Khamul walked into Fluttershy's pet shop, and all the animals fell deathly silent. It was as though a chill hovered about him.
It was very warm in the pet shop that day, and the chill was extremely noticeable, but not in the usual way. Fluttershy could feel it crawling across her skin, but it wasn't as if the air conditioning had suddenly turned on. It made the hairs on her arm stand on end, and her pet rabbit shivered in place on the counter.
"...excuse me," she finally whispered, after she got over her fear of the man enough to speak,"Are you here to buy something?"
"I want a bunny," the man replied, sounding like he belonged somewhere else entirely.
This man wanted a bunny? She wasn't sure she wanted to sell a bunny to him, he was scaring all the animals and... well he was just all around creepy. She picked Angel up and hugged him to her chest, then whispered, "... I don't know if have a bunny for you ... you don't seem the bunny type..."
"Why do I not look like the bunny type?" He walked over to the bunny cage, and all the bunnies inside shied away from him.
Fluttershy wanted to say something, anything to get this man out of her shop, but that would just ... well it would be mean, and maybe he had a reason for being so off-putting. She was sure he had a good explanation, despite the fact that he terrified her for no good reason she could think of.
She opened her mouth to give him some kind of reply, but all that came out was a squeak.
Khamul leaned over the bunny cage. The animals inside all started to shake, at once. He pointed at one, particularly cute looking bunny, "How much for that one?"
It was impossible to know which one he was pointing at without somehow inching closer to him, and the bunnies. There was an inner war for a while between instincts to protect the bunnies from this scary man and instincts to run away and hide from this scary man. The bunnies won, in the end, and Fluttershy slowly made her way over.
"Oh that one ... that one is... 15 dollars, but you... you need a cage and things..." she trailed off and nearly squeaked again.
"How much is a cage?" He picked up the bunny, which promptly poo'd in terror.
"...30 dollars for the smallest one, but a bunny really needs more... space, and..." she almost reached out to take the bunny away from him, "Are you... uhm... sure you want a bunny?"
"I know a woman," Khamul replied, as the bunny continued to utterly shiver in fright!
"You want to buy... the bunny for a woman?" Fluttershy nearly squeaked that out, as well, then reached out a hand to the bunny, "Shh... it's okay..."
"A friend of mine. Do they poop all over the place?"
"Oh no, not normally. These ones are all litter trained, but you've scared the poor thing is all..." Fluttershy continued to try and comfort the bunny, which continued to shiver in terror.
He dropped the bunny into the woman's hand, "Maybe I'm not so interested in your defective bunnies."
As Fluttershy carefully caught the bunny and cradled it against her, her brow furrowed. She glanced up at him, trying to look into his eyes. What kind of person called a helpless little bunny rabbit defective!?
He just... he just... maybe no one had ever loved him. Her face sunk completely, "Oh ... oh mr. ... person, the bunnies aren't defective at all... and I don't know why you think so... but, well," she looked like she was on the brink of tears, "It's okay to think so, I... you're only saying that because the bunny didn't love you immediately. Sometimes bunnies are like that. It just needs to get used to you."
Khamul stared at her like she'd grown an extra head, then shook his head, "How much is a goldfish?"
"Oh a goldfish, that's... that's a good second choice," she nodded her head and lead him in the direction of the fish tank display, "We have these... they're plain goldfish, just 2 dollars each, and then you'll need a tank. The fancy fin speckled ones are 5."
Goldfish, Fluttershy thought, were much better for someone like him. They were much easier to take care of and didn't require much handling. She didn't think he was the kind of man who was used to handling cute, defenseless little animals.
"I'll take ten," He replied. "And food. And a bowl."
"Oh but, ten of which kind?" she asked, while getting out a box and a bunch of bags to fill with water.
"Those." He pointed at the fighting fish!
She frowned and shook her head, "Oh no, you can't... it's not really reccomended to have 10 in the same tank, you'd have to put them all in different bowls..."
"I want 10 in the same tank."
"But you..." her brow furrowed again, "I ... don't think you understand, they'll kill eachother."
Khamul just grinned at her.
In response to that grin, Fluttershy brought both hands up to her mouth, and squeaked.
"I have to watch this."
She shook her head at him, wordlessly.
Khamul folded his arms, then shrugged, and walked out of the store. It grew noticeably warmer when he left.
Fluttershy spent a few very long seconds staring at the exit, then finally tugged on her hair and cried out, "Who does that!?"
