Esme was very much looking forward to surprising her husband with a weekend away. Carlisle had been working so hard at the hospital that she felt he needed a break away from the house, away from everything. So she had made sure he wasn’t rota’d on for two days and had arranged for a taxi to pick him up straight from the hospital to bring him here.
She had his things in the small case with her own, including a cheeky new underwear set, and she was now making her way up the path to the B&B which looked simply perfect.
Theo liked to make sure that the B&B looked homey and comforting, but still hotel quality at all times. She was minding the greeting at the time Esme walked up, and she smiled at her arrival. “Good mornin’, how’re you?”
“Good Morning, I’m very well thank you. And yourself?” Esme asked, “You have a beautiful place here”
“Oh, I’m fine! Thanks so much. I’m real proud of her.” Theo kept smiling. “You’re onea the people online I begged into stayin’. It’s not tourist season for B&Bs - everyone’s out in Anaheim with the kids - so I’m glad you did.”
"You should be" Esme nodded, "It was perfect timing actually. I'd been wondering what I could do for Carlisle and this is amazing"
“Oh, thank you!” She was starting to go pink, and she motioned to Esme’s bags. “Can I help you with those?”
“That would be great, thank you” Esme replied, handing Theo the lighter bag, “It took me longer than I thought it would to choose clothes for us both” she laughed lightly as they moved inside, “ridiculous considering how long we’ve been married”
“Oh, every couple’s got one person in it who’s more particular than th’other,” Theo smiled. “How long have y’all been together? I admire people who make marriage work.”
"That's true" she nodded, "It'll be nineteen years this November" she smiled, "I can't imagine being without him. He's my other half in every way"
“Oh my gosh, that’s wonderful!” Theo’s jaw dropped. She’d barely lasted nineteen months with her ex-husband.
Esme laughed lightly, "Thank you" she replied, "We met at school and we've been together ever since"
“I met my ex while I was backpacking before I was supposed ‘ta leave for college. Didn’t quite work out. Him or the college.” She moved to grab Esme’s card key.
“Oh I’m so sorry to hear that” Esme replied, “It’s always such a shame when love doesn’t go the way you want. Though it seems you are doing well for yourself”
“I got the B&B in the divorce. And I’ve got a relationship now that means a lot to me, so I’d say things worked out downright decent for me.” She handed Esme the card key, showing her to her room.
“I’m so glad to hear things are working out for you. I mean I know we don’t know each other well but you seem like such a lovely young woman” Esme told her as she followed Theo to her room.
“Well, thank you. I’ve made a lot of friends by runnin’ the B&B, so I was hopin’ that I’d make another one today.” She smiled and opened the door for Esme, beaming. “Here you are.”
"You absolutely have" Esme replied with a warm smile. "Oh my goodness, how completely stunning. Its better than I could have imagined" the room was charming and Esme loved it.
Theo smiled. She was proud of her business. She’d managed to decorate each of the rooms in a different style, and she’d given Esme one of the cosy, not too flowery ones. So many B&Bs fell into the ‘looking like a grandmother’s house’ trap.
"Thank you so much" Esme said as she stopped looking around the room to smile at Theo.
“And don’t hesitate to let me know if there’s anything I can get y’all.” She smiled to herself, glad that Esme had come.
Esme nodded, "I will thank you Theo, you're very kind" She couldn't wait until Carlisle arrived, he was going to love it too.
