Alice had a personal website, and the House of Glinda website on her resume. She’d done a little work for her high school, too, fan club sites and that sort of thing. She was looking forward to talking to someone who worked in the computer industry, and getting some real feedback. And if he had any contracting work, she’d love that, too. More things to add to her resume!
John was finding the net was a handy place to find people who sounded great for his company. It had been easier than he thought it would be to find work and even using his ‘consultants’ he was still making way more than he had dreamed he would for a start up company.
He was looking forward to meeting Alice Cullen, if she was half as good as he hoped then he’d have web design covered too. He already had a couple of enquiries for that type of work.
Alice arrived at the office and pushed her way in, then glanced around for John. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to recognise him when she saw him, so she went up to the first person she saw. “Hello, I’m looking for John Connor?” She said, politely, breaking into a smile.
“You’ve found him” John replied with a grin, “Miss Cullen I presume?” he checked as he held out his hand.
“That’s me! Call me Alice.” She said, reaching forward and shaking his hand. “I brought my work examples,” she said, motioning to the laptop bag on her shoulder. “If you’d like to see?” She really didn’t know how job interviews went.
"Good to meet you Alice" John smiled before nodding, "That would be great" John didn't really have much more of an idea, he'd been making it up as he went.
“Sure. So... your office? Where would you like me to set up?” She asked, drawing the purple laptop from Glinda out of her bag.
“Follow me” he said leading her through the computer room to the smaller office he used for meetings and such. “Nice laptop” he told her as she set it on the desk, “I didn’t think that model had been released onto the market yet”
Alice followed after him, then set the computer up on the desk. “My employer has contacts.” She said, then booted the thing up and clicked through to the House Of Glinda website she’d set up. “She also really likes pink, as I’m sure you can tell.” The website had a lot of pink and bubbles. But it was interactive and engaging, with plenty of links to the other designers, and lots of photos.
John smirked, “Yep I’m getting that” he chuckled, “It’s a good site though” he bent to begin browsing - “Oh, may I?” he asked Alice waiting for consent before revealing the code behind the site. He nodded as he looked through it, “Good, you’ve made some good choices”
“Oh, of course.” He could find it pretty easily with or without her permission, anyway, so she allowed him. “Thanks. I’m still learning, obviously,” there was some excess code in there, but it only made things slightly sloppy, didn’t hurt anything else. “I’m sure I’m going to get better once I’m actually studying the stuff.” College wasn’t coming fast enough, and was screaming toward her at lightning speed at the same time.
He didn’t expect it to be perfect, she’d soon tighten things up when she learnt how, he could see that already. “I’m sure you’ll be the star pupil in no time” he told her, “You’d go to the top of my class anyway. I think I can throw some work your way, I won’t overload you but a project or two a month maybe? Might be nice for you to be able to earn some cash while studying too”
Alice gave a little chuckle and a blush. “Thank you.” She blinked, the smile fading into a look of surprise. It came back, though, in less than a second. “Really? I’d love that. I’d love to be involved.” She said, sounding fairly excited. “I’d love the additional income, too. Not gonna lie.” She grinned. “Thank you, Mr. Connor.”
"Really" he nodded, she had skills and he was all about encouraging talent in the field of IT. "Please call me John, Mr Connor is way too formal" he grinned.
Alice beamed. “Okay, John. I’m looking forward to working with you.” She moved to collect up her things, as it felt like the interview was mostly over. “Now... can you tell me where the nearest place to get a mocha is? I’m itching.”
“You too Alice. I look forward to seeing your progress too” he smiled at her encouragingly before chuckling, “You sound like my girlfriend. There’s a Starbucks not too far, turn right out of the building and it’s two blocks over”
“Thanks.” Alice gave him a bright smile as she filled up her bag. “I haven’t been sleeping well, so the caffeine will help me focus. I’d like to get a little more work done this afternoon.” And not sleep. Not sleeping was good.
“Don’t try and escape the dreams by staying awake” John said, “I mean if that’s what you’re trying to do” he shrugged, “I don’t mean to pry but take it from me, it seems to be worse if you avoid sleeping. Eventually you have to and they become even more vivid”
Alice blinked at him. Had he just read her mind? Like Edward? Whoa, that was weird. She shook her head, trying to shake it off. “Nah, just... need to stay awake while I’m awake and sleep while I’m sleeping.” She said, giving him a convincing smile. “I’ll have more to show you next time we speak.” She shouldered her bag, and turned to head out.
John hadn’t needed to, he’d tried to stay awake on caffeine too to escape the dreams so he knew the signs. “Fair enough” he nodded, taking her at her word, “That sounds great. Thanks for coming by Alice, I look forward to seeing the development” He showed her out before returning to his office, a smile on his face.
