"“I ain’t ever gonna judge, Moonstar."
Who: Remy LeBeau, Dani Moonstar
What: Getting coffee after the reaper mess.
When: the day after this text message.
Where: At a coffee shop!
Ratings/Warnings: PG-13 for some mentions of alcohol issues and combat things. Triggers for the same. Really, Dani should just come with a trigger warning for the next 5 months.
Status: Complete!
Remy had told Dani he’d meet her at a coffee place out by where she lived, and he’d gotten here a little early. He was curious to sit down with her a little bit; apparently she’d lived here before he had, but he remembered her in the dreams right enough. Mostly later on. And he felt like he wanted to know the people in these dreams; he wanted to be familiar with what made them tick, as much as they’d let him.
For now he sipped his coffee, wishing for a little chicory, and waited.
Dani did remember that he'd arrived in Orange County at some point before she'd left. But they hadn't really had the time then to get acquainted like normal people, and they definitely hadn't had that time later on after she'd come back, either.
She arrived on time and got herself a coffee, noting that he'd already shown up. It made her want to check her watch to make sure she wasn't late, but she didn't. Instead, she waved at Remy and took a seat across from him.
"Hey."
Remy waved. “Hey, Moonstar.” He couldn’t help but smile; he’d waved with the hand that now wore a ring. “How you hangin’? You look like you maybe actually got some sleep since we got outta Vegas.” That was a good thing in itself; he knew it had affected nearly everyone.
"That was really crazy," Dani agreed, raising both of her eyebrows and nodding her head. She leaned back in her chair a bit, getting comfortable, and grinned at him, "Of course, if I'd known you were going to get married while you were out there, I would have tried to show up. I'm not sure which of you I should be congratulating more."
Remy chuckled. “We’d been talkin’ about it for a while. I wanted to do it up nice later on, but at the same time, after you help save the world, what the hell else you gonna do.” She looked surprisingly okay, for how much of a clusterfuck that had all been. “We gonna have a party for our friends sometime soon. You should come along; no booze, just juices and cake.”
There'd been a lot of healing up by Magius and the others after the initial battle, which certainly helped with looking unscathed. Her powers had been very ineffectual against the things, so a lot of her battles had been up close and personal, "Yeah, everything else seems kind of like... there aren't a lot of acts that follow that."
"That's one bad thing about all of this," she added, musing a bit, "We're going to get desensitized to things like being kidnapped or being in danger all the time. You know what happens after that. We start looking for fights to get our daily adrenaline rush."
The x-folk were nothing if not somewhat predictable. But after the hell they'd all been through, a party with juices and cake seemed like the kind of mundane that was awesome.
"I make some really great fake margaritas. I could help out with the party, if you want. Not that you need help when it comes to cooking, but..." she shrugged a shoulder, "Thought I'd offer."
Remy mimed a deep bow. “It’s good of you to do it, mam’zelle.” He smiled, but grew serious. “I do wonder sometimes if we gonna get used to it, yeah. I mean, God knows some of us already are.” He wasn’t naming names, but he knew people like Domino tended to run some extracurriculars. Never mind Logan.
He sat back. “You ain’t one of those, though, I’m guessing. Though you handle yourself real good in a fight, and that is fact.”
"Oh, I get a little antsy when I'm not busy, I'm not going to lie. But there's plenty of things to do. I like to stay fit, but I think I'd be just as good teaching kids archery and hunting my own game or taking care of horses or..."
Dani chuckled, "I guess I had a lot of free time on my hands to think about what else I'd do with my life. As long as I don't get locked up inside for too long I'm usually fine. You? You kind of seem like the type of man who makes his own fun."
“I seem to recall you worked at that ranch, oui? Candy - my wife” - he beamed, he couldn’t help it - “knows a lotta people who do. Seems like a good place to channel energy and be helpful.” Remy took a pull of his coffee. “Me, I keep busy.” It was probably a bad idea to tell Moonstar about his couple of nights where he’d gone out and liberated some ladies of their jewels.
It probably was, though liberating people of things and winning poker tournaments and generally being Gambit was exactly the thing Dani had been alluding to.
She took a long sip off of her coffee, unable to hide her own grin at Remy's happiness. It was infectious. The grin faded a bit as she replied,
"I still work there, yeah. Wrex..."
There were no secrets from Remy. Candy knew them all anyway, even though the woman would never tell them, "...I owe him big time, you know. You'd think nearly killing myself with alcohol would have been enough, but it took scaring the hell out of myself in Vegas to really do it. He was the first person I could think to call. He paid for me to get into a program. But it wasn't cheap at all, so I work at his ranch to pay him back."
Remy nodded. “Honestly, probably the best thing you could do. I mean, if you needed the help, so be it, but you have too much pride to just let him pay. This way you gonna pay your debt, but I bet you keep busy too. Them kids a handful.” He chuckled. “I ain’t ever gonna judge, Moonstar. The woman I love can barely look at alcohol, but it don’t make her some weakling.” One shoulder shrugged. “When you shot right past my face on that rescue mission, it felt like one of my dreams was real. You still got some hot shit.” He grinned a little wider.
The change of subject made Dani grin widely, and actually laugh. The rescue mission had been a lot of fun, circumstances aside, "Well, you're probably lucky that you didn't move a bit to the right, all things considered. I can't believe how good a shot I still am. It felt really nice to just get out there and throw down with you guys. Like... old times. And you certainly haven't lost your flair."
She saluted him with her coffee cup, "I'd choose you to have my back anytime."
“Would you believe that I never did nothin’ like that in this life before then?” Remy grinned a little shamefacedly. “I was doing all manner’a stuff in the dreams, but never had a chance for real. Just glad I didn’t fuck it all up.”
Dani raised her eyebrows in disbelief, "That was your first time, too? I guess we're both pretty good at pretending to know what the hell we're doing."
She darted her eyes to the side a bit, "I just acted like the me on all of those missions in the dreams. It seemed like the best way to handle it, and I didn't want to disappoint Logan."
“Couldn’t’a said it better.” Remy looked down. “Logan always knows what he’s doing, either that or he’s a better actor than ol’ Remy.” He finished off his coffee; he’d go for more in a second. “I just didn’t want him to be thinkin’ I couldn’t handle it; I could handle it. Still can.”
"Hell, it'd be pretty funny if all of us were going through the motions and no one wanted to say so. But I can't imagine Logan not knowing what to do." Dani tried to picture it, and shook her head. Nope, she really couldn't.
She chuckled a bit and smiled ruefully, "It's probably good that we can handle it. As long as we keep a balance between 'I can handle this' and 'I'm itching for some combat' I think we'll be okay."
“C’est vrai,” Remy agreed. She was right. “I mean, there’s ways to get your adrenaline that ain’t too dangerous. I know someone who likes to skydive. That kinda stuff. Surprised more of our people ain’t addicted to those.” Extreme sports seemed to fit the bill for adrenaline junkies, and most if not all of the X-people fit that description.
"I have never skydived in my life. Now I almost kind of want to."
Dani could agree that they were, a lot of them, complete adrenaline junkies. Especially Kitty - that girl was notorious for it in both worlds. She grinned, "Maybe a group skydiving outing. All of us jumping out of a plane together. Your wife can come."
“Dun’ know if Candy would come along, but I’d be game.” Remy grinned. “I ain’t scared of heights. Gambit ain’t scared ‘a too much.”
"Well she married you, so she's got to be pretty adventurous, right?" Dani joked. She couldn't really remember smiling this much, not since that one talk with Lorna. It was so good to be around people who wouldn't judge her.
She leaned over and grabbed up his empty coffee cup, "What are you drinking, Cajun? I'll buy the next round."
“Just plain ol’ black coffee. Wish I could get a little chicory.” Remy shook his head. That was one thing he hadn’t gotten back home, and he missed it. “Thanks, p’tite.”
"You have coffee at my place sometime and we'll make sure there's chicory in it," Dani replied, with a laugh, "Two black coffees, coming right up. And when I get back you can tell me all about how you and... Candy, was it? Met."
“That I can do.” Remy smiled, laughing when she promised him chicory. “You a good woman, Moonstar.” Despite all her problems, despite how she felt about herself. He liked her.
