Jane had actually cleaned up this time. Properly. No breakfast bowls left on the side anywhere, or glasses on the sideboard, everything was put away. She cast a quick look over her computer, No new emails, excellent. Now all she had to do was wait for John Connor to arrive.
John made his way to Jane’s apartment, her message hadn’t really said much except she needed to meet with him so he wasn’t sure if she’d gotten the funding or not. He hoped so as he’d started to work on the spec for it and would love to have a go at the challenge.
Knocking on her door he waited for her to answer.
Jane hurried to the door, placing the coffee cup she grabbed a quick sip from on the kitchen island. She wiped the corners of her mouth with her fingertips, just in case there was any coffee hiding there. Satisfied she was presentable, she opened the door with a smiled, “Hi John, come on in.” She waved him in and shut the door behind him. “How have you been? Can I get you a drink or something?”
“Hi Jane, thanks” he said as he entered, “Soda or coke would be great actually if you have it. No worries if not” he told her. “I’ve been good. Got some specs done on what you need which I can let you have a look at” He figured even without funding she could maybe make use of them.
“Sure,” Jane told him, heading off to the fridge to grab him a soda. She grabbed her coffee on the way back and handed the can over to him as she sat on the arm of a sofa. “That’s great, thanks,” she took a sip of her coffee. “Other great news, we were granted the funding!” she grinned.
John properly smiled at that news, “You have no idea how happy that makes me” he told her, “As soon as I started working on the spec I wanted to get my teeth into the project”
“Great!” Jane grinned. “I’m glad to see you’re still enthusiastic about it,” she took another sip of her coffee.
“Oh I am, it’s a pretty interesting thing to be a part of you know” John replied, “Plus it gives me something to do as well as looking great for any future work”
Jane laughed at that, “Well, there’s that too.” She tipped her cup in his direction in acknowledgement. “So when do you think you can get started?”
John was nothing if not enterprising, “As soon as you want me really” he told her with a nod, “How soon do you need it completed?”
“Well I’d like to try and gather plenty of data over the summer so I’ve got plenty to get my teeth into when I go back to college,” Jane told him. “So whenever you’re free to set it all up, I’ll go grab the parts on the specs and you can get started,” she explained.
“Great” John nodded, “Sounds like a good plan to me. I’m taking my girlfriend away but can get the bulk of the work done before then. I’m also looking to bring somebody else on board to help, if that’s okay?”
“Ooo, going somewhere nice?” Jane asked from her perch. “I’m not sure I’ll be able to get anymore funding, but otherwise I can’t see a problem with it. Anyone I might know?”
“Just along the coast. We tend to take my bike and just drive until we find someplace we want to stop” he smiled, it was a kind of nomad holidaying he supposed but worked well for him and Glimmer. “Not a problem, I can split what I’m being given. Her name’s Felicity, she’s actually pretty damn good. Impressed me anyway. She’s good with software”
“Cool, sounds kind of...nomadic,” Jane commented with a smile. “That’s cool, I’m always up for nurturing good talent, wouldn’t have got where I am now if it weren’t for someone taking a shot with me,” Jane nodded.
“Yeah pretty much exactly that” John nodded, “We prefer not to have too many plans. Well you took a shot with me too and I’m grateful for that”
“You are more than welcome,” Jane smiled, raising her glass in salute. “You upto any other projects at the moment then?”
“A couple of other things actually. Word seems to have gotten around” he replied, “I had contact from a few companies thanks to a recommendation from a Miss Gordon, she seems to have heard about me”
“Cool, sounds like things are really starting to get off the ground for you,” Jane nodded. “Are you wanting to start your own company then?”
“Yeah. I’m in the process of setting up Connor Computing Ltd” he told her, “I figure it’s worth a shot right?”
“Definitely,” Jane encouraged. “Good luck to you, I’ll be sure to give you a good reference,” she smiled at him.
“Thanks. That would be great actually” John replied, “So I’ll make a start and then as soon as the materials I need but don’t currently have arrive I can really get going on it all”
"Yep," Jane nodded. "Well I'm not going anywhere as of yet this summer so whenever you want to come and do some work just let me know. I've got someone moving in in the next couple of days so I'll let her know you'll be around so she won't taze you or something," she joked before sipping her coffee.
“Will do” John nodded, “I really don’t feel like getting tazered so I’ll definitely let you and your new roommate know before I come round”
Jane laughed at that, this was going to be a good partnership, she could tell.
