Felicity looked up at the building, then back to the card to double check the address. Deciding it was the right address, she straighten her glasses and walked up to the front door, wondering what John Connor had in store behind the door. Please don’t be porn, please don’t be porn, please don’t be porn...
John couldn't help but smirk as he opened the door, he thought she might be punctual so he'd come down from the office to meet her.
"You're safe its not porn" he told her in greeting, "Not yet anyway, if this fails though who knows" he teased her slightly, knowing she was probably unaware she had been speaking aloud.
“Oh god, sorry” Felicity apologised, covering her face with a hand. “I didn’t mean anything by it, I just...y’know, guy approaches girl on the internet about a job, girl arrives at random office block, jeez, it already sounds like porn plot...” she joked.
John laughed and waved it off, “I get it, don’t worry. It does sound like a porn plot but I think my girlfriend might have major issues if that was my day job.”
“Right, girlfriend,” Felicity quirked a nervous smiled and tried to put her embarrassing first encounter behind her. “So, if not porn, what mysteries do you hold in this building?”
"Its an S and M dungeon" he told her seriously before grinning, "Sorry" he stood back from the doorway to let her in. "Nothing sinister just clean environment for computers that's all. My mom rented this place"
Felicity couldn’t tell if he was joking until he grinned at her. She sighed in relief and took a few steps into the room. “You’re mom must be pretty cool then,” she observed as he looked around the room appreciatively.
“She’s the best” John confirmed, “So any luck on the job front?” he asked as he led her further into the apartment.
“Well, I’ve been approached by Oliver Queen for an online venture for his charity, but I’m not sure if it’s...how do I say this...full-time enough for my needs yet. But I’m keeping an open mind, you never know what might come from these sorts of things,” she smiled, following John through the apartment.
“Well a few part time things could be pretty interesting you know” John replied, leading her to one of the smaller rooms where a few computers were set up.
“Yeah, way I figure it I’m still working out what’s going to fit best,” Felicity shrugged. “Ah! Now this is pretty cool!” she gaped at the room with computers all around.
“Exactly, that’s the philosophy I’m going with” he said, “Most of these I’ve rebuilt to give me everything I needed. But just to see how good you are I want you to see how much information you can find in ten minutes. On me” he grinned.
“Ok, any machine, right?” Felicity asked unfazed, approaching one of the computers and running her hand along the back of one of the chairs.
“Any one you like” John confirmed, “They’re all the same. Speed, access, everything” He lifted his hand to his watch as she sat, “Ten minutes and counting” he told her.
“Cool,” Felicity smiled and slipped in behind a desk. She straightened her glasses and got to work, easily finding her way into the ISP’s information and following the trail of data which showed signs of trying to be covered up. “So uh...you do this to all your employees? See how much they can dig up on you in ten minutes?” she asked with a grin, her fingers never stopping on the keyboard.
John laughed, “I’ve never had employees before” he told her easily, “I’ve only just finished school but it seems the best way to me. At least I’ll know your skill level”
“Really? You finished school?” Felicity asked. “Not with this attendance level,” she commented with a little grin as the screen in front of her deconstructed the camouflage he had used to cover his steps of altering his school’s online attendance.
He let out a bark of laughter, “I’m impressed. I mean I didn’t cover my tracks very well I admit but even on my lazy days I’m better than even the above average hacker” he told her, no arrogance but simple truth in his tone. “Six minutes remaining”
“And modest to boot,” Felicity teased, throwing him a sideways smile while she continued to work. “By the way, you’re ok with my transferring what’s in your bank account to the Humane Society, right?” she asked, the screen showing his bank balance.
“Just simple fact” he smirked, before raising an eyebrow, “The Humane Society, really? At least get inventive” he teased her, she’d found account #1.
“I’ve got a soft spot for animals,” Felicity teased with a satisfied grin. “What about your other two, any opinion on where you want the money from them to go?”
“Oh let me guess the cute fluffy kittens?” John grinned back before nodding. “Nice. Two minutes remaining”
"I'm partial to the occasional kitten, rabbits too," she smiled. "Two minutes, let's see....social security number....passport....driver's licence...credit rating...gym membership...school reports...emails to a girl called 'Glimmer', that's a cute name...oh I'm sorry," she stopped working to look up at him. "I um...I'm really sorry about your mom," she told him sincerely.
“Right. Time’s up” John said when she mentioned his mother, nodding at her, “You did well. Better than well actually, in fact I’d dare say you’d stand a good chance of finding almost everything if I let you continue. Might have to go update a few things” he added with a small smile.
“Oh, I...thank you?” Felicity asked, worried that he hadn’t really replied about his mom but flattered that he thought he’d have to upgrade his security because of her work.
He knew she’d probably find out about his mother but being faced with her saying it he hadn’t been properly prepared for it. “You’re welcome. You are very talented” he told her, “How long have you being hacking?”
Felicity gave an awkward little laugh at that. “Ummm...well,” she ran a hand over her hair and down her ponytail. “I guess as long as I can remember really. I’ve uh...always had an aptitude for computers since I was a little girl,” she shrugged, sitting back a bit in her seat.
“Now that sounds familiar” he told her with a smile, “Well I can’t offer you stable work, not yet anyway, but if you want I can make sure you have work whenever I have it”
“That would be great! Thank you!” Felicity smiled and sat up straight. “I mean I can program and stuff, but this sort of thing is what I love doing, gives my brain a bit of a workout, y’know?”
John nodded, “There will be a bit of programming to begin with, in the early jobs but once we get known I can work on getting the word out about what else we can do, you know?” you had to be careful about these things after all.
“Yep, that’s fine, gotta...build a reputation and all that,” Felicity joked in her awkward way. “So uhh...anything else I can do while I’m here?”
“Exactly” John replied, “That’s about it, unless you want to take a look at what I’m currently working on. I need some software developing which I might not have time to do before I go away with my girlfriend, I mean if you’re interested...”
“Absolutely!” Felicity jumped on the opportunity. “I mean...” she licked her lips and closed her eyes while she reminded herself to be calm about it. “That would be great,” she smiled.
John grinned, he liked this girl he thought as he grabbed a chair and pulled the keyboard towards himself, “Okay, then let’s show you project number one”
