Myrcella was looking forward to spending the day with Billy. Not only were they doing something fun but Billy was also a great friend and she missed seeing him as often as she did when they were at school.
She had made her way to the rollerskating place, thanks to the bus lessons Jeremy had given her, and was now waiting for Billy to arrive. She hadn’t been skating for a long time but hoped it would be like riding a bike.
Billy bounced in, grinning, happy to meet up with his friend. She was a good person, and she was nice, and he hoped this would be fun. When he saw her, he smiled wider, and waved. “Myrcella! Hi!”
“Hi Billy” Myrcella waved back before hugging him as he got close enough, “It’s good to see you. How have you been enjoying summer so far?” she asked.
He hugged her and grinned. “Good to see you too! And pretty good. Mostly enjoying a summer of swimming and reading. Just finished an advanced swimming class, and now have a few weeks before fall semester starts.” He grinned at her wider. “And you?”
He walked with her toward the rollerskate rental nook.
“Well done, advanced swim class sounds like fun. What have you been reading? Anything good?” Myrcella loved books, she’d sadly had to leave a lot behind in the UK but was slowly building up her collection here.
She smiled, “I went to Disneyland, that was a lot of fun” she told him blushing slightly as it made her think of Jeremy, “Other than that reading mostly and spending time with my Uncles”
“Cool!” Spotting her blush, he raised an eyebrow as he got some skates and sat down to put them on. “Sounds like fun! At least you’re making some friends, right?”
Myrcella nodded as she sat down to put her own skates on, “I am” she said smiling brightly, “It was Jeremy who invited me, do you know him? He’s great” she added shyly.
“I think we talked once online.” Billy grinned as he glanced at her and then nodded. Aha! “You like him, huh?” He stood and tested his skates, then grinned at her again as he stomped to get them settled.
"Quite a lot" Myrcella admitted with a smile, "He's funny and kind and sweet. I just like spending time with him, you know what I mean?" she replied as she too stood. Somewhat less confidently than Billy but not too wobbly.
“That’s awesome! I’m glad you found someone you like.” He grinned and made sure she looked stable, and then led the way toward the started area. “We can practice here and get our legs back, then go on to the main floor.”
“Thank you” Myrcella replied following, “That sounds like a good plan” she nodded. “So how about you Billy? Has any lucky girl caught your eye?” she asked him smiling as they began to rollerskate around.
Billy blushed and grinned. "Ah, well, yes and no. The girl who I like is a little older and won't ever like me like I like her."
“Oh I’m sorry Billy” Myrcella said looking a little sad, “But just because she is older doesn’t mean she won’t like you too. Have you spoken to her?” Myrcella loved fairytales and romantic stories and she hated the idea that people didn’t get happy endings. In that way she was very naive.
Billy smiled ruefully. He shrugged. “I have sort of, but... er, I am 17, and she is... over age.” He knew he didn’t care, but it did mean there were legal and moral situations in the mix.
And he would not put Barbara in the trouble that might bring.
"Oh right, I forget the age is higher here" Myrcella replied, "It's 16 back home" she explained, "I'm really sorry. But when you turn 18 maybe you could ask her out then" she added optimistically.
Billy grinned. “I am planning on it, assuming someone more dashing doesn’t swoop in and sweep her off her feet.” He nodded as he stepped onto the practice area, and started shifting, trying to get his skating legs, so to speak.
"I will hope they don't" Myrcella told him, stepping into the area herself, "Or if they do that you can be even more dashing and win her back"
Billy laughed. “I don’t do dashing, really. Mostly I’m lucky when I don’t fall on my feet.” He chuckled as he moved slowly around, slowly stretching his legs and skimming around the little area. “I do like rollerskating though. I’m glad you could come out.”
Myrcella laughed, "Falling gracefully might work" she teased. Before giving him a bright smile, "It's been ages since I've been, thank you for inviting me"
"Maybe so." He smiled to her as they warmed up. "And, you're welcome. You're my friend and it's been awhile since I've been skating, too." Billy eyed the rink, then smiled to her. "Ready to go?"
Myrcella was so glad she had met Billy, he’d quickly become a good friend.
She nodded, “Let’s go. I think we’re as practiced as we can be”
