"I wasn’t trying to get you to buy me some."

Ratings/Warnings: PG, pretty much. These guys are basically just cute.
Status: Complete!
Things were slowly returning to normal in the OC. Faith was running deliveries again, and she stopped in a coffee shop to refuel. It was nice to just run and putter around on her scooter without worrying about some blue crazy person attacking her.
It was definitely good to return to some semblance of normal life. Yuna had returned to driving her own car back and forth to work instead of bumming a ride from Ben or Magius, which meant that she felt more free to go places afterwards or during her lunch.
Today, though, was a rare day off, and she was enjoying some time out of her apartment. She'd decided to do some shopping as a form of therapy, and what better way to start off a trip than with some coffee? Apparently everyone else had had the same idea, too, and she patiently waited in line while looking over the menu.
The thing that Faith ordered had so many shots of espresso it was liable to give most people a heart attack. She topped it off with extra whipped cream and some shots of vanilla and caramel.
She burned a lot of calories!
She turned, smiling at the next person in line. “Try the scones.”
"Oh, thank you for the advice!" Yuna replied, bowing her head just slightly. Ever since the dreams had started she'd caught herself nearly bowing over completely when people offered her advice or instruction. The dream world was... very polite. It reminded her of Japanese culture in many ways.
"Does it matter which scone, or are they all equally delicious?"
She tilted her head. “I like the blueberry myself, but everyone’s tastes differ. I’ve been needing more and more energy lately. Something sugary helps.”
"Oh, I understand... we were working nonstop during the fighting. Sugary things do help, though I think it's important to balance them out with things like proteins. It's better, too, to eat natural ones - smoothies are great for that."
Yuna looked over the various scones as she stepped up to the counter, and decided to stick with what she knew was good, "I'll have your largest iced coffee, please... two shots of caramel and four of vanilla, with a hint of raspberry if you have it. And two of those blueberry scones."
The person behind the counter took her money and packaged up her scones for her, then instructed her to step off to the side for her coffee, much like she'd previously instructed Faith. Yuna stepped aside, towards Faith, and held her bag up, "One for you, if you want to stay and eat with me."
Faith smiled sheepishly. “I wasn’t trying to get you to buy me some. But I won’t say no.” She looked at her watch. “I’ve got time, and I’m hoping it clouds over a bit, could use a break in the heat.”
And you know, Yuna was really nice.
"Oh, no, I didn't think you were! It's just... It's actually embarrassing to say this, but I don't seem to have the time to make too many friends, and you're this rare person who actually stops to talk to someone in line with you. I'd like to get to know you better." Yuna smiled sheepishly as she spoke, then nervously tucked some hair behind her ear.
Extra super nice. If Faith was the type to crush easily, she’d start right now. Still, she smiled. “Since you asked so nicely, lets have a seat.”
"Well," Yuna giggled and motioned to the coffee counter, "We should probably grab our coffees first."
“That’d be a good idea. I’m Faith.” Faith moved to pick up her coffee and then stepped aside so that Yuna could get hers. She took a sip and closed her eyes. “Oh this’ll do it.”
Yuna grabbed her own (much less deadly) coffee and headed for a booth, sipping at it as she went and groaning a bit without realising it, "Oh I really needed this. Everything's been so... busy, lately."
Exhausting, is what she meant to say, but thought better of it. She thought she'd done a bad job of trying to stay cheerful lately, and was trying even harder now, "It keeps things from getting boring at least. That's probably why you needed so many shots of espresso in yours?"
After a pause, she blinked, and bowed her head a bit, "And I'm Yuna! Sorry, I should have said that first! It's a pleasure to meet you."
The coffee wasn’t deadly. The coffee was just right, Faith decided. Strong and energetic! “Busy, yeah...that’s one word for it. Would like it to not be that busy ever again.” She couldn’t help but smile at Yuna’s little bow. “Pleasure is mine.”
"Oh..." Yuna blushed a bit, uncertain if Faith's intentions were more than friendly. It was rare that people ever flirted with her, and her radar wasn't that well developed.
"We live here in Orange County, so I think the likelihood that it gets that busy again is... somewhat higher than most places. I think I'm trying to make my peace with it."
Faith wasn’t flirting, at least not intentionally. She was picky with her relationships (all one that she’d been in, and that had been... a little skeevy if one thought about it. Not that she cared) and she didn’t flirt all that often.
“It’s likely. I’ll just have to practice my running skills.” She grinned.
"Do you run professionally?" Yuna asked, while breaking off a piece of her scone. It was soft and crumbly, and the icing on it was such a thin glaze that Yuna thought it might have been covered in frosted glass on the top.
She put the piece in her mouth and spent a few moments experiencing food nirvana.
“You could say that. I’m a courier, and I spend a lot of time using alternate routes of travel. It involves a lot of running...” She picked up her own scone, distracted by the way Yuna ate that scone. She took a bite, and experienced food nirvana herself.
It was the best scone she'd ever had in her life, and she'd had plenty of scones. One could say that medical professionals practically lived on baked goods and coffee.
"MMm. You're right, that really is a wonderful scone. So, now, you're a courier? Do you use one of those bikes, too, or just the running?"
“Scooters sometimes,” Faith replied, licking her lips and looking down at her drink. “A car. Mostly I run.”
"I'm really glad to hear that it's not the bikes. I'm always so scared for those people, because... well, they're encouraged to be faster, so they do crazy things, and it's just going to end in disaster I think..." Yuna trailed off, and frowned a bit, "I guess you're just as likely to get into trouble running or on a scooter."
“I wouldn’t mind a motorcycle,” Faith admitted. “But when I want to go faster than my feet I have my car for that. It was a gift.” She was proud of that muscle car. 68 Cobra hard top, red. “Considering some of my short cuts, I probably would.”
"Well... just be careful, then." Yuna replied, while pulling off another piece of scone. She felt a little ridiculous, scolding someone she'd only just met, "If you couldn't tell I'm ... I work in the medical industry, I'm an RN, so I tend to scold people. I think it comes with passing the exams."
“I’ll be careful. Thank you. I’m a little appreciative of that actually. Not everyone is so considerate, Yuna.” She finished her own scone, and licked her fingers.
"Do you really? I thought maybe... I was being a little annoying. I worry about things too much, maybe. I'm always telling Ben to be more careful when he's out there, or texting Rikku to make sure she remembered to bring an umbrella when it rains."
Yuna laughed at herself a bit, "They're going to start comparing me to some nagging auntie!"
She couldn’t help but laugh at the mental image. “Well, I should get going before I start calling you my nagging auntie. Though to be honest, I wouldn’t mind.” She winked at Yuna.
“It was really nice meeting you.”
"It was really nice meeting you, too," Yuna responded, with a smile. She got up from her seat so that she could say goodbye to Faith the polite way, then quickly jotted her number down on a napkin, "You could text me sometime, if you ever want to get... scones again, or if you need help with anything."
Faith took Yuna’s number, unable to help the flush that creeped across her face. “Maybe I’ll take you up on that offer.” She folded the napkin and put it in her pocket, zipping it up to make sure it was safe and secure. After she’d left, and started to jog towards her destination, her heart was pounding, but not entirely because of the exertion.
