Where: Diagon Alley Jewelry Store
What: Shopping for a promise ring!
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete
Sam knew that he wanted to get Deryn something special. It took a really strong girl to put up with all the shit he’d thrown at her lately, and he wanted to prove how much that meant to him. He was thinking about jewelry. A ring. Not an engagement ring, but an “I love you, and when we’re ready, we’ll do this” kind of ring. A pre-engagement ring?
Anyway, he had met up with Tonks at the coffee shop near the jewelry store, and they were now walking toward it, coffees in hand.
Tonks had been more than happy to help Sam find something perfect for Deryn, they were both very sweet friends of hers after all and she wanted to see them happy. Of course Tonks thought they should just get married but she may be biased on that one.
“So anything at all in mind?” she asked, since he’d had time to think since their text conversation, “Gemstone color or plain or anything like that?”
“No, nothing specific. I feel like if I see it, I’ll know it.” Sam said, turning to pull open the door to the jewelry store and let her in first. “Not an engagement ring, but something else. Something just as meaningful.”
Tonks nodded, “I know what you mean” she said smiling her thanks before entering the store, “Kind of like a lightning bolt moment. Okay, meaningful ring. I’m sure we’ll come up with something perfect”
“Good.” Sam was smiling shyly as he lumbered into the shop. Let’s face it; the guy was huge. Tall and broad shouldered. There was a reason his nickname was moose. He moved to the right, walking along the case of jewelry, looking very much like a bull in a china shop. Only twice as nervous.
Tonks was used to tall, big guys after all she was engaged to Mac but when they entered the shop she suddenly realised Sam really was quite tall himself. Deryn must get a crick in her neck looking at him, although she would bet that they looked quite sweet together. “Don’t worry” she told him with a pat on his arm, “Relax, you’ll be fine”
It was funny how small Deryn was in comparison. Anyway, Sam gave Tonks a sheepish smile. “Is it that obvious?” He really wanted to get his girlfriend something she’d like.
“To me it is” Tonks told him, “But I grew up with boys so I find you easy to read” she teased lightly. She’d had great practice with Fred and George, you had to learn to read those two otherwise they’d be pulling endless pranks on you. It also came in handy with her job. “I’m pretty sure that if you chose something you’d like to see her wearing then she’ll love it”
Sam gave a little laugh. “Well, so long as it’s not making things awkward,” he said, shaking his head. “All right. Let’s have a look, then, shall we?” He said, and turned to look through the glass cases filled with jewelry. There were pearls, but he decided straight away that he didn’t like those.
“Not at all” she waved off the concern, “Yes let’s” Tonks didn’t like the pearls either they were too old and stuffy for Deryn. “I like the ones with a gemstone, not too many though” she added, some had loads and it was just a bit too much.
Sam nodded. Those got pricey, too. He moved on to look at some silver jewelry, Claddaugh rings and whatnot, but didn’t find anything there that was Deryn. “I think she’s a yellow gold girl. Not silver or white gold.” He mused.
Tonks nodded, “I agree. It’s brighter and more like Deryn. Something sweet looking too” she was a complete sweetheart after all and quite delicate or seemed that way at the very least.
“Yeah. She’s really sweet. It wouldn’t do to have her wear something too spikey or swirly, or covered in gemstones.” She was a simple woman, and Sam loved her very much for it. “I really think a ring is the way to go.”
"Absolutely" Tonks replied, "If that's what feels right then go with your gut" she smiled at him, "ooo these are pretty yet simple" she found the less gaudy section.
Sam came over to where Tonks was looking. “Yeah, these are better. Yellow Gold, simple, no frilly bits or excessive gems...” The designs were elegant and classic. He was pleased. “What do you think?”
“Perfect” she said looking over them, “Now you just need to find the...” she dropped off her sentence as one caught her eye. She looked at Sam smiling as she pointed to it in the case.
Sam leaned over when she trailed off, and his eyes followed where she was pointing. “Oh, wow.” It was absolutely perfect. The perfect ring. He waved down an employee and motioned for the ring.
Tonks smiled as Sam called over the server. Out of the case it was even prettier and looked delicate without actually being which meant she could wear it without fear of damaging it. "Its beautiful"
“Oh, Tonks, this is.... perfect.” He said, accepting the ring from the employee woman. He turned it over in his fingers, inspecting it. It looked delicate, but still strong--much like Deryn herself. It seemed like the perfect thing--the perfect ring. It was beautiful. “...I’ll take it.”
Tonks clapped delightedly when Sam said he would take it, "She's going to adore it" she told him, "It really is perfect"
Sam worked out how to pay for the thing with the jeweler, and made arrangements should they need to have it re-sized. Then he turned to Tonks with the box in a little bag in his hand, looking both excited and terrified about the whole ordeal. “Well?” Now he felt like he needed a drink. Something stronger than an iced latte.
Luckily Tonks totally got that, "Well done" she nodded, "Your first jewelry shopping trip and it was pain free. Now to a bar so we can have a celebratory beer" she grinned.
Sam gave a laugh. “All right. Let’s.” He turned to head with her out of the shop. He felt the ring in the bag, heavy in his hands. It was already burning a hole in his proverbial pocket. “God, I could go for that beer.” How did it feel like the hard part was over, and yet still lay before him at the same time?
Tonks laughed, “You did do well, no freaking out or panicking at all” she smiled patting his arm, “And you found the perfect ring. I’d say that was a most successful trip and you definitely deserve that beer”
That had Sam chuckling again. “Well, there was some panicking. You just didn’t get to see it all. And I’m sure there will be more to come.” He led her out of the shop and down the street. There was a bar about a block and a half down where they could grab a quick beer, then go their separate ways. “I’m buying. It’s the least I can do to thank you for keeping me sane.”
“Okay well the panicking was well controlled shall we say” Tonks teased, “I’m not sure I did all that much but I’m never one to turn down a beer”
“Good. I’m glad I asked you instead of AJ. She keeps pestering Deryn about when we’re going to get married. I’m starting to worry she might be a bad influence.” Sam said, playfully, then pulled open the door for Tonks to head into the bar ahead of him.
“She just wants to see everybody as happily married as she is” Tonks told him, “Have you told her you’ve discussed it? I’m sure she’d leave you alone if she knew” she entered the bar with a smile of thanks.
“I haven’t. I imagine that Deryn will if she wants AJ to leave her alone. You could subtle-y mention it sometime. Just in case she’s got any funny ideas.” He said, moving straight up to the bar to order a couple of beers.
Tonks nodded, “Consider it done. Mac and I probably didn’t help by getting engaged, we made her worse I reckon” she smiled, it was the best thing she’d ever done though saying yes to Mac.
Sam chuckled. “Yes, well... everything in due time.” He lifted his beer bottle from the bar and clinked the neck against hers. “Cheers. And thanks again. For everything.”
"Indeed" she agreed, "You're welcome. Anytime" and she smiled as they drank their beer.
