Nate nodded as he hugged Navi, then let her slide the pan of cheesecake cookies into the oven, the first of six pans waiting to go. They had met up and talked and he had, finally, showed her how to make them, even as he enjoyed hanging out with his friend. “-- and now we wait! Let’s go take a load off.” He set the timer, then grinned.
He loved hanging out with Navi, who was an awesome woman and now that he topped her height by some, he felt just as bouncy as when he was half her size.
“Aww, why do we have to wait?” Navi pouted out her lower lip then chuckled. “Can I lick the spoons?”
“Because I try not to change the laws of physics every week.”He laughed and made a face at her. “Of course you can. It’s your kitchen, and you can darn well lick the spoon all the want!” He nodded. He might be playing the teacher today, but he acknowledged her as the Mistress of this kitchen with no contest.
Happily, Navi moved to sit down at the kitchen table, purring a little when the spoon hit her mouth. “Umf,” she purred.
Nate grinned wider, and nodded. She was cute, and nice. “How have you been, oh lady of the house?” It had been far too long since he had dragged himself here last.
“Oh, I’m good. Just getting bigger.” She patted her stomach. “She’s growing so much every day, it’s crazy.”
“Oh yeah? What fruit is she now?” He grinned at her wording. “And when did she become a she?” He was curious now. “Do you have names yet?”
“I’ve always thought she was a she, and she’s a honeydew coconut. Somewhere between the two.” Navi ran her fingers over her belly, motioning for Nate to do the same. “Not yet. We’re still deciding. I want Zelda for her name if I end up being right about her being a girl.”
Nate gently touched her belly, and smiled softly, eyes distant for a moment. Then he blinked and grinned widely. “Zelda will be thrilled. “ He nodded to her. “I love track of time, how far along is she now?”
He hmmed, then eyed Navi. “I’ve begun training Zelda, as much as I can, to see and use her power without being scared of it.”
“Oh, that’ll be good for her. She could kind of control it in the dreams.” Navi smiled, and shrugged. “She’s eight months along. What was that look?”
“Just wondering if you would like me to link us and say hello to her.” His eyes were warm and his mind stroked Navi’s then, a warm presence that felt like, well, Nate.
Navi’s eyes went wide. “Sure! I trust you.” Her wings were out and fluttering, a sure sign she was happy.
Nate smiled to her and his mind reached out to hers, then to the baby’s and then they were all connected. Nate smiled softly as he sent warmth and let the baby feel her mother’s love and care, and the baby nearly clung to it’s mother's mind, wordless emotions and needs and desires filling its consciousness. .
Blue eyes welled up with happy tears, and Navi let the little one know that its mom and dad were so looking forward to meeting her, that they were looking forward to a life of love and laughter and hugs and kisses with her.
Nate smiled softly, watching her, and watching, in his mind, their minds touch and communicate, the baby snuggling against her mind and accepting un-understyandingly all, though it knew her love and returned it, in a primal fashion. ANd then, before it could become addicted to this, he gently put the babymind to sleep and brought Navi and himself back out to themselves, and hugged Navi.
“You are already a very good mother.”
Navi blushed. “You think so?” She knew she liked being a mother, and that she felt like Zelda and Link’s mom at times, but she didn’t know if she was any good at it.
“I do. I can feel your love, your care, your devotion. You will be a great mother, Navi, and if you ever need anything, no matter what, you have merely to call.” He nodded to her.
“How’d my little man get so smart?” Navi grinned and hugged Nate, strong arms wrapping around his waist. She’d always felt protective of him.
Nate blushed and hugged her. “Because he had friends like you to help him out.” He nodded and ruffled her hair. He liked her, and would always look after her. It was a thing.
“I’m glad you’re part of my family, Nate.” Navi beamed, moving to hug him, pulling him close.
“And you mine, Navi.” He hugged her close and stroked her hair, grinning, and then kissed her forehead. “You’ve been there for me through all this mess and I appreciate it.”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Navi blinked. “Is there someone who hasn’t? Do I have to hurt someone?” She folded her arms, narrowing her eyes. “I’ll do it.”
He blinked, then chuckled. “Not at all. I just meant..,. I’m grateful to you. You’re an incredible woman and a good friend.” He nodded
“I love you too,” Navi beamed, moving to hug him as tightly as she could. “I think the firefairy does too.”
He smiled as he stroked her back, comfort and friendliness radiating to her. “The firefairy?” He was confused, then. Did she mean the baby?
“The baby, yeah. Pete’s got fire powers and I’m a fairy. So of course the baby’s gonna have to be a firefairy. She’s already got a nickname.” Navi giggled when the baby thumped against her, like it knew it was being talked about.
Nate grinned. “Well, sure. And a mutant to boot, maybe.” He smirked at her and chuckled, ruffling her hair, lightly, but not condescendingly, just... fun. He felt the thump and laughed and for a moment, his voice sounded in both their minds. Easy, little firefairy. It is not time, yet, to light the world. Humor, love, and warmth rolled from his mental touch.
The baby thumped again, and Navi shook her head. “Sassmonster. Just like her daddy.” Her tone was loving and content, and Navi smiled at her stomach. “Have I mentioned how much I love Pete?”
“I do believe you have. I do believe so. And he knows it, that Groovy man that he is.” He nodded.
“Of course he does!” Navi smiled and bounced a little. “I tell him all the time.”
Nate chuckled. “And have I told you that you are absolutely cute, miss Firefairy mom? That kidlet is going to be the luckiest childling on the planet.” It would have guardians galore.
“Oh, it really will be. It’s going to have swordfighting lessons from Link and then her auntie Zelda will teach her how to be fancy. And she’ll have you too, and Kitty, and ... wow, I have a huge family.” Navi giggled.
“Yes, you do. You’ve made a huge family, and you will find that the future is bright, my dear friend.” Then he hugged her again. Then the timer went off and he bounced up. “Cookies!”
Bouncing up herself, Navi grinned. “Eeee, I can’t wait to taste them!”
He slipped out the oven mitts and then opened the oven to reveal the two pans, the smell wafting out and making him groan. “Oh man...” he slipped the pans out and set them on the rack, then grabbed a spatula. “Shall we let them cool, or have them gooey and hot?”
He waggled his eyebrows, grinning.
Navi moved to pick up one of the cookies, popping it into her mouth and fanning her mouth when it burned her. But it tasted amazing and she giggled. “I’m not good at waiting.”
Nate laughed and went to join her. Tonight was a good night, and no matter what else happened, he had a feeling this place would always be a refuge from the shadows. One he would need in coming days. A shadow ran across his face, then was gone and he smiled as he fed her another cookie.
Today was a good day and that was all that mattered.
