Nate smiled as he nodded to Zelda, pouring ice water for them both. “How’re you feeling?” She looked good as usual, but he sensed a feeling of oddness and he hoped it was just his imagination, or that he could set her to rights. “I know this is probably a shock.”
“A shock is an understatement,” Zelda said, sitting back in her chair a little. She lifted both hands to accept the glass of ice water. “It’s happened a few times. I just... I can’t seem to control it.”
Nate nodded and gently took one of her hands. “Trust me in that, while it seems so new, in time, you will find a way, even if it is only by blocking it out sometimes. We have far more control of our minds than we think, when we use it, and we have to learn how to use your mind, and make it do as you like. It won't be easy, and it won't be fast, but it will happen.”
“Okay.” Zelda said, nodding as she looked into his eyes. She gave his hand a squeeze. “Tell me what I need to do. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
“To start, lets go with simple. I want you to start by taking several deep breaths, slowly, and concentrate on your breathing. Relax, and just let yourself feel every breath as it comes in and out, every sensation of it.” He nodded, his voice quiet as he spoke to her. Training would take time, but he would devote all he could to help her.
Zelda set the glass of ice water down and put her hands on her knees. “Okay, deep breaths.” She said. She closed her eyes and started to breathe slowly and deeply. Kinda felt like yoga.
He ran her through a few exercises, movements that helped center the mind and body, and empty if worries. He stood behind her and gently massaged her shoulders, hoping to help relieve tension. And all the while he talked to her, quietly, gently, wanting to help her.
It felt a lot like yoga. Only, different. Zelda did all of the exercises, working on getting in tune with her body. She felt her eyes close at the massage to her shoulders, feeling weight in her fingertips, the tension slowly melting. “...I don’t know how I’ll...” And then it hit her. She saw herself in the shower later. Later tonight she was going to take a shower. It was almost like deja vu, though in forward instead of in back?
He felt something change in her and he waited for her to come out of it before speaking softly. “You saw something, yes?”
“Yes.” Zelda’s eyes came into focus. She turned to look at him over her shoulder. “Yes. I saw myself in the shower. Later. After you leave.” She said, both excited and a little scared about it. “...that’s just... it’s just... so weird!”
Nate blushed and nodded. “I can imagine it would be. I’m sorry. I’m hoping we can train your mind and body to allow you to control when you have an onset, and to control when you have them.”
Zelda nodded. “It wasn’t bad, just... I guess it’s comforting. To know that everything’s okay. I’m going to take a shower. Like everything’s normal.” She shrugged one shoulder. “I’m sure if I was seeing my own death, it’d be a lot more frightening.”
“It could be, and it could also be comforting. To know the way and moment of the end, could remove a lot of worry, you know?” He grinned at her. “Over the next few weeks, I am going to work with you, and do my best to give you as much control as possible.”
“Okay.” Zelda said, nodding. She had a lot to wrap her brain around. It was hard to think that now she was going to be able to control looking into the future. How much would she want to see? How much could she see? “Thank you, Nate. I... I can’t thank you enough.”
“You’re my friend, Zelda. What else am I going to do?” He gently clasped one of her hands. “As long as you’re here, I’ll be there for you, whatever happens.” he nodded.
“Thank you.” Now she was feeling like a broken record. Zelda let go of his hand and reached forward to wrap both arms around him for a tight hug. “Really. Thank you.”
He hugged her. “You’re welcome. You’re my friend, and I will do my best by you.” He nodded. That was, after all the right thing.
