They call it the cold fire. Those who can produce the blue flame exhibit greater control, creating more efficient and intense flames that glow blue-hot.
It's this same control and coldness that allows the generation of lightning.
Azula's heart was cold. Her control over herself and her body was perfect. The chi flowed through her and from nothing came fire. The fire danced around her, casting everything in an intense blue light, and for one of the few times in her life, she felt genuine joy.
She moved through the forms by rote, her body knowing where to move next. A stream of fire, an arc of flame and then from her belly the heat and the girl breathed blue fire.
Her teachers were impressed, and terrified. She learned something more devastating.
This form became rote. The energy effortless.
Not a hair out of place as she cast lightning from her fingers.

When Azula woke, blue flames danced above her head. She reached up to touch one, and it burned her finger before the flames faded.
She'd never thought that she was missing something before, but when the flames vanished a chill went through her. It centered in her chest and did not go away.
She got out of bed, throwing her night shirt off and going through the forms from her dream. The chi didn't flow. The fire didn't come. That intense, raw power that coursed through her veins was absent.
The dream had been so real, and so cruel. She looked at the blister on her finger, and wondered.
