Laura didn’t like to be in unfamiliar situations. Her life was full of them anymore, and it was beginning to wear down her previously bottomless cheerfulness. She understood intimately how the world she’d been in before worked, but this new one with its rules and requirements was difficult for her to wrap her head around. If she’d wanted something before she stole it or traded sex for it, and that was that. She couldn’t do that with information, and she needed to be educated to get anything like a real job.
So she was wandering the closest college campus, trying to wrap her brain around how to even get into the classes. She could hear and smell a million different things, some very familiar and some brand new. It wasn’t helping her feeling of being overwhelmed.
She touched the ring hanging from the chain around her neck, and her expression went from lost to determined. Jubilee thought she could do this, so she was going to, or at least give it her best effort. She didn’t want to disappoint her wife.
There was definitely a lot to take in, and even Yuna felt a little lost as she walked around the same campus. She'd done this before already once, but that had been long enough ago now that she wasn't really sure about the specifics anymore. Education, like so many other things, had changed.
She came across a very lost looking girl fingering a ring on a chain, and tried to smile at her encouragingly, "What are you looking for? Maybe I can help."
“I don’t even know,” Laura admitted. She gave Yuna a wry smile. “I’m trying to figure out how to apply here.” She had no idea how to do that at all.
"Do you know what courses you want to take here?" Yuna asked. She had a pile of booklets and pamphlets already in her arms, which she'd folded against her chest to keep from spilling out all over the place. The least she could do was point the girl to the admissions office, but it helped to narrow things down a bit.
“Photography! I want to take really nice pictures.” She motioned to her purse, which held her new digital camera. It was a good choice, Nate had given her lots of good information but she wanted to know more than the people taking pictures at JC Penny’s.
"Photography..." Yuna repeated to herself in a low mumble, nodding her head. She began fishing through the various booklets she'd picked up, "I've never been able to do things like that. I wish I had a more artistic eye sometimes... I think I might be okay with dancing, though I haven't tried much."
"Ah! Here we are!"
She fished a booklet out of her arms that had to do with various course schedules in the arts program, and handed it to Laura, "It looks like they have some extra-learning courses and then some kind of two year degree, too... I guess it depends on how much you want to learn."
Laura nodded and took the papers. “I have no idea.” She admitted. “Probably just classes? I don’t think I need a degree’s worth of stuff.” She really had no idea how college worked at all. She decided to look it up on the Internet when she got home. “What are you here for?”
"I'm... trying to figure out where to start out if I want to be a doctor," Yuna admitted, with a nervous smile. She hadn't quite made up her mind yet that this course of action was even plausible, considering how many years went into going to med school.
"I think some of the things that I learned while becoming a nurse still apply, but... I'm really... I don't know what I'm doing, at all."
Laura nodded. “Being a doctor is hard, isn’t it? On TV they say it’s hard.” Most of what she knew about education came from watching tv.
"I think... it probably is, yes." Yuna nodded, and went back to hugging all of her pamphlets, "I work with them as a nurse already, but they know things and get to do things that I never will, and don't always understand..."
She trailed off for a bit, and shook her head, "I don't think being a photographer is any easier, really. Not being a very good one, at least. I know some nature photographers are out there in bad conditions for hours, just waiting for the perfect shot."
Laura nodded. “I want to take pictures of people! I saw on some other forums that girls are afraid sometimes to get their pictures taken by new photographers because they don’t want to get molested, so I figured I could do that and then they won’t have to worry!” Though she would, of course, enjoy the show.
"Oh no, that's horrible! Photographers molesting them, really?" Yuna blinked her eyes a few times, wondering how something like that had passed beneath her notice for so many years. True, she didn't work in photography or fashion, but wouldn't something like that have been on the news at some point?
"I've never heard of that before... I think I must have been living under a rock these last few years."
Laura poked at a rock with the toe of her shoe. “It’s a problem for pin up girls and models like that.”
"That makes sense, of course, I just... I wish it wasn't. Or that it was something someone was doing more about than just you, I guess." Yuna replied, frowning a bit. The frown faded away into a smile, "But it's so admirable of you to want to help! Do you have pictures anywhere? That I could look at?"
Laura giggled and nodded, pulling out her cell phone. “Let me pull a couple up! I did a shoot for our website recently, but I’m not sure it’s very good. I think I could do better.” The poses were good, Jubilee looked gorgeous, but the lighting or the composition or something was off. Probably all of it, really. She showed Yuna one of the pictures, in which Jubilee had most of her clothes on.
"She's got some good energy that you were able to capture," Yuna said, after a few seconds of looking the picture over. It looked really good to her, though not necessarily 'professional', which was probably the part the other woman was struggling with, "I think... it's important to have a good base to improve on. You're doing really well already! I can't imagine how far you'll go once you take some classes."
Laura beamed at the praise. “Thanks! I keep hoping to make things look nicer, you know? Maybe get enough money to get real cameramen in and make our videos look more professional, too. Amateur stuff has its audience, but a moving camera means we can do better close ups and stuff.” She tucked her phone away, bouncing a little. “But being a doctor is way better, and I hope you get the chance to do it!”
"Oh, don't say that, please!" Yuna declared, shaked her head and then lowering it a bit, "We are all important, and we all have our part to play. I think... Doctors especially, sometimes, seem to think they're better than someone else because they do things like cure the sick and ailing, but..."
She trailed off and wrinkled her nose, "It's not about being better than anyone or more important. It's about helping them. We both just want to help people, right?"
Laura thought about that. “I guess so, huh? And doctors are scary, anyway.”
"I hope I'm not a scary doctor, though. I think... I want to be a pediatrician."
The thought had only just dawned on Yuna, but it sounded perfect. She grinned and nodded her head, "Yes. I'm going to help sick little children to feel better. That sounds really good, though... I have no idea where to start, either."
Laura nodded, because doctors for kids were a good thing, in theory, and Yuna wasn’t very scary. “I bet you’ll do a good job, you’re really nice.”
"Thank you. I'm really... very nervous about it." Yuna tucked some hair behind her ear, then smiled at Laura, "Did I get your name? I'm Yuna. We have to know each other's names if we're going to be taking classes at the same time! It's ... an unofficial rule."
Laura giggled. “Laura. I don’t think we’ll be in the same classes, unless you need to take classy pictures of kids for some reason.”
"Well, no, but we'll be... school... associates."
Yuna's words were awkward, but her smile was heartfelt. She bowed slightly, "It is an honor to meet you. ... You know what we should do, we should... go to admissions together! They could probably give us the information we need."
“Oh! Yes, that’s a good idea.” She smiled brightly. “Let’s go see if we can find it!”
