Who: Jess and Carol What: Putting a hole through the wall. Again. Where: Their place When: Tuesday morning Rating: PG Status: Complete
Jess had been sleeping better than she had been in a while. With the chemo finally stopping, she thought that she could go through a whole night without throwing up and being sick in general. She felt better. This time though she’d gone to bed and her hands wouldn’t stop itching. Weird. She fell asleep though eventually, but in the morning when she woke up they were still itching.
“Honey, do we have some cortisol or itching..” Jess had been calling out when there was a loud zapping noise. A giant bolt of electricity flew out of her hands and went right through the wall leaving a giant gaping hole.
“Shit.”
Jess sleeping better meant that Carol was sleeping better. It wasn’t just empathy. To be brutally honest, sharing the bed with a sick person meant the healthy person got about as much sleep as their lover did. She didn’t complain, though. She just tried to be supportive.
“Mmm..cori...?” The blonde mumbled, rolling over. Then the hair on her head stood on end and she flailed into the air, looking around for the attacker before realizing where it had come from. She landed next to the bed and stared at the hole in the wall. “...there goes the security deposit.”
Automatically Jess put her hands over her face and sighed. “Oh man I am so sorry.” And then she realized that rubbing her face probably wasn’t a good idea so she moved them and put them at her sides. “I have no idea what the hell just happened. My hands were itchy and then.. that. Electricity. Like in my dreams.”
"It'll be okay, Jess." She took her lover's hands and squeezed them tightly. "It could just be a one-off."
“Maybe but what if it’s not?” She glanced up at Carol and sighed. “What if I hurt someone? I don’t even know how it happened. Should I just always point my hands down at the ground just in case?”
“Maybe at first,” she admitted. “Remember how I kept breaking things? Even my plane? I was terrified of hurting you. I still treat you with kid gloves. But eventually..you’ll need to face it and accept it. Because you have to control it.”
Jess nodded a little and then looked at her hands. “You’re right. I mean it’s probably not a fluke. If it was a fluke, it would be nice. Great. One more crazy thing.” She looked at her hands and then took a breath. “How do you … figure out how to control something like that? Any ideas?”
“Target practice?” Carol kissed the tips of Jess’ fingers and then nuzzled them with her cheeks. “We need to set up a range. Some place safe where you can try to make the power happened.”
“Right. Target practice. That makes sense.” Now why hadn’t she thought of that? Ah well. Jess smiled back at Carol and nodded. “I guess uh.. out in the middle of nowhere. We can get some targets or something, right? Like cans on a fence.” She had no idea.
“When you get better at it, I can be a moving target. Or throw moving targets.” Carol might be a little excited about the idea. Not that she ever wanted Jess putting herself in danger - even if she could defend herself. But it was like they were sharing something that was special and unique.
Normally she would have flat out said no at that idea, but she knew that she couldn’t actually hurt Carol. “Yeah okay. When I get better.” Hey this was better than just being able to crawl on the walls and all of that other stuff. This was offensive and not defensive. Always good. “Let me get dressed and we can find a place.”
She grinned. “If you put your costume on it won’t stay on very long.” She loved the way it covered Jess’s body. Like a second skin. “It covers as much as my new one but is still a lot sexier...”
Jess stuck out her tongue at Carol. “Later! I mean maybe one day that will happen but let’s focus on me not looking like a doofus the first time, hm?” she smirked and shook her head. “Two seconds.” She went to get dressed in a regular outfit.
Still grinning, Carol pulled on something normal too. Just jeans and a black shirt. “Do you want to drive or fly?” Her eyes twinkled mischeviously. She had to stop herself from helping Jess with every little thing.
“Um.. well as long as you think that if my.. hand things go off again, it won’t startle you into dropping us from the sky,” Jess answered. She’d actually gotten used to being flown around. It was nice. But still she felt a little weak, so she didn’t mind too much that Carol babied her.
Carol picked Jess up damsel style, and kissed her. “I’ll never drop you. I’ll carry you until you need me not to.”
Jess snorted a bit and sighed. “Why do I let you do these things to me?” she kissed her back and grabbed the bag full of cans. “Come on then. Up up and away.”
Floating out the window, Carol flew up, then shot across the sky. She knew a spot that would work, and probably had plenty of targets for Jess to shoot at. It would be private. Private was always a bonus. The wind in her hair and the woman in her arms. Carol decided that if this was all life was, she’d be happy.
She hung on to Carol for dear life. Not that she thought her girlfriend would drop her, but it was better to be safe than sorry. Just in case. Finally when they landed, Jess let go and got on her feet. “My hair’s a mess.”
She ruffled it for Jess. "There. Now its a lot better."
There were rusty old tanks and cars all around them. "Let's see if you can hit the broadside of a tank."
Jess gave Carol a fake glare and sighed. “You’re awful.” Oh good though. Things were pretty empty and no one was around.
“Sounds good.” She kind of doubted it but they’d see. She lined up the cans on a car and then moved back a little. “I guess start close and then get farther back?”
“Start a little closer than that,” Carol said, looking a little worried. “You’ll get a spanking if you miss.”
“Promise?” she gave Carol a cheeky look and then got a little closer. She kept her hands out in front of her, facing the cans and away from herself. “Okay.. so.. concentrate, right?”
“Promise.” She rubbed at Jess’s back and nodded. “Focus on the buzzing. Draw it into your hand. Then let it go.”
Right. Focus on the buzzing. Inhaling a sharp breath, she slowly let it out and focused. The itching was building in her hands again, so she drew it into her hand and then wham, electricity shot from her hands and missed the car by a mile.
“Oops. Okay. Must .. focus.”
Carol, as promised, smacked Jess on the ass with all the gentleness she could muster. “Try again! I think you might have killed a cactus!”
Jessica jumped slightly, even though she knew it was coming and then laughed. “Shut up!” Right. Another breath. Inhale. Focus. She tried again and this time pointed her hands in the right direction and wham. She hit something!
“I did it!”
One of the cans was flying through the air, a smoking hole in the car just below where it had been sitting. Carol let out a woop. “Again!” She had an idea. If Jess could get another blast off quickly, she was going to start throwing moving targets.
She was just so happy that it had worked and she hadn’t hurt anyone. Jess held up her hands again and concentrated a bit and eventually her hands crackled with electricity and then bolted. Her aim was a little off that time but it was getting much easier. In fact she did it twice in a row to see if she could.
Grinning Carol flew over, picking up some cans. She flung one into the air, then the other. “There!”
Moving targets. Watching as they flew up in the air, she pointed her hands up at the bottles. Jess missed the first one by a bit, but by the second one, it was much better and she got it, though just barely. “More please.”
She nodded, throwing up one, then two, then three bottles. Then she threw up a rusted out car. It spun slowly through the air.
This time Jess waited and aimed more accurately. It was a pretty big target after all. She hit most of the bottles and then hit the car which kind of electrified it. “Jeeze. That’s kind of amazing.”
The car crashed the the ground. Carol cheered, and floated over to her lover. “More? Or want to take a break?” It was pretty hot and arid out here.
Jess looked quite pleased with herself. “Let’s take a break. I think I need to sit down.” She was really feeling better lately, but she didn’t quite know how that was supposed to go. “I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow.”
Carol nodded, and swept Jess into her arms. “Lets go someplace a little cooler. There was a town we flew over on the way here, we can get a beer or something.”
Sliding her arms around her girlfriend, she hugged her tightly. “God so much cooler. With air conditioning. Lots of air conditioning. And yes. Beer. Please for the love of God.” Jess gave her a kiss and settled in for Carol to take off.
Laughing, Carol took off. She would buy Jess all the beers, and probably something to eat. She was craving chicken wings. And by the way she nuzzled at Jess as they flew, craving certain other things, too.
