Audrey had talked to Percy about her engagement, and was rather excited about it. She wanted to talk to Wilson, too, since they were all becoming such good friends. (Percy had dragged James into the Bakery a few times, and Audrey had been impressed with him every time.) Perhaps they could share notes, or stories, wedding planning ideas and the like.
She had a couple of her “groom” cupcakes in a box as she headed into the hospital, looking for his office.
Wilson’s office was the largest on the floor that housed all of the rooms for oncology patients. He was going over paperwork when he heard a knock at the door. “Come in!”
Audrey poked her head into the office and broke into a grin. “Hello, James! I hope I’m not interrupting anything important.” She held up the cupcake box and swung it a little, as if it was a peace offering.
“Oh, no, not at all, come in.” He closed his laptop so that he could focus on her. “How are you?” Standing up, he took her hand and kissed her cheek.
“Hiii.” Audrey said, beaming. She returned the kiss, giving his hand a squeeze, then sat down in one of the chairs in his office and passed over the box. “For you. And Percy.” The smile couldn’t have been brighter. Well, maybe if he was Merlin.
“Oh, thank you!” He’d probably have one with lunch and then bring the rest home to Percy. “I was just saying that I wanted something sweet today, and here you are.”
“Here I am! I’m sweeter than the cupcakes, I assure you,” Audrey flirted. It was fruitless, she knew, but it was damn near impossible to turn it off! “Speaking of Percy, I’ve asked him to stand beside me at my wedding.” ...oh, whenever that was.
“He’d like that very much. Have you and your fiance decided on your colors?” He hoped that they didn’t pick something that would clash with Percy’s hair.
“Not at all.” Audrey said. Since she and Percy had such similar coloring it wouldn’t be likely that she’d choose something to clash with either of them. “I’m probably just going to let Merlin plan it. Is that wrong of me?” She asked, her nose crinkling up with a grin.
“Not wrong at all. I think Percy’s expecting me to just plan it. But that’s fine, I told him I would when he tells me what day he’d like it to be.” He and Percy were agreeable that way.
Audrey nodded. “Do you guys have any idea what the date’s going to be?” She asked. “Are you thinking about something big or small? I want to make your cake, you know.” The grin was resident on her features now.
“Not a clue. Percy’s picking the date, so I don’t know.” Wilson smiled to himself. “My first three were huge. I’d like something more intimate. And of course you’re making our cake. What, did you think I was going to do it?” Wilson wrinkled his nose. “I’m not much of a baker. I made a panna cotta the other day, and you’d have thought I’d ran a triathlon. Desserts are too much effort.”
Audrey laughed. “Leave the desserts to the professionals,” she said, giving him a wink. “Just let me know what kind you want. I’ll make it for you guys.” She loved making wedding cakes for her friends, and hadn’t had the chance in a while. “And if there’s anything else you need--Baxter Bakery is a full catering service now.”
“I’ll ask Percy what flavors he’s partial to. My guess is we’ll go vanilla cake with chocolate ganache or fondant, but I want to make sure Percy’s okay with it.” Wilson ran his fingers through his fluffy hair, chuckling. “I know him well, but I never want to assume.”
“Not a problem.” Audrey beamed. “Well, yeah. They always surprise us, don’t they? I’d hate to assume something about Merlin, too, and have that blow up in my face.” Not that she thought wedding cakes would cause a big explosion between Wilson and Percy.
“Exactly. Besides, it just seems impolite to make a big wedding decision without asking him. Communication’s been the key to our relationship thus far. I mean, if I hadn’t just come out and asked Percy if he fancied men, we never would’ve gotten together at all.” Their first date had been deliciously awkward.
Audrey nodded. “I have to thank my roommate Nina for my relationship with Merlin. I mean, she saw us together and knew that we were more than we thought we were. Consciously I knew it was my best friend, but subconsciously he was also the man I was in love with. I thought he was strictly gay, and that there was no chance for us. But then he surprised me.”
Wilson nodded. “Sexuality isn’t as static as we make it out to be. In grad school, I had a friend who was totally heterosexual, but she had the biggest crush on one of our professors. The important thing is to be open with your desires and your thoughts - communication.” Wilson smiled. “You two are happy, that’s what matters.”
“Tell me about it. I’ve kissed more women than Merlin has.” Plenty more. WAY plenty more. Not in the three giant weddings way, but in the falling-in-love-in-all-the-wrong-places kind of way. “We’re very happy. And we communicate. He walks me home from work every day.” Well, until his promotion, now it’s only once a week, but still. She didn’t need to go into that much detail. “Well, should I let you get back to work?”
Wilson smiled and took Audrey’s hand. “Yes, but you should come by more often. Friends should keep in touch. And tell Merlin that he’s a very lucky man. I’m sure he knows it.”
Audrey blushed a bit, shaking Wilson’s hand. “I will. I’ll come see you more. And you and Percy come talk to me when you decide about wedding stuff. I want to be the first to know.” She leaned over to tap a kiss against his cheek, then turned to head out of the office.
