Sam was hoping McCoy wouldn’t be too busy as she was dropping in on him at the hospital unannounced. Lizzie seemed to be improving but she wanted to make sure that McCoy thought she was okay too. She knew her friend could be tricky about hiding things especially when she knew Sam would be on the lookout.
Finding out where the office was from a helpful nurse Sam arrived in front of his door and knocked.
McCoy was behind his desk with a huge stack of papers. It seemed like he always had a huge stack of papers to work on, especially when people were coming by to see him. He was buried in the stuff, but it kept him busy. Kept him from thinking too much. And that part was good.
He looked up from his work and gave a curious “Enter?” after the sound of the knock.
Hearing him reply Sam opened the door, “Hi, I hope I’m not disturbing you” she said as she entered the room, “The nurse at the desk said you wouldn’t mind” she added.
“Not at all.” McCoy said, closing the file on his desk. Anything to get him away from the mountains of paperwork. He stood and reached a hand out. “Leonard McCoy. I’m not sure we’ve met?” Had they? Had he actually shaken the hand of Elizabeth’s best friend?
“Oh umm briefly after the dragon incident but I imagine there were a lot of things on your mind then” and it had been a fleeting Hi and Bye moment as she had taken over watching Lizzie. “I’m Samantha Carter, Sam. Lizzie’s best friend and roommate” she added shaking his hand.
“That’s right. I had to run.” McCoy said, apologetically. “We’ve texted.” He added, remembering that with a nod. “Come on in and sit down.” He offered the seat across the desk from his own. “Is this just a social call or is there something I can help you with?”
"We have" she smiled, relieved he didn't seem to mind her dropping in. "Thank you" she said as she sat, "It's sort of an interfering best friend visit, just wanted to check that Lizzie is doing okay"
“Oh.” McCoy nodded as he slipped back down into his own seat. He nodded once. “I think she’s doing much better. After the Dragons, it was a bit... difficult.” He added, leaning back. “But she’s such a strong woman.”
“She is” Sam agreed, “I’ve encouraged her to speak to someone, professional I mean. I don’t know what she’s told you about her work for the UN and why she stopped but it was rather...traumatic. She’s not as bad this time around but I am worried”
McCoy shook his head. He didn’t know about the end of her working for the UN or what the trauma might be. And now he wanted to know--mostly so he wouldn’t do or say something careless and stupid and accidentally hurt her. “What happened?”
"She was shot on a diplomatic mission" Sam replied, "It shook her up a lot. She refused to leave the house, isolated herself from everybody, it took a lot of cajoling to convince her to see somebody. I saw signs of the same shock after the dragons so I wanted to make sure she wasn't acting out of character or anything"
“That explains a lot,” McCoy said, thinking about how scared she was about leaving the house, the broken mug over the knock at the door. He frowned just a little and shook his head. “I wish I’d known, or, I wish I’d put two and two together about the whole thing. Maybe I’d have been able to help her a bit better.”
Sam nodded, “I’m not surprised she didn’t say anything, it’s not something she likes to talk about, understandably. But I am sorry I didn’t come and see you sooner. It took me longer to recognise the signs this time round”
“Understandable.” McCoy said with a nod. “Well, now I know... hopefully I can help her more.” He was already planning on talking to her about the severity of her issues if it came to that. Hopefully he wouldn’t have to. He knew she was strong and resourceful. “Just being there seems to help ground her.”
“She’ll focus on the stability in her life so that means me, work, you - things she has some feeling of control over” Sam told him, “She’s promised me that she’ll talk to someone which helped a lot in the past. She’s an intelligent woman and since the UN incident she tends to admit things faster and seek help”
“Well, that’s good. I’ll make sure to be there if she needs me. But I don’t want to push--I don’t want her thinking that I’ve been conspiring with you about this. I don’t want her to think that we’re working against her behind her back.” McCoy didn’t want to do anything to make Elizabeth feel even more paranoid.
Sam shook her head, “Oh no, not at all. That wouldn’t help one bit. Really I just felt you should know so you aren’t going into anything blind” She was sure he wouldn’t say anything that could upset Lizzie but she just knew she’d feel better if he understood.
“Thank you for the head’s up.” McCoy said, nodding and thinking about it. “She’s really quite wonderful.” He added. He was pretty smitten. Reserved, jaded a bit from past experiences, but smitten nonetheless.
“You’re welcome” Sam replied before smiling and nodding, “She is and she’s happier since meeting you than she has been in a long time”
“Well, I’m glad to hear it.” McCoy said, nodding once and smiling still. It made him feel good that he’d been a positive influence on her life. He was really starting to hope that this was developing into something real, something meaningful. He didn’t want to rush into things, he had a daughter to think of. But he was very fond of her.
“If there’s anything else that I can do, please let me know.” He added, thoughtfully.
“I will” Sam replied, “Same for you” she smiled as she stood, “It was nice to meet you doctor”
“And you. Let’s make sure we don’t take so long between chats next time.” He said, referring to when Elizabeth was in the hospital after the dragon attack. He stood to shake Sam’s hand again. “Thank you for stopping by.”
“It’s a deal. I suppose we really should get to know each other better” she acknowledged, “Thank you for letting me interrupt your work. Until next time” she shook his hand before leaving the office. Happy in the knowledge that her friend had managed to find a good man.
