We will fight, we will sacrifice, and we will find a way.
Who: Shepard (narrative)
What: Something is coming. And Snipe has been lazy with his previously redeemed memories!
When: Last night
Where: Batarian Space
Status: Complete
Rating: PG-13 for mass murder for the greater good
It always came down to some kind of artifact, didn't it. Prothean, or Reaper, or something else. Shepard was sick of those things, but she was here as a favor to Admiral Hackett and she was going to get his friend back. And she did, right out of a prison.
Things only got worse from there. The Mass Relay in the system was an Alpha Relay. From there, the Reapers can invade anywhere in the galaxy. The scientist she'd rescued had developed a plan to take out the Relay. It could destroy the system, involving ramming their research station asteroid into the relay.
Naturally, as these things went, it was a trap. The research team had been indoctrinated by the artifact. She wasn't sure how many came for her. They even sent a fucking MECH after her before she blacked out. She thought it might be a new record.
She was out for two days. She remembered someone with an alarmed voice saying the sedatives weren't working any longer. Shepard felt grimly amused by that fact.
She had less than two hours to destroy the relay before the Reapers arrived. She fought her way to the main control room.
Total destruction of the Batarian colony she was warned. Three hundred thousand lives. The clock clicked further towards zero as she struggled with the numbers. Three-hundred thousand, or three hundred trillion?
Feeling sick, Shepard activated the engines, and tried to send a warning to the colony. She didn't know if the message got out because she was interrupted.
Not out of the woods yet, Shepard fought through the asteroid to get to the reactor core and stop the scientist from blowing them up. She was forced to shoot the woman, who was holding a detonator, but the blast knocked her out.
When she came to, there was only minutes left before impact. Once she got to a comm relay, her communication with the Normandy was again interrupted.
Harbinger.
Shepard, you have become an annoyance. You fight against inevitability, dust struggling against cosmic winds.
This seems a victory to you. A star system sacrificed, but even now your greatest civilizations are doomed to fall, your leaders will beg to serve us.
"Maybe you're right," Shepard responded. "Maybe we can't win this but we'll fight you regardless. Just like we did sovereign, just like I'm doing now. We will fight, we will sacrifice, and we will find a way. That's what humans do."
Know this as you die in vain; your time will come, your species will fall. Prepare yourselves for the arrival.
The Normandy retrieved her, making it through the relay mere seconds before impact. She hoped it was worth it.
