Esme was looking forward to catching up with Verity, she liked the young woman’s company and this time wouldn’t be so worried about her suffering from shock. She’d been relieved to see she had been unharmed during the recent attacks as she had been worried.
Making her way into the coffee shop almost exactly on time she stood looking at the vast array of drinks on the board whilst she waited.
Verity came in after Esme was already in line. She knew what she wanted, as she’d been craving a chai. It had some caffeine in it, but it wasn’t more than she was allowed to have per day. Her OBGYN said that a couple of cups of tea per day wouldn’t do any damage. But Verity was staying away from the Red Bull. Obviously.
She broke into a smile when she saw the older woman already there. “Hi!”
“Verity, it’s so good to see you” Esme said smiling as she carefully hugged her, “What can I get you? Then we can sit and catch up properly”
Verity wrapped her arms around her friend and gave a little nod. “It’s good to see you, too. The last time I was so flustered.” She smiled warmly, almost shyly. “You don’t have to buy for me! I can get it. I was dying for a chai tea. Ever since the last time we saw each other, I’ve had it on the brain.”
“Understandably so” Esme pointed out, “Don’t be silly, I don’t mind. Ah chai tea, I have to admit to having a bit of a weakness for that myself sometimes too” she moved slightly so she was now standing in line rather than to the side of it.
“It’s sweet and spicy.” Verity said, beaming. “I think I’d live on the stuff if there weren’t so many empty calories and caffeine in it.” She stepped forward in the line, too, up to the register to order, then let Esme treat. She vowed silently to get the next coffee date. “I might have to live on it after the baby arrives.”
“But if you live on it you may lose the pleasure derived from drinking it” Esme pointed out before they ordered, she deciding upon a caramel latte. “Strong black coffee I recommend once the little one arrives. I think it’s how my son and daughter-in-law cope” she half joked.
“Oh, yeah, that’s a good point. Too much of a good thing.” Verity agreed with a nod. A playful one. Of course she wouldn’t seriously consider living on the stuff. But still. It was a fun thought. “Yeah? Your grand-daughter...?” Verity couldn’t quite remember. They’d only talked the once, right? Verity could claim pregnancy brain on this one. “...How old is she again?”
“That’s right” Esme nodded, they had indeed only met the once and thought Esme tended to gush about her children and grandchild it was more in general terms than specifics. “Nessie is almost seven months now” and how time flies.
“That’s when it starts getting really fun, right?” Verity asked, grinning. Her brother and sister-in-law had two kids, but they were like, 10 now. So Verity barely remembered the first year. “It’s been so long since I’ve spent time with babies... I don’t know if I’ll even remember how to hold one.”
“Lots of fun” Esme nodded, “Starting to want to get into everything, or get everything into her mouth anyway” she grinned. “Oh you’ll be fine. I look after Nessie at least once a week so if you wanted I could bring her along with me next time, then you can see you haven’t forgotten anything at all”
“...are you sure? Her parents wouldn’t mind if I met her?” Verity asked. She was obviously terrified, excited, thrilled, nervous... meeting up with a tiny little person would probably help considerably.
“Oh of course not” Esme assured her, “Nessie loves meeting new people, and I think she’ll love you” She knew Bella and Edward wouldn’t mind, they trusted Esme and knew she’d do anything for Nessie.
“Okay, then. That sounds like a date.” Verity said, giving Esme a grin. “We’ll plan for the same time next week, then.” She lifted her drink and sipped from it. “How are the art class preparations coming along?”
“Perfect” Esme agreed, already looking forward to showing off her granddaughter. “Really well actually, I should be ready to release a schedule soon, see how much interest I get” she smiled, “I was toying with doing a course but I think it might be too much time for people to fit in so I’m going to do 4 or 6 hour taster sessions”
“Wow. That sounds great. I think the OC needs a little more art.” Verity gave a smile. “I’m not very artistic at all, I’m afraid.” She added, sipping again from her drink. She couldn’t help it. It was so delicious.
"You should come along, you might surprise yourself" Esme told her before taking a sip of her own drink, "And as long as you enjoy it I think that is the main thing" You didn't have to be amazing at it to enjoy drawing or painting.
“Oh, no, I don’t think I’d surprise myself,” Verity said with a chuckle. “I’m pretty sure that I’d surprise you, though. You’ll finally get to meet someone with absolutely zero artistic ability.” She set her drink down. “I get really frustrated trying to do art.” Though, she did some when she did custom, screen-printed t-shirts at the shop.
“I still think you’re doing yourself an injustice” Esme told her, “Frustration isn’t good though, that makes things worse” she added.
“Yeah, definitely. That’s why I tend to stay away from things that are artistically creative. Give me a puzzle, I’ll solve it. Give me a room, I can organize. But a blank canvas? I get all choked up and start having panic attacks.”
“Oh my goodness” Esme said, “In that case I definitely won’t pressure you. Obviously your creative outlets are different to mine” she smiled, “Before I had children I wasn’t overly organised but you really need to be with school and work and everything. So you’re ahead of the game there”
Verity nodded. “Well, it takes all kinds. I appreciate art very much. I just can’t do it on my own,” she said, giving a gentle shrug. “I’d love to see your work, though. Anytime you’ve got a show, make sure I know!” Organizing was kind of her thing. It’s what she worked on most at the Twins’ shop. “Thanks. I know I’m going to have to be. I don’t have any delusions about how easy being a single mother is going to be.”
“I haven’t shown my work in a long time” Esme told her, “I’m not sure there would be a lot of interest but I’m more than happy to show you the work I’ve done. I have a studio at home” she smiled, Carlisle had insisted on it.
“It will be difficult but you won’t be alone. You have friends around to help and if you ever need anything you can always come to me. I’d hate for you to struggle because you didn’t want to ask”
“That’d be nice. Maybe next time we meet it can be at your place?” Verity suggested. “I’ll bring the coffees.” She added, breaking into a smile. The idea that she was alone... well, she’d have to get control over her fears. “Thank you. I know, I just... thank you.” She said, giving a little shrug.
“Excellent idea” Esme nodded, it would be easier if she had Nessie too. “You’re welcome dear” she said patting Verity’s hand. She really was a lovely girl.
