entirely</i> sure that tonight was the night, but she was fairly confident. She may or may not have been the most mature of girls, definitely wasn’t the most experienced, but she knew what she felt in her heart. She loved Link, and she wanted to be with him. As not-good as her last experience was, they couldn’t all be like that, right? Or else people wouldn’t keep doing it.
ANYWAY. She was on Link’s front step, holding a small overnight bag, and trying to calm her nerves. She was terrified and thrilled, anxious and excited. Her heart was thundering almost painfully, and she was having a little trouble catching up with her breath. This may be a very mild panic attack.
Link had prepared for Zelda’s overnight in his own way, but in similar fashion, cleaning the house with copious amounts of anxiety. It wasn’t even that the house was particularly dirty; he just needed something to keep his mind occupied. Otherwise, it wanted to run in circles. He hadn’t quite known what to expect of their last “sleepover” and it had ended up being quite tame. But things had changed since then.
And even though he believed Zelda when she said she wanted to take this step with him, he still couldn’t quite shake the fear that she might feel overwhelmed at any point, and wish she hadn’t changed her mind.
And there was also the matter of wanting to make sure whatever he did was so good and enjoyable for her that she forgot all the bad stuff from before.
Yeah. Lots on his mind.
But he had to open the door and let her in, that was for certain.
Zelda looked up when the door opened. Her heart was still thundering, but the sight of Link standing there in the doorway calmed her a little.
"Hi." She said, the smile spreading across her face was bright and warm, even as nervous as she was. She stepped forward and went up on her toes to kiss him.
Link’s hands touched Zelda’s hips as she did that. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the kiss. Her presence made everything a little better, even if he wasn’t going to get rid of his worries any time soon.
He pulled her into the house. “No cows to milk tonight.”
Zelda nodded, breaking into a little smirk. "A night without chores. Whatever will we do with ourselves?" The nerves were still strong, but her excitement level was growing. "I hope you've got some form of entertainment planned." She was teasing. Flirting.
Link chuckled nervously. It came out like, “Heh heh. Heheheh.” He cleared his throat. “Er, I have movies and food... no hot tub, unfortunately.”
“Movies and food sound good.” Zelda said. Her hand sought out one of his as they stood in the entryway. “Or... y’know... just sitting. On the sofa.” She wasn’t sure that she could eat right now. Her stomach was full of butterflies.
Link automatically wondered if Zelda was giving him some kind of signal right there, that she was hoping something would happen tonight. It was a shame he sucked when it came to signals. Then again, it was a given they would make out. The movies were just a means to an end. And Link really wasn’t sure how making out wouldn’t end up leading to more.
He took a breath. “You want anything to drink?” he asked, turning toward the kitchen.
Now that they both knew that they wanted more... it was pretty much a given that things would lead to things. The question was, what kind of things? How? Would she get scared? Would he want to take his time? All the unknowns with only a few certainties were making Zelda’s tummy twist.
She nodded in response to his question. “Sure. I’ll... I’ll have whatever you’re having.” Because that was easier than trying to figure out what she wanted.
Honestly, Link needed a beer, but he wasn’t sure Zelda really wanted that. He just wanted to relax himself, not get them wasted. “Uh... is water good?” he asked over his shoulder, as he entered the next room.
“Sure.” Zelda moved around to the sofa and sat down, waiting for him to come back into the room. She set her overnight bag down at her feet, and peeled her shoes off. They were absolutely to-die-for sandals, but they dug into her skin if she wore them too long. Ah, the price we pay for fashion.
He reappeared with two glasses of water, handing one off before taking a seat beside her. There were end tables to rest the glasses on, and Link placed his there and picked up the movies he’d dug up. They were all on VHS and they were all pretty random. The Fox and the Hound, Young Frankenstein, Dumb and Dumber, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? ...It struck Link then that none of them were especially romantic.
Zelda sat up when he came back into the room and accepted the glass. “Thanks.” She said, sipped once, and set it aside. She turned her full attention to him and curled her knees up under herself on the sofa. “...VHS tapes?” She asked, breaking into a grin. “Really?”
Minus his computer, he didn’t have a DVD player. His television didn’t even do cable. The video game console beneath the set was an original Nintendo. Link shrugged, looking and feeling a little sheepish. “Yeah, I’m not exactly on the cutting edge of technology.”
Smirking gently, Zelda lifted her hand to turn his jaw a little, pulling his face toward hers to steal a quick kiss. "Do you have a radio?" She asked. "We can listen to some music. Maybe do some dancing?" She definitely wasn’t above dancing in the middle of the living room. With or without music.
“Oh, um...” Link turned and scanned the room. Then, he looked upward, like he was peering through the ceiling. “Yeah, hold on.”
A quick job up the steps and Link reappeared with his bedroom clock radio.
Zelda sipped from her water while he was upstairs, and then stood up to meet him with the radio. “Perfect!” She beamed. She was thinking that some music might loosen them up. Lighten the mood. Make her forget temporarily about what she--what they--wanted to do tonight.
A moment later the radio was plugged in and Zelda was tuning in to her favorite Top 40 station. A DJ was just finishing talking about a contest they were running, then a song came on... “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood. Zelda thought it okay to dance to, she was thinking about a slow dance, rather than her normal bouncing around.
Link had never been to a prom or a school dance, but his mom had taught him some dances from when she was younger. Still, they weren’t exactly useful in this situation. He moved toward Zelda somewhat awkwardly. “You’re gonna have to show me... heh heh...” He drifted back into nervous laughter.
Zelda grinned bashfully. She stepped over closer to him, then took his hands and put them on each of her hips. Her own arms lifted to wrap around his shoulders. She’d danced with men before, and girls, at the clubs and at parties. But this felt different. A bit more shy, a bit more meaningful. Her hips ground against his, slowly, swaying side to side.
For all his lack of experience, Link fell into the motion quite easily. Then again, he’d always been a limber, physical person. After a minute or so, he looked and even felt quite natural, and comfortable enough to smile. He dipped his lips toward Zelda’s forehead and lingered there for a kiss.
Zelda’s eyes fell closed when his lips touched her forehead. She felt a deep sigh escape her in a rush. At the same time all of her nerves were calmed, and heightened. He made her feel both comfortable and excited. Butterflies. She stayed there against him, swaying, even as the next song came on. It wasn’t nearly as slow to dance to.
“You know,” Link murmured, “This is sort of my first dance. Real dance.” He chuckled softly against her blonde hairline.
"Do you like it?" Zelda asked, grinning softly. One of her hands found the back of his neck.
He didn’t reply with words. He just nodded, looking beyond Zelda’s eyes into some distant memory of her seated upon a throne. He swayed in step with the Princess of Hyrule.
“...Sometimes, I still can’t believe that we found each other,” he finally said, sounding as dreamy as he felt.
Zelda swayed with him, her arms wrapped up and around his shoulders. It was relatively innocent and gentle. Unassuming. Neither was pushing for more, just content to be in the moment. But Link’s words made Zelda feel a little insecure. She was nervous that he was putting her up onto a pedestal where she wasn’t sure she could live up to his expectations.
“Of course we did,” she said, her cheeks going pink as she looked into his eyes. She hoped, in vain, that her expression didn’t betray her fears. “How could we not?”
Because in my dreams, we keep getting torn apart. But Link didn’t want to say this aloud. He chose to kiss her again instead, this time lowering his lips to her jaw and pressing against the hollow of Zelda’s cheek. He breathed in whatever sweet smell it was that hung around her hair, some perfume or maybe no more than shampoo. Whatever it was, it was heavenly.
Zelda was just a little troubled, though being so close to Link helped to ease her concerns. She closed her eyes, letting him hold her. It felt wonderful to be wrapped up in such strong arms by someone she loved so much. Finally she turned to press her lips against his cheek.
Ennough beating around the bush. Link finally kissed Zelda’s lips. He felt lightning go straight to his heart. And enjoyed it.
Zelda returned his kiss. She felt electricity bolt through her, too, undeniably from the excitement she felt. A little, excited giggle escaped her into his mouth.
There was a decisive shift in Link’s mind, in the way he was thinking about the situation they were in. He felt calmer and more aware of his surroundings, though his heart was beating faster than ever. It’s going to happen... he said to himself, while still kissing her, and he felt very sure of it.
Zelda had no idea what she was doing, but she knew the steps. And one step was that she needed to lose some clothes. Her hands released him and she started to unfasten the buttons on her blouse. It was difficult to do while kissing, but she managed, then pushed the fabric down over her shoulders. And, of course, it got caught at her elbows. She was trapped in her own shirt!
Link’s peaceful feeling went ever so quietly out the window, replaced by new butterflies and general, What do I do?! anxiety. “Er... um.. er...” He made awkward, throaty noises as he tried to help her.
Zelda laughed an embarrassed laugh, then turned around so he could tug the shirt down off her arms. Funny how in her excitement and nerves she forgot how to use a shirt. Her bra underneath was white cotton. Plain. Nothing extraordinary or sexy tonight.
In Link’s opinion, there were no such thing as a plain bra. They were all pretty sexy, as defined by their function. His hands shook a little. It had been a long time for him, and he was still a young man without much experience. At least, that was that his brain kept reminding him.
Zelda got her shirt off her arms with his help. She turned back around, and gave a small shiver that had nothing to do with the temperature in the room. She was smiling shyly, and moved to kiss him again.
“Do you... you want to go upstairs?” he asked, breathily. Link’s voice had gotten caught somewhere deep in his throat, maybe as far down as his chest. Breathing had become pretty difficult.
Zelda swallowed. She shivered again, but nodded. "Yeah. Yes. Please?" She was excited, nervous, and a little... horny. It was a sensation she wasn't used to.
Her eagerness did a something to calm him again. For a few moments at least. Long enough for Link to take her by the hand and lead her upstairs. To his room. Where his bed was. Okay, calmness sort of gone now. In their other world, this was the makings of a real scandal: the princess and one of her knights!
Link had cleaned his room. A lot. Dusted, scrubbed it, and then lit a candle to hide the smell of cleansers. The scent that hung in the room was a sweet vanilla.
Zelda loved the room. Link's room. It was clean and smelled nice. She wondered how much work he put in to make it look nice. She also wondered how many other girls he brought home. It made nerves bubble up within her again.
She sat down on the bed and gave him a shy smile.
The look was enough to bring Link to his knees right there. Truly, this was like something right out of a daydream. He closed the door and tottered for a moment, unsure what do with himself. Well, probably... er....
Link walked to his dresser and opened the top drawer, and then he pulled out a box of condoms. Unopened, for the record. He’d had to go out and actually buy some. "I, um... well, I have these. Yeah.”
"Oh. Good. Because... we'll need those." She said, unable to stop the shy smile. She was rather pink. "Can I... see?" She'd never held a box of condoms before.
“See?” Link repeated. Well, if she wanted to. He wasn’t sure why. Maybe she was looking for something specific. To be honest, he just purchased something that looked trustworthy. Because even though Zelda had said “having a baby” was on her bucket list, he really didn’t to start the process prematurely.
Definitely not now. That's why they call it a bucket list. Things you want to do before you die. Not things you want to do right now . She reached forward abd accepted the box from him, then looked down at it curiously. She read the front of the box, then set it aside on the bed and turned her attention back to him. "So. That's ready."
It was unromantic, dealing with such things. Link didn’t feel especially comfortable saying much about it. It was what it was. For now, he sat beside her on the bed. For a moment or so, he just looked at her. He took a breath. “You’re so beautiful.”
If she'd been pink before, it was nothing on how pink she went at those words. She smiled very shyly, her eyes tearing from his to look down at his hand on the bedspread between them. "Thank you." She'd been told she was beautiful before, but it never made her feel as shy, as pleased, as flattered as when Link said it.
He touched his lips to her cheek and brought them to her ear. “Adorable, really. Sweet and... just beautiful.” He threaded his fingers between hers on top of the bed.
"You make me feel beautiful." Zelda's eyes fell closed and she nuzzled her face against his, much like a cat in need of some petting. Her hand squeezed his. Her next question was shy and serious. "Am I as beautiful as the princess in your Dreams?"
Link pulled back, just a bit, ever so slightly confused by the question. “Zelda. You are the princess from my dreams.”
She'd been wondering if there was a difference. Link was almost exactly the same, only his ears weren't as pointy. But Zelda was a little worried that she wasn't-- couldn't be --as amazing as the princess from his dreams. "Are you sure? I don't want to... disappoint."
His lips floated back to her cheekbone. He thought about Hyrule Castle and a woman who had magic coursing through her veins, even before she came to know it. And he, as well. “No. This is... the way it was always meant to be.”
Goosebumps rose along her arms again, and another purely emotional shudder rippled through her. Zelda gave a nod, then turned to catch his lips with her own. His words were echoing in her mind. The way it was always meant to be.
