Alice was a little nervous. She’d sent over examples of the websites that she’d built, the fashion blogging she’d done, and her experience. It wasn’t much. She had just graduated from high school, after all, but the amount of work that she’d done--charity work, school projects, etc.--were enough to give her some credit? Hopefully? And she’d heard that Elphaba and Glinda both liked her work and wanted to meet with her... so that was a good sign, right?
She knocked on the office door and waited.
Elphaba heard the knock on her door and looked up from the file she was immersed in. She checked her watch and cursed under her breath, where had the time gone? She quickly folded the file up and put it to one side before getting up and heading to the door, taking her glasses of as she reached the door. She took a breath and opened it up, smiling at the woman on the other side and reaching a hand out for her to shake. “Ms Cullen, hi, please come in ,” she invited, stepping aside and indicating the seat in front of her desk.
“Hi,” Alice said, breaking into a bright smile as she stepped into the office. “Thank you for meeting with me. I’m really looking forward to working together, if that’s what you guys decide to do.” Could Elphaba tell how nervous she was?
“Well, I think it’s fairly certain we’d like to work with you,” Elphaba closed the door and came around to sit on her side of the desk. “Ms Upland and I really liked the portfolio you sent over. It’s just the sort of thing we’re looking for,” she told the girl.
“Really?” Alice’s hopes went straight through the roof. “That’s wonderful! I was hoping. I have a lot of really interesting ideas for how to present this new project, too. I’d love to hear what you want from me, and I can go home and get started working on that website.”
"That sounds amazing," Elphaba grinned. "Would you like a drink?" she asked, indicating the drink making station to her left.
“Oh, sure.” Alice said, giving a nod. “Thank you.” She turned to dig into her bag and pulled out her notebook and some pens.
"What can I get you? Tea? Coffee? Juice?" Elphaba asked, already preparing her own coffee.
“Oh, I’ll have whatever you’re having.” Alice said, giving her a smile. She turned to her pages of notes and then gave Elphaba her full attention.
"Coffee with milk and one sugar it is then," Elphaba smiled as she set about making the drink. "So, do you know much about this project Ms Upland and I are trying to accomplish?"
Alice couldn’t say no to that. It sounded perfect. She leaned back a little in the chair, smiling at the older woman. “Only a few of the details. Nothing much. I know that I’d be thrilled to get to work with you both.” She added. “Fashion is my passion, and though I’m not the best designer in the world, I’m a quick learner, and pretty fluent in html.”
“You sound like you’re the perfect candidate,” Elphaba smiled at her over her shoulder as she stirred their coffees. “Tell me a little more about yourself then,” she invited, moving back behind her desk with their coffees, placing one in front of Alice and holding the other. She leaned back in her seat and took a long sniff of the drink. She liked Alice, she gave a very relaxed atmosphere and Elphaba felt relaxed just chatting with the girl.
“Well, I’ve just graduated from high school.” Alice said, then reached forward to accept the coffee with a gentle “thanks.” She brought it into her lap and held the mug with both hands. “So I’m a bit of a blank slate. I’ve always been into fashion. My brother and sister-in-law complain about how I’m always trying to get their daughter into cute clothes.”
Elphaba laughed at that, "I see, and how old is said daughter?"
“She was born in... August?” Alice said, trying to count the months in her head. “Anyway, she’s little. I love dressing her up.” She beamed.
"Aww, I bet she's a cutie," Elphaba grinned. "Great, so you understand the industry somewhat...and now you've mentioned it we could probably use your blogging skills during the actual gala week," Elphaba explained. "Y'know, try and drum up some more hype and interest to get people through the doors."
“She’s wonderful. The light of our lives, really.” Alice said, grinning softly. She nodded, enthusiastically. “Definitely. I can start today. Right now. Getting the website up and running and starting to advertise.”
"Sounds like she's wonderful," Elphaba smiled. "Great! We could do with getting the site online as soon as we can to promote it," Elphaba sat forward to lean on her desk. "I can imagine Ms Upland will like a fair amount of pink on the site, probably with bubbles or something," she told her with a grin. "Once we have a few more designers on board you could do a profile page for each of them, maybe do brief interviews and then blog the day of their show," Elphaba told her. "Sound ok?"
“That sounds wonderful!” Alice nodded. She drew out her notebook to show Elphaba some of the designs she’d been working on. “Pink and bubbles. Perfect. I can do profiles with links to their own sites.” She nodded, then turned the notebook around so the other woman could see. And she went through a few of her ideas. “I’ll just need some pictures. I can get a domain name and some server space... it should be pretty easy to set up on my end.”
“When you do that, pass on the details to me and we’ll sort out paying for everything,” Elphaba told the girl. “I know how expensive that sort of thing can be,” she offered kindly. “If you could get a template of the site done for us in the next few days, then you could present it to Ms Upland for her approval and then go live with it. We’re currently working on securing designers for the show and once I have a few names I can pass them and their contact details on to you, ok?”
“That sounds perfect.” Alice was absolutely thrilled. She couldn’t wait to start designing. “I’ll get home and get to work, then!” She said, jumping up to her feet. She didn’t want to use up any more of Elphaba’s time.
Elphaba laughed at the girl's enthusiasm. "Sure, as long as you're happy with everything," she stood to say goodbye to the girl, pulling out her business card from a holder on the desk to give to her. "If you have any concerns or anything, just give me a call," she smiled kindly at the young woman.
Alice accepted the card. “Of course. Thank you so much.” She was thrilled. She wasn’t yet sure if this was a job job, or just an internship thing, she didn’t know if she was going to get paid, or how much. But so far it didn’t matter. She was doing what she loved.
Alice turned and headed out of the office with a huge grin on her face.
