It was fair to say that Glinda was excited. She had loved the beautiful items which Canaan had linked her to and thought they could definitely use her services for the fashion house.
Elphaba had allowed Glinda to use her office for the meeting, insisting that Glinda could do it alone. So when Canaan had text her she had set the meeting for there. Now she was currently sat waiting for the other woman to arrive. She had a small list of questions written down in case she forgot anything but knew the most important thing was containing her excitement. It was unprofessional, Elphaba said so.
Canaan wouldn't have minded if the excitement wasn't contained. She wasn't quite yet on the level she would have called 'professional'. Though she'd been the one to approach Glinda, she was now more than a little nervous about the meeting. Still, she wanted to more with her life than she was doing, and this was an important step.
So she flashed Glinda as warm a smile as she could manage when the office assistant let her in, "Hello."
“Hi” Glinda said as she looked up when the other woman entered, “Canaan right?” she asked holding out her hand, “I’m Glinda, pleased to meet you”
"It's good to meet you, too," Canaan replied, shaking Glinda's hand. Her handshake was just firm enough, she hoped, to express confidence in the meeting and her own handiwork.
She held up a black zippered case she'd brought in with her, "I brought a few pieces with me, as promised. Including some of my newer work. I'm really glad that you had the time to see me."
“I’m so looking forward to seeing your work, the links you sent through were brilliant” Glinda informed her, “Both Elphaba, my accountant, and myself are very much looking forward to working with you”
She smiled kindly, “Not at all, thank you for taking the time to come and see me”
The other woman filed the name 'Elphaba' away in her head, and nodded. It was good to know the names of everyone you were doing business with, and what role they all played.
"It's still a little amazing when someone likes my work, I'm getting used to that, but I'm very glad to hear that you were pleased with the photos I had up."
Glinda’s inexperience at business meetings meant she hadn’t thought to explain herself and Elphaba’s set up, she was more eager to see Canaan’s pretty items.
“I think you’ll need to get used to it my dear because if they are anything like the photos then lots of people will be complimenting and buying from you”
"I'll let you decide for yourself!" Canaan replied, with a bit of a grin. She unzipped the case she'd brought with her and started pulling out a series of smaller pouches, each of which contained some piece of jewelry or other.
There were five necklaces, three bracelets, and a pair of earrings to look at, "I can range from more elegant things to earthy ones. I like both styles, and have access to some gorgeous gemstones sometimes. This one is one of the ones I created recently, inspired by the... odd happenings around here."
She motioned to one made with a matte, dark metal that was set with luminous, bright blue crystals. The metal had been wrapped and twisted to look like some kind of circuitry pattern.
As soon as Glinda saw the items spread out in front of her all hints of professionalism left her immediately. She clapped her hands together and smiled brightly, “Oh my goodness” she said “These are absolutely amazing. How very beautiful”
She stood and came round to Canaan’s side of the table so she could see them closer without the other woman having to push them across the table. “You have a lot of talent, I can see our designers loving you completely. I know I already do,” she clasped one of Canaan’s hands as she spoke, bouncing a little in excitement as Glinda was known to do.
Glinda's excitement was hard to ignore, it added an energy to the room that made a person want to feel a little more welcome or carefree. It made Canaan almost giggle. That was something she rarely ever did! What she did do was grin widely at Glinda and bounce on her heels a bit, in return.
"I'm working on a new set that I haven’t finished, which plays with contrasts between more subtle colors and more bright ones - these pieces would be good for upcoming fashions, I think. Fall colors go more muted but with hints of warmer, richer hues and these pieces would offset the clothing. I wish I had those to show, but..."
She bounced on her heels again, "It would look almost like autumn leaves set against a cloudy sky. And I can custom make a few things. Whatever your designers need."
"Oh you know this has me so excited" Glinda told her, "I'm so glad we found you or rather you found us" she shook her head whichever way round it was she was glad of it.
"That sounds beautiful and I just know our designers are going to be just as excited as I am. I can't wait to tell them all about you" she enthused wrapping Canaan in a bouncy embrace before she returned to looking at the beautiful items in front of her.
The hug was unexpected, and actually made Canaan laugh, "You have such an energy to you, I think they'd be excited to see my things no matter what. It's hard not to be as excited as you are!"
"Can you tell me more about your designers? And the fashion house in general?"
Glinda grinned, "Thank you. I think I try Elphie's patience sometimes. She's very professional you see but I let my excitement show too much" she blushed slightly before nodding. "Oh of course, I'm sorry. Lets see, we have five stylists at the moment. All working under the umbrella of the Haus of Glinda, affordable, fashionable clothing by the best up and coming designers around"
"I like that you're making the clothing so accessible," Canaan replied, with a nod. She felt the same way about her jewelry - she wanted to be paid fairly, but she wanted people to wear her things, too, "It is often a hard balance, but I want my jewelry to be affordable, too. There's no point in making pretty things if no one can buy them."
Glinda nodded, "It just doesn't seem fair and I mean the things they put models in on the catwalks! They're terrible, you wouldn't be caught dead wearing it in public but people buy because of a name" The things Glinda has worn during her modelling days made her shudder.
"Everybody should have a chance to own beautiful things, be it clothing or jewelry"
"I agree." Canaan nodded. This place had good values. She didn't really get to ask questions or pick her enemies or allies in her other line of work, and she liked making up for that when she could.
"Do I need to sign anything? I promised a few pieces for free, and I still stand by that, but you probably have some kind of terms if my work catches on?"
“Oh yes, I have a contract here” Glinda said as she rifled around on the desk, “Please take it away and read through it. If you have any questions then Elphaba is probably the best one to answer them” She knew it was a basic 5% contract with an opt out clause for both parties after 6 months and then another 12 months after. Glinda thought it was fair and so far none of the designers had disagreed but they were prepared to look at it again should the need arise.
The terms of the contract sounded fair, but Canaan decided she'd read it through and then have her handler go over it with a fine toothed comb, too, just to be sure.
The idea that she might be signing a contract to produce make something for a living instead of her other job was so exciting that she almost wanted to sign it right there. That wasn't the best idea, though, and she wanted to look like she knew what she was doing, "I'll look it over. Can I have your business card, and Elphaba's, too? So that I can call with any questions I might have."
“Of course” Glinda nodded, pulling out her own business card (yes it was pink and sparkly) and Elphaba’s (professional and clear) to hand them over. “You should always be able to get hold of me, I’m never far from my cellphone” she grinned, “And if I can’t answer I can always find out and get back to you. Elphie is best contacted during normal office hours” Glinda would answer her phone whenever but then it was her personal one anyway.
The little flecks of light coming off the sparkles on Glinda's card momentarily captured Canaan's attention. She wiggled the card just slightly to watch the light ripple across it, then tucked both cards away into her wallet with a smile.
"I have my own card in this bag here if you need to contact me. I thought I would leave these pieces in your care for now - that way your partner and designers can get a close look at them."
Glinda loved her business cards, she had been very specific about the design of them. They completely matched her personality.
"That would be great. I promise I will take the greatest of cares with them," She said solemnly.
They were amazing business cards. Canaan would agree that the pink sparkles matched. She had a great deal of respect for people who embraced and accepted who they were.
She rose from the seat she'd taken, contract in hand, and smiled, "I'm sure that you will, I trust you with their care. You're a good person, and it shows. I'm very glad to be potentially doing business with you."
Glinda flushed and gave Canaan a bright smile, "Thank you. I'm very excited that we could soon have you on board with us. This whole project is going to be simply in incredible" she enthused, standing too.
"I really believe it. I want to help you do incredible things." Canaan replied, with complete sincerity. She smiled brightly at Glinda and tucked the contracts and business cards away into her bag.
"I don't want to keep you. I should have this back to you soon."
"No rush" she replied, "Make sure you are completely happy with it first" Glinda told her, moving forward to hug the other woman. "It truly has been lovely meeting you"
The hug was returned, and Canaan for once felt like it wasn't odd at all to have this kind of physical contact with a stranger. Glinda, she realised, reminded her of an old friend. It made her even more happy to have met her, "It has been wonderful, I mean that. I can't wait to start designing pieces for you all."
