said. Of course, that would all depend on scheduling and preference and contracts and agents... all of that stuff.
“I’ll certainly keep you posted. I put most of my notices on the net anyway, so you’ll be bound to see it. Have a wonderful day. I think it’s going to be a good one.” Loki closed the door to his car and climbed into the front seat, glancing at Zelda with a quick smile.
Zelda returned the smile, gave a wave, then headed up into the house as he pulled out of the driveway.
