It was hard for Severus to get out of the house sometimes, considering he was almost always with Daisy or Romana when he wasn’t working. So he invited Remus to come to the house for a cup of tea. He figured they should probably catch up, considering they were both dreaming more and more. He wanted to hear Remus’ side of these things, hear the werewolf’s interpretation.
He was in the kitchen putting the kettle on, with Daisy in the living room making block towers.
Since school had let out, Remus had been spending much of his time catching up on his reading when he wasn’t with Sirius or Tonks or out buying even more books, so when Severus invited him over for tea, he accepted. It had been some time since he’d seen the other man and he was looking forward to catching up. He knew that Severus was ahead of him in the dreams, as were Tonks and Hermione while he and Sirius were both still around the war against Voldemort.
Reaching Severus’ house, he rang the doorbell and waited for him to answer.
It didn’t take Severus long to come to the door and pull it open. He was wearing white--a button-down shirt tucked into black slacks. His sleeves were rolled up, as he’d been working in the kitchen. He didn’t quite smile when he saw Remus on his stoop, but he wasn’t frowning or scowling, either.
“Hello. Come in.” Severus stepped aside for Remus to enter his house. “Can I get you a cup of tea?”
“Hello, Severus,” Remus said as he stepped into the house and nodded, “Thank you, tea would be quite nice.” He hadn’t been over Severus’ house in a few months, but it was just as he’d remembered it, “It’s good to see you, Severus.” A lot had changed since the last time he’d been there, both in his dream life and personal life. He still felt guilty over the fact that he’d almost killed Severus in his dreams, even if it was Sirius’ fault. He also felt bad for the way Sirius and James had treated him. Remus might not have ever taken part in the bullying, but he never tried to stop it either. “How have you been?”
Not a whole lot of things had changed in a few months. Only now they had a daycare provider for Daisy, so things may have been a little cleaner where she kept her toys. Maybe. Severus turned to head into the kitchen to steep the tea.
Daisy looked up from her spot in the living room on the floor. She cocked her head to the side and climbed up to her feet, then wandered a bit closer to inspect the visitor. She’d met Remus before, but she was growing up a bit. Almost three years old now, she was talking more and getting ready for preschool.
“I’ve been well. Getting ready for the new school year,” Severus mentioned, nodding once. Daisy would be in preschool for two years before Kindergarten. It seemed like a lot, but Severus thought that school was better than day care.
“When does she start? I’m simply enjoying my time off before the new year starts.” Remus glanced over to where Daisy was approaching them and he smiled at her before turning his attention back to Severus, “What school did you end up going with?” Remus wasn’t exactly familiar with the pre-schools in the area, having moved to The OC just after kindergarten when he was younger.
“September.” Severus said, nodding. This was a subject he could sink his teeth into. He loved to talk about his daughter, and his family plans. It was a very happy part of his life. “She’s going to a Montessori Preschool. If we like it there, she can continue on to Kindergarten, but we don’t have to decide that now. She’s only three.” They wouldn’t take her in Kindergarten until she turned five, anyway.
Schooling had changed so much since they had been in school. Remus’ parents had simply enrolled him in Preschool at age four at the public school in their area and now parents researched schools before their children were even born and sent them to school as early as three years old. “I’ve heard that is a rather good school.”
“I’m sure she’s going to excell. She’s a bright young girl. Then again, I will admit that I’m a little biased.” Severus said, chuckling, as he put the kettle on.
Daisy was standing in the doorway, now, staring up at Remus. She had her father’s dark hair, but her mother’s facial features. (Lucky girl.)
Remus smiled as Severus praised his daughter, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a little biased when it comes to those that you love and care about.” After all, he had always been somewhat biased when it came to Sirius. As Severus put the kettle on, Remus happened to spot Daisy out of the corner of his eye and turned to smile at the little girl, “Hello, Daisy.”
Daisy was smiling, but a bit shyly. “Hello.” She said in response. Then she ran over to hug her father’s legs.
Severus gave a little sigh, setting the kettle down on the stove. “Go on, Daisy Girl, you don’t need to be shy. Remus is a good friend.”
Remus laughed softly as Daisy hugged Severus’ legs and leaned back against the counter, “Did you always want children?” Remus had always been unsure if he’d wanted children despite the fact that he never really saw them in his future.
“I...” Severus turned down to Daisy against his legs. “Daisy, why don’t you go get your baby doll from your room.” He suggested, helping to disentangle the girl from his coatskirts.
“Okay!” Daisy responded, then ran off down the hall to find her babydoll.
“...I was terrified I was going to turn into my own father.” Severus admitted. “But so far so good. Romana and I are talking about having another.”
Remus watched as Daisy ran down the hall then turned his attention back to Severus, “I think everyone has those fears at one time or another.” Of course Remus didn’t exactly know about Severus’ past, so he didn’t know to what extent Severus’ fears had reached. “That’s wonderful, Severus. I’m sure Daisy would be happy to have a sibling.”
“I just hope we’re doing the right thing.” Severus admitted again. He found that he was spilling his proverbial guts at the moment. “...it’s a rather difficult time and place to be raising children, isn’t it? With blue flus, giant mushrooms... alien zombies?”
Remus nodded, understanding what Severus was talking about this time, “Is it ever the right time to raise children? I may not be a parent, but it seems that there will always be something happening to make you question if it’s the right time and if no one had children for fear of what was going on around them, the human race would eventually die out.” And that was not a good option.
Severus gave a little nod. “You’re right. I know you’re right. Can’t help wondering, though.”
Daisy came back out of her bedroom carrying a baby doll. She was holding it with one arm hooked around the thing’s neck, cradled close against her chest. And she was smiling. She held the doll up to Remus.
Severus laughed. “I think she wants you to play with her.”
Remus smiled as Daisy held the doll out to him and he took it, “And what’s her name?” If he was completely honest, he had no idea how to interact with a little girl. Sure, the last time he’d been there, he’d taken part in her tea party, but aside from that, this was one thing Remus Lupin didn’t know how to do. It had been much easier with Harry when he was little.
“Baby,” Daisy said. She wasn’t all that creative with names, apparently. But it didn’t really matter. It was practically inaudible and impossible to understand, anyway.
“Baby,” Severus repeated, acting as translator.
“Bottle! For baby!” Daisy said, perking up considerably, then turned around and bolted back to her room. Presumably to get the baby’s bottle.
Remus smiled then glanced over at Severus when Daisy ran off, “Last time it was a tea party and this time it’s baby dolls. I can only imagine what we’ll do to occupy our time the next time I come over.” Not that Remus minded of course. He might have felt a tad bit awkward, but he didn’t mind at all.
“Ponies.” Severus suggested, pouring hot water into mugs for tea. “She’s into that Pony cartoon show.” He put a couple of tea bags into the mugs to let them steep--tea he’d grown in his own garden. The plants were coming along well after the snow over Christmas.
“I’ll admit, I don’t know the first thing about playing with ponies.” Remus wondered what Sirius would say if he saw him then, standing in Severus’ kitchen, holding a baby doll. Chances were pretty good that he would wind up teasing him, but then again, what didn’t Sirius tease him about?
Severus laughed. He actually laughed. He shook his head a little, holding out one of the mugs to Remus. “You’d pick it up quickly.” He shrugged one shoulder. “It’s a lot of tea parties and trying to decide whose birthday it is.”
Remus smiled and took the cup from Severus, still holding the baby doll with his other arm; after all, Daisy had entrusted her with him, so until she came back, he wasn’t going to simply put her on the counter or something. Yup, Sirius would definitely tease him about this if he could see him right now.
If only Severus was devious enough to snap a picture with his camera phone. He didn’t, but he could.
