John turned his bike off as he arrived at the address Tink had given him, he was looking forward to seeing the set up she had. He did wonder what she did for a living, he figured it must be something to do with computers as she knew more than the average person.
Still, he’d find out soon enough. Making his way up the bath he rang the bell and waited.
There was a crash on the other side of the door just after the bell rang. A loud curse came in a woman’s voice, and there was a scuffling. A moment later, the door opened, and Tink was standing there. She was wearing yoga pants and a tank top, barefoot, with something like ink all over the fingers of one hand.
“You must be John.” She said, giving him a smile. “Just a sec.” And she turned to clear things out of the way so she could get the door open.
Tink’s apartment was a small, one-bedroom, and the walls and a lot of the floor were filled with contraptions. She’d made Rube Goldberg devices to do all sorts of things in her place for her--like folding and hanging laundry, cooking her breakfast, even turning the television on and off. She’d been working with stamps, like on a typewriter, and they were scattered all over the floor.
John’s eyebrows raised as he heard the commotion on the other side of the door just before a dishevelled woman appeared. He nodded as she smiled before managing to open the door, “Uh Hi” he said, “Did I come at a bad time? You look like you’re in the middle of something” he said.
“Oh, I’m always in the middle of something.” Tink said, giving him a bright smile. “uh... come on in. Do you want booties for your shoes?” She had those little, papery booties that like, plumbers wear when they come into your house. “I may or may not have spilled some ink around here.”
“Oh uh sure, wouldn’t want to trail ink around your home” John said, looking around, “So are you an inventor or what?” he asked curiously.
Tink grabbed a couple of booties. “I’m more worried about your shoes,” she confessed, handing them over to him so he could put them on. “Uh... yeah. I dabble. I’m a dabbler.”
John bent down to pop them over his shoes, he did appreciate it he doubted his girlfriend or her sister would be too impressed if he tracked ink all over the house. “Ah I see” he nodded, “Hence your knowledge of the computer systems”
“Oh, yeah, you kinda have to know computers when you tinker as much as I do.” Tink said, giving him a bright smile. She turned to lead him further into the apartment, then turned toward her desk where the computer was. “I’m a mechanic by trade, but in my dabbling, I’ve found I like really fast computers.”
He followed easily, taking in everything that was all over the place. He was sure if he didn’t work with computers as much he’d be just as bad but some of his work required as clean a space as possible. “Oh okay, well it’s always handy to know a mechanic” he grinned, “There should really be no other type of computer but people don’t always know how much faster their computer could go”
Tink gave a little laugh and clap of her hands. “Hey, that’s right. Always good to know a mechanic. And a good, cheap one, too.” She nodded as she started to tidy quickly around the desk, moving odds and ends so he could have a seat. “Well, I’m afraid I may have overclocked this one a bit hard. Need a little advice. I think it’s running too hot?”
“Good and cheap is especially good when it comes to mechanics” John grinned cheekily, “I’ll be sure to come around when my bike needs a look over”
He sat and immediately began looking at the computer as he nodded, “Overheating is usually the main issue” he replied, “The heat needs even dispersal because of the increased power consumption”
“Well, I’d just peel the side off and let the fan do its business if I wasn’t scared of all the dust and crap that might get caught in there.” Tink said, perching on the arm of a nearby chair. “So, there’s my dilemma.”
John tilted his head as he removed the side of the computer, “Normally I’d say you’d be fine but it does seem like you do a lot of potentially dusty work in here” he said, looking at her with a smile before returning to the computer, “I think I could get you sorted out. There’s a few different options we could try if you like? And I can speed it up a little more too”
“Yeah, I think that’s a great idea.” Tink said, giving him a grin. She bent down to join him beside her computer. “I know it’s a bit... well, it’s kinda cheating to get a professional computer guy to help me with my overclocked computer... but I’m a bit worried about losing my terabyte of anime in there.” Okay, so she was kinda kidding. Not really.
“I think that’s more smart thinking than cheating but then I would say that” John replied with a grin, “We’ll sort you out without losing anything, I promise. So anime huh? Got a favorite?” he asked as he set about removing some of the components he would need to replace.
“Oh, I dunno. Anything by Miyazaki?” Tink said. “It’s not really all Anime. There’s a bunch of porn on there, too.” She was kidding, but you couldn’t tell by the serious expression on her features.
John nodded about to comment when she came out with the next sentence which took him by surprise. "Umm right, yeah, okay" he stuttered unable to gauge anything from her facial expression.
Tink broke into a smirk. “Seriously? Seriously? Do I seem like that type?”
“Hey I’m not judging” he told her with a grin, “You know you should play poker with that face. You’d make a mint”
A little laugh escaped her. “Maybe I should. I’d have to learn the game first. My brothers used to just poke me.” She said, then lifted one finger to poke into his shoulder. “Poke... Her. Get it?”
John snorted, “Or maybe just stick to inventing” he teased with a grin.
Tink nodded, beaming. “I never claimed to have a good sense of humor.” She put up her playful shield. “I just work the computer and the gadgets around here.”
“You don’t give yourself enough credit, this is pretty impressive stuff for someone who isn’t a complete computer geek” John told her, “And your sense of humour isn’t that bad” He reached down to his bag to grab a few bits of equipment to hook up. He didn’t have everything he needed but he could come back with it soon enough.
Or it was possible that she had some of the things he needed around. Since Tink had tons of random stuff hanging around her apartment. She sat up on the arm of the chair. “Hey, thanks. I’m normally better with cars than with computers, so I’ll take the compliment. Though, I’m sure my brother is going to come and ask me who else was playing with his computer.” She said, smirking. It was hers, really, but he was the one who souped it up for the most part.
It was very possible but John wasn't about to start rummaging through random piles of stuff. "Ah so is he a computer geek then?" John asked, "Am I going to be in trouble for interfering?" he smiled.
“Nah, not really. Both of my brothers work with computers. I think I get my nerdiness from them.” She said, absolutely proudly of her nerdiness. “I doubt they’re going to care. They’ll just think they did a really good job with it next time they come to visit and see the work you’ve put in.”
“My mum has no idea where my nerdiness comes from, she hates technology” John told her, “Well if they do notice you should say you’ve been playing around, see how they react” he grinned.
Tink broke into an evil grin. “I might just take all the credit myself.” She teased. “Nah, they’d never believe it. My brothers are way more into computers than I am. My parents are pretty average. They’re not as geeky as my brothers and I are, though.”
“True, you might get caught out if they ask you to show them how you did it” he smiled, “My sister isn’t my level but she’s not as bad as my mum. Good mix I guess” he told her. “Right I need to get a few things from my office, I can grab them and be back in less than an hour or come back another time?”
Tink grinned. “Well, I’m not going anywhere today, so... so long as you don’t mind the drive?” She turned to walk him back to the front door. There was another crash that came from the kitchen as they walked, but Tink ignored it.
“Not at all” John said, “I’d rather get it all done for you so you don’t have to worry about all the porn disappearing” he grinned at her. “I’ll be back as quick as I can” and with that he disappeared out the door.
